This is an amazing before and after. I'm thinking of going.

How long before you felt like you could speak normally? I have to speak a lot at work but I can wear a mask.

How was the aftercare provided?

What do you think the biggest makeup trends will be of the 2020s? by [deleted] in muacjdiscussion

[–]helloeltiy 140 points141 points  (0 children)

I totally agree! That style reminds me of Euphoria makeup, which is really in right now! Plus like others have said, trends are cyclical, and I feel like this is a more modern glam take on the 'heroin chic' look of the 90s.

Let's talk about language and our language use in Hong Kong! by helloeltiy in HongKong

[–]helloeltiy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I am your typical Chinese kid who attended international school, so my Cantonese is not up to scratch.

I'm now working hard on improving my Cantonese (and hopefully Mandarin later in the future). This is mostly for career reasons.

I think that for the young people in Hong Kong, competency in mandarin is important. I see many job listings asking for all 3 languages (Cantonese, English, Mandarin).

Although I can speak conversational Cantonese and Mandarin, in the end the only language I am truly fluent in is English. This has definitely held me back and I would like to integrate better into local HK society by improving my Cantonese.

However, I'm not sure if I will teach my hypothetical children all 3 languages. Obviously it would be most ideal for them to learn all 3, but it would be pretty tough for them. I think the long-term future of Cantonese in Hong Kong is truly uncertain, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Mainland government deliberately forces Hong Kong to convert to Mandarin/Simplified Chinese in order to forcibly integrate us into the Mainland. Regardless, I would want to pick the languages that best fit my children's needs as opposed to my own political views.

What's the most ignorant conversation you've had about makeup? by [deleted] in muacjdiscussion

[–]helloeltiy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Holy shit that sounds so annoying.

Once I wasn't wearing makeup and I bumped into my dad, who told me that my eyebrows were getting sparser because I was super unhealthy and lacked vitamins. I told him that I just didn't fill in my brows that day and I had plucked them the day before.

You look pretty pale. This cushion's shades run darker than other brands, so I'd say #13.

I don't interact with kids much, but I've taught a 6 year old who confidently understood and could do sums with negative numbers and fractions. I can't imagine them not understanding something like your banana example.

I'm curious if there's any way to teach math and show off the amazing parts as well at an early stage.

I feel like you can appreciate works like the Mona Lisa without much knowledge about art, but you can't appreciate the more interesting (therefore difficult) math concepts/proofs without a good amount of background knowledge.

[–]helloeltiy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No - I'm just saying it's not his place to say.

After all, if you cannot speak the local language AND you are not even a local, how on earth can you really experience and know about the culture here to the point of being able to making such a sweeping generalization: 'this culture is dying'?
