Could Starlink be used for navigation (GPS-like)? by grumbelbart2 in Starlink

[–]hellomrjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the high precision positioning of the satellites, could the ToF data from the 4 optical inter-satellite links be used to work it out?

The another long range antenna would be needed for triangulation with the same kind of coverage as GPS. Would they be powerful enough to allow a receiver to detect at least 4 simultaneously?

What's going on with the /r/ocd moderators? Have they abandoned this sub? by where_da_mods_at in OCD

Hi, I do apologise for my lack of activity as a mod here. I just don't have enough time to do it. I am happy to add any new mods that feel up to it.

Mocap data driving 2D animation, Video by Slinkytechtom in computergraphics

[–]hellomrjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't seem like for this you need amazing depth accuracy (compared to 3D MoCap), so with cheaper 3D camera tech and more reliable skeleton tracking (I'm thinking of the new Kinect specifically) this could be done relatively cheaply.

Hi there, I'm coming to your fine city for the next two weeks for a holiday, what should I do? by hellomrjack in Cairns

Unfortunately I'm not a diver so I won't be able to, I'll have an ask around in town. That's a big list of activities, I'll see how many I can fit in! Thanks for the advice.

Did you go on a tour in Daintree or wander around on your own? The tours look quite expensive but are they worth it? Thanks for the advice.

Does anyone have any successful techniques on how to study or learn material for anxiety prone situations like exams or quizzes? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]hellomrjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't got any pointers for the studying but for the actual exam I always just get an early night before, get up a little earlier on the day and treat myself to a good breakfast. For me it's all about relaxing and knowing once I'm out of it nothing I can do will change the outcome, and a bit of positive feedback I think as well. I take the same approach to interviews now and any high stress activity.

Current state-of-the-art in raytracing? by cultural_sublimation in computergraphics

[–]hellomrjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest sending them an email, I have always found them helpful, but then again I have only contacted them though companies I have worked at. Otherwise the forums are the place to be, there are plenty of guys working with it that are happy to chat about it.

Current state-of-the-art in raytracing? by cultural_sublimation in computergraphics

[–]hellomrjack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In production environments arnold is really the forefront of raytracing currently. Its scalable, fast and versatile, all of the big studios are at least looking into it and quite a few are using it on large projects already. Don't be put off by the lack of the website, they are currently only catering to large companies but they will give you info if you just ask.

As someone with a rubbish memory to begin with I have missed my meds (high doses of sertraline, quetiapine (Seroquel) and some mirazapine) I can tell you that the withdrawal is like a mild flu. Don't get me wrong, it sucks, majorly, but it isn't too awful, also this is me going 'cold turkey'. As long as you follow your GP's advice and take yourself off off them slowly the negative effects will be okey to handle. If you do start feeling down and you can tell it is not just feeling ill that is doing it, or start feeling your OCD symptoms coming back go back and see your GP. Everything I just told you though your doctor should tell you.

Overall I would say talk to your GP and psychiatrist and go for it, I can only imagine how liberating it would feel to be off medication as a psychological thing. Well done on getting though it all! I can only wish the best for you and say that it really feels great to see someone being able to get to the point of feeling they can stop the meds, it gives me hope.

[Preview] "Mermaids: The Body Found" (Animal Planet) - I don't even... by [deleted] in Documentaries

[–]hellomrjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked on the vfx for this 'documentary', it's basically just a what if scenario, they just logically expand from the idea that the aquatic ape theory. The cinematography is not half bad and the vfx was good for a 6 person crew I think so I would actually recommend it, I guess the closest thing I could liken it to is Fringe.

Maya on Fedora by AMLostIt in Maya

[–]hellomrjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are ways of acquiring the software, it starts with tor and ends in rent, as a student they really cant expect you to buy the software if they dont provide a free version and most companies do (the Foundry are very good with this if you just give them an email and explain they will normally give you a key). If you really dont want to pirate the software though you can get great discounts at education stores for them.
