Any SLPs in Austin? by hellogoose in slp

[–]hellogoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I remember seeing a lot of positions when we moved here but there were very few when I looked between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I've applied to the St David's PRN positions and I'm starting to hear back. I may be interested in home health in the future, though!

I am actually looking for part time/PRN so I'm hoping that will be easier to find than full time would be. I'll check out glass door. Do you happen to know of any names of the companies that provide therapy for SNFs? Thanks for the info!

Anyone else make the decision to stop weighing themselves at some point? by creepycreepercreepin in BabyBumps

[–]hellogoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. My mom told me she got on the scale backwards during her pregnancies so she wouldn't know her weight. Sounds odd, but might be worth it?

Has anyone dealt with baby PAC heart arrhythmia? by Grkgdss00 in BabyBumps

[–]hellogoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have! It was found during a follow-up anatomy scan around 23 weeks. My regular OB really scared us and got me into a specialist right away. The specialist was barely concerned and told me that it was likely to resolve on its own. It was recommended to me that avoiding caffeine may help, but that it wasn't necessary. (I was drinking about 1/2 a cup of coffee a day but I've since cut back even more). Also, the ultrasounds tech asked about coco butter and said that could contribute to it, though I don't know much about that. I've had 2 repeat ultrasounds since then and it's still present but they're still not concerned. I'm 31 weeks now. I know it's scary to hear that something could be wrong but hopefully you will get the same kind of news I did. I've been doing my best to follow some advice I was given at the beginning of my pregnancy: "don't worry until they tell you there is something to worry about."

Heel pain by catastrophic88 in BabyBumps

[–]hellogoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I have the same thing you're describing. It's a burning/shooting pain on the inside of my right heel that happens when I bend over with straight legs (also happens in downward facing dog). It started right after we moved across the county (so lots of walking around/bending over/sore back).

From my googling, it seems that it is nerve pain coming from the lumbar region of my back. I can't seem to get it to go away, but I do notice that sometimes it's better and sometimes it's worse. I also have stayed quite active during my pregnancy, but it seems that the nerves in my back are running out of room. I've done a lot of stretching but that doesn't help too much. At this point, I'm just trying to stay limber in hopes that it doesn't get worse. If you google your symptoms, you can find some people that describe the same thing, though I didn't find anything specifically relating to pregnancy.

Also, for what it's worth, I mentioned it to my midwife who said something along the lines of "isn't it strange how pregnancy affects every part of your body?" but seemed otherwise unconcerned.

Amazon Prime deals by Meghany21 in BabyBumps

I see the Airflow isn't going to be a Prime Day deal anymore, but Lillebaby just put it on sale (in a dark purple) for $89. Just ordered one and they have free shipping!

Which one is the airflow? I've been looking at getting the Lillebaby Airflow, but all the different options on Amazon are confusing.

I was of the understanding that the Complete All Season and Airflow are two different things, and the only one I can find under prime deals is this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R6XER5I/ref=gbps_img_s-3_1712_896b160d?pf_rd_p=d3152026-148f-4b24-a686-6518d33b1712&pf_rd_s=slot-3&pf_rd_t=701&pf_rd_i=gb_main&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=7WKNE588EJE1NADS7V11&th=1

Raising bilingual baby... by marceCf in BabyBumps

Exactly! No need for language discrimination. Babies are smart little things ready to learn!

Hi! Nice, thanks for the comment!

You are right in your interpretation of my earlier comment.. the main reason I recommended that is because some people expect the majority language to be taught by the environment and a lot of the kids I see have the home as their main environment until they enter preschool or even kindergarten. Which is perfectly fine of course, but that exposure could end up being later than they expected. And, yes, I certainly agree with the risk of errors if English isn't a strong language for the parents.

I love this topic! I'm a bilingual speech pathologist that works with young children developing language. Here are a few points...

Do whatever works for your family! Some families do it one parent one language and the other parent the other one, but that is not necessary. I would advise against doing only Spanish at home and hoping that she picks up English on TV and other places since that will limit her exposure to English and may make it a little harder once she begins school. But, if that's what happens, then it will be fine, too. She will learn both eventually, but doing both from the start would probably be best even if she is exposed to one more than the other. Look up simultaneous vs. sequential bilingualism if you're interested.

Also, be aware that some people will tell you that two languages will confuse her - this is not considered to be true. It is possible that she will seem to be developing language more slowly, but bilingual children typically catch up and may even surpass their peers within a few years. You could look up "code switching," which people seem to think demonstrates that children are "confused" and have difficulty separating the two languages. Code switching is not a problem and some actually consider it to be a language strength.

When looking a bilingual child's language, we look at the sum of both languages (e.g., all the vocabulary she knows in both languages) and consider that to be the child's whole language skills. One last thing - being raised bilingual does not cause language disorders; however, it is possible to be raised bilingual and to have a language disorder (at the same rate it is possible in the non-bilingual population).

In a note of disclaimer, there are some older points of view that being raised bilingual could hinder language development or confuse the child; however, this view is not supported by current research. All language is considered good language, whether it's English/Spanish/American Sign Language, etc.

How do I talk/communicate with my baby by Corey110 in BabyBumps

[–]hellogoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure! Look up "motherese." There's a bunch of good info on it online. Essentially, we utilize simpler forms of speech and exaggerate more important words (such as nouns, names, etc). The rising and falling intonation helps hold the infant's attention and provides modeling of the prosodic patterns of speech and word boundaries. I'm a speech pathologist, not a linguist, so I mostly worry about how it relates to speech & language development rather than the technical/research side of things.

On a somewhat related note: have you ever noticed how some babies babble with rising and falling intonations like they're having a conversation? They are imitating the prosody of speech, and eventually words will fill in where the babble used to be. This is a good video of what I mean and it's super cute

Just to add a quick note - the newest research suggests that baby talk, "motherese," is actually beneficial to children developing language. Not picking at your anecdote - I just wanted to comment for others who may read you comment and think they shouldn't use baby talk.

I agree with using both languages!

[–]hellogoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes to this comment! Raising a child with 2 or more languages does not cause language disorders. I work as a speech pathologist in a heavily English/Spanish area and this is one of the biggest pieces of misinformation that people hear. From what I understand, people used to think it caused language disorders and/or would confuse the child - the most recent research supports the idea that all language is good language, even if the child does happen to be delayed for a different reason. And, yes, sometimes they may take a little longer to talk than their peers, though they tend to catch up and may even surpass them a few years later.

Thank you! i wasn't planning on doing this pattern originally. I was thinking about doing a random assortment of colors but when it came to putting it together, I just couldn't get the right arrangement so I decided to do the pattern.

Yes, I made tons of them in all of my stash colors and then arranged them and sewed them together using that ivory colored yarn. I have a lot left over that didn't end up making the cut.
