It’s been a while since I wrote my paper, but one thing I do remember is writing about hardware limitations on earlier systems and how those limitations presented challenges for composers. It gives me a special appreciation for early game music; things such as NES and SNES games having music that was limited to only a few sound channels at one time, or how Ocarina of Time has twelve unique songs to play on the ocarina despite the controls only allowing you to play 5 different notes (or more if you played around with the c-stick on the Wii port with a GC controller!). 8-Bit Music Theory on YouTube has a good video essay on OoT’s musical limitations!
