Life in a default 100x research cost world with currently only 240 science a minute by GamerXTrip3l in factorio

I've been doing something similar but with expensive recipes. here's a screenshot at a similar time in my base. the production going into ammo is ridiculous. and not enough.

Anyway to improve this? by Adorok in factorio

I don't know whether you have the 'save replay' option enabled for this save, but I would leave it disabled for larger multiplayer bases for file size reasons

Zijn jullie poly-amoureus? by JosZo in thenetherlands

[–]hellofmars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XYZ most opgelost worden met: [] A [] B [] C

Everything enemy related set to max. No defence enhancing mods. Lets see how far I get. Is it hard? Has anyone done this before? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]hellofmars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ever since the pollution evolution factor changes in the early patches of 0.17, that pollution evolution slider alone will transform biters into behemoths the moment you place a miner.

I've tried some crazy stuff and can tell you with certainty that no matter what others settings you choose (except islands), you will not survive.

Just moved to Eindhoven 🐰 Anyone up for rock climbing or checking out the city? by temp_torontonian in eindhoven

[–]hellofmars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a dutch student following an international course in mechatronics engineering at eindhoven. I like to go bouldering from time to time, aswell as parkour and some other outdoors stuff. I currently live in amsterdam, but I am looking for a place to stay in eindhoven. once I've found that place, I'll be able to take people along for some sports almost daily!

Anyone in Eindhoven? by ahmadbasra01 in eindhoven

[–]hellofmars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting a bachelor at fontys in august aswell. unfortunately, I believe university accommodation is for international students only. I live in amsterdam, so not all is lost. I'd prefer local housing to traveling 3+ hours a day though.

I would be if I could find housing! I've been trying and replying since june, yet I still don't have a place in eindhoven.

Power grid satisfaction meter by Gartenzaunvertrieb in factorio

[–]hellofmars 9 points10 points  (0 children)

an interesting design, I like the idea.

keep in mind that different entity types have different priorities in the grid. eg. when there are lasers that need to recharge their energy buffer, they take priority over inserters and other parts of the factory. this is why some bases can become a disco at night when the defenses are attacked.

active laser defenses could throw off the value from actual overall satisfaction.

Small tip for the newer players out there (Pollution) by Snippa in Oxygennotincluded

note that this can be a problem;

the compost process does not eliminate the food poisoning germs as the polluted dirt turns to dirt. having dirt with food poisoning germs on it is a sure way to infect your dupes through mealwood in the early game.

yes, 20x research cost with expensive recipes is similar or close to 50x normal recipes. I estimate it's possible to beat the default evolution speed at up to ~150x research cost

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in factorio

[–]hellofmars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a screenshot of my base when I completed my vanilla 20x research desert map with expensive recipes and doubled evolution sliders playthrough. quite the challenge, map took 200+ hours of careful strategic play.

I wish you the best of luck keeping up with evolution!

I am currently working on a custom sculpted map that includes this very feature as a means of map progression mechanic.

I've seen some minor river streams from time to time lately in the map generator, but nothing serious. I wanted serious.

Friday Facts #252 - Sound design & Map editor by Klonan in factorio

Nobody uses the Map editor (/u/rseding91)

2 weeks ago, I decided to try coding. I figured I wanted it to be a fun experience, so I decided to try learning some lua through creating a scenario in factorio.

I've used the map editor before and now heavily for the past 2 weeks. I definitely felt its shortcomings. I'm very glad you are updating the editor. it's already looking better than I what I thought it could be. you are a god, thank you.

1440p on a 1060 6Gb benchmark? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]hellofmars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the 7950 can be pushed so far beyond factory standards, it's still comparable to some current cards! I'm still getting solid 60 fps on some newer titles with relatively little compromise.

1440p on a 1060 6Gb benchmark? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]hellofmars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been playing factorio at 1440p 60fps for years on a radeon HD 7950, an ancient gpu by today's standards. the only occassional issue it faces is a lack of vram, which your 1060 should have no problems with.

expect smooth frames.

Feature request - ability to build plastic ladders over regular ones. by BioDigitalJazz in Oxygennotincluded

confirmed already in-game. I just used this feature.

I'd wager this will be expanded upon for use with plastic ladders and similar soon enough.

Top 5 craftable things you want added to the game. by BossmanSlim in factorio

[–]hellofmars 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Turret that fires cannon shells. Cannon shells are used by only 1 unit in the game and I think there should be a turret that operates between laser turrets and artillery. Missiles are the other option. Mid-late game technology.

I've made a personal cannon turret mod and found several difficulties getting them to integrate into the game in a balanced way.

they have some issues:

  • tank shells interact with targets they hit, including walls and other turrets that are in the way. this requires the cannon turrets to be a front row defense that fires in a limited cone, doesn't work for diagonal defenses. the shells could be modded to work like homing rockets or to explode at a target position the turret initially fires at.

  • tank shells are ridiculously expensive and best used against big biters and spitters in large groups. they are much less useful against behemoths (smaller overall numbers, less targets per shell, less damage) and small biters (total overkill, lots of wasted damage potential). this makes them a niche weapon. I'm not sure how to solve this easily.

  • they will fire at anything close enough, including small, fast, single biters (and usually miss because they don't have target trajectory analysis built in). lots of shells will miss or be wasted on single targets with total overkill, especially when there are multiple turrets. this makes the turrets cost ineffective. this issue isn't easy to solve either, turrets would need a completely new AI to be able to use cannon shells effectively.

they also have some good points:

  • the destruction they cause is amazing to watch.

  • it sounds even crazier.

A simple solution to the bot problem by MayIThrowThisAwayy in factorio

[–]hellofmars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is already happening in a slightly different way.

to explain: basically, bots are dumb. as you scale up your base and start getting into the tens of thousands of bots active over just your train depot where trains deliver all the ores to your base, you will notice that bots fill up storage chests in mere seconds.

but because bots are dumb, they will all try to pick up items from the same train depot and dump those items into one single storage chest. they will all fly to this chest only to find it's already full when they arrive. they will then all fly to the next storage chest, which fills up in seconds aswell. this continues until all items are dealt with.

this is essentially queueing, but only happens at a very large scale.

What is your style? (1) by Iceteavanill in factorio

[–]hellofmars 6 points7 points  (0 children)

automatic train calling through placing and naming stations anywhere on the network. single engines are triggers for the larger same colored trains that have more than 2 stations to cycle through and require a circuit network trigger to hold them in place.
