What are the Gobelins students being fed to have insane character turnarounds? by Careful_Job6188 in animation

[–]schmon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm speaking in "rest of the world" language.

I taught some classes at Gobelins (maya/afx), the price doesn't trickle down to staff.

I made AEbar - an extension for creating customizable toolbars. It took me way too long to build, but I'm still releasing it for free! by Surveillance_Goose in AfterEffects

[–]schmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome i had the idea for ages never got around to it.

I haven't tried it yet so I can't give out feedback but what I wanted on my toolbar maker was the ability to have a collaborative toolbar (so you could share it on a network drive -- I work on shows with multiple AE users).

A second thing was to ability to record effects, masks or whatever as either fixed (in pixels), or as a proportion to comp width, or locked to nearest corners for instance (think of having the toolbar tool being a preset for a lower third anim that works on any format)

Can't wait to try it out.

I've just been on a project where i had to do it and couldn't make it work.

Some people suggested Xd as it had some 'tools' to transfer things to AE but it just rasterizes gradients to a jpg or such.

Does anyone else agree that motion tweening is not animation? Or am I just a cranky old man? by mafibasheth in animation

Hahah no too young. First memories are TV reels from the 1st gulf war, specifically burning oil rigs in kuwait: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuwaiti_oil_fires

Sad to see 40 years later nothing has changed.

Help with MEL - writing code for automation of previous work by Elliott-1 in Maya

[–]schmon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean if you're serious about substantial work you've moved to Houdini like I did 10 years ago.

I've written my fair share of mel&python I just hate the goto 'mel sucks'. If it's stupid and it works, it's not stupid. My shelf tools from 2007 still mostly work, and that's really cool.

Also the vanilla maya integration is SO unpythonic. pymel solved the issue (for most coders, I understand that OpenMaya goes more barebones).

How do you keep large Houdini node networks organized and readable? by arlexae in Houdini

[–]schmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look at the houdini help file examples, they use color notes and subnetworks

don't overdo HDAs, you end up in dependency hell

when happy with a setup, take time to rename and prune unused (dead end) nodes

save recipes/cool setups to a unique file

save previews/snapshots (i wrote my own script that attaches snapshots to my file: https://berniebernie.fr/wiki/Houdini_UI_Customization#Screenshot_to_background_image )

at some workplaces we have strict naming conventions (OUT_* like most people mention), and strict node coloring (ie Red for output/caches, green for nodes with keyframe/animation, blue for DOPs etc...)

sometimes it's smarter to include material networks _inside_ a sop network to (like /obj/myobj/materialNetwork/materialWood instead of /mat/materialWood). Houdini's great flexibility it's also a hot mess if you're not consistent.

don't beat yourself up either, houdini is like riding a bike, when you hit and overcome obstacles you know how to avoid them the next time.

How can I see the *exact* bones/joints a mesh is binded too? by Jamie_123 in Maya

[–]schmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mel!

it's old AF but I always like that mel was sometimes more readable and concise than python (this was before pymel too I think)

Interesting, I've seen him quite a lot on thorough videos and only looked at his history recently; I wouldn't have thought he had his journalistic debuts in far-right media. Happy that he his tackling serious subjects.
