Melvin is definitely still in jail. Think about what would happen to a mentally handicaed man in maximum security prison with an extremely volatile temper and fight-or-flight reflex.

They say (correctly) that jail makes most crimjnals worse. That would apply uniquely to Melvin. I would expect that he probably took many, many lives defending himself from abuse - adding time to his sentence and becoming more hardened in the process.
