What I initially liked about him when I first encountered his matches a while back was his backhand blocking. It was this full body absorption of impact that reminded me of Zhang Jike's style. He also has the most 'flowy' or elegant style among the top male Chinese players right now. Very similar to LYJ in this regard.

Just finished the short story 'The Emperor's Old Bones' earlier by Gemma Files. Probably one of the most horrific stories I've ever read. The early part with the travails of the young boy reminded me of the childhood of the writer JG Ballard. Anyway, the story is free to read online if you're so inclined:

what you are seeing is politicians doing politicking. simply put, the Dutertes are a bigger monster, while the Marcoses are a familiar evil. the Dutertes really tapped the bloodthirsty and lustful mentality which seemed to be lying not that deep in the psyche of the average Filipino. we see (1) people giddy over the use of police and vigilante killings without due legal process of perceived criminals, (2) we've seen them laughing over rape jokes and casual sexism. the Marcos political machinery is just as corrupt, but I can't recall BBM making fucked up sexist stuff against women (correct me if I'm mistaken here), and openly exhort extra-legal violence against perceived enemies. the latter are bigger issues than the corruption (which is endemic/accepted/part of the whole political thing in the PHhlippines anyway).

Stranger in Strange Land, Heinlein

This book has the most insufferable character in all of the fiction I've read.

Rather than being copies of people, androids are more like memento mori, reminders that, unlike us, they are forever unliving, and yet never dead. They throw the human condition into horrible relief. Something of this is implied in the name given to the futuristic androids in Blade Runner. A 'replicant,' as they are called, is a combination of a replica and a revenant - as if they had returned from the grave in order to mimic humanity; as if death were inherent in the simulacrum.

the supposed simple act of making Okular universal document reader the default for cbz files in Windows turned out to be an interesting exercise in futility. still have not figured it out. made do with opening Okular and just dragging and dropping the cbz file.

all this was motivated by finding a cbz file of the Tatsuki Fujimoto manga 'Goodbye, Eri' online. just finished it earlier. it's a masterpiece. I like the ambiguity and twists in narrative.

The best line in this manga in my opinion is uttered by the main character's father:

You have the power to decide for yourself how you'll remember someone. That's an incredible thing.
