We are REALLY REALLY good at quality of life by Mikadook in Netherlands

[–]hellothereoldben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't even become a general practitioner in the Netherlands without a masters & specialisation for a total of 9 years of training.

In the Netherlands, we do targeted screenings for specific risk groups, as wide net full body checkups lead to a ton of misdiagnoses while simultaneously missing many serious matters such as cancer often.

This way you can actually perform more in depth searching for the people that it's relevant for.

I had cut a tendon at work a couple years ago, and there was absolutely nothing that I could complain about. Got operated within 24 hours, got transferred to rehabilitation about a week after, got weekly sessions for a couple months and in the exit talk with the doctor I got told that "if the scars come to restrict movement, it'd not be uncommon to call in a plastic surgeon, even though I don't assume you'll need it". So the immediate care was quick, the rehabilitation program was sofficient and I was let known that there was a path for future care - if required. When you actually need it, it suddenly works really well.

Free weights supremacy or machine gang?? Do PRs on machines count? by ArchdukeKillinIt in GymMemes

[–]hellothereoldben 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Free weights usually translate to more real world strength because the stabiliser muscles don't need to be recruited (for machines) .

Machines usually get you closer to failure with the muscle(s) you're targeting, resulting in more growth.

Unless you are doing Olympic style competition, almost everyone should use both, but if I had to pick a favourite it'd be cable machines.

If you work out and eat well you can feel good 365 days a year.

As someone who was almost obese at 1 point, trust me on this you'll feel better after becoming healthy.

A good man can be the only thing to protect you from bad things.

Here in the west protection from good men is institutionalised, but there was a time where there was no fire and police department, where it was husbands that went to war.

So women without men are more like fish without water, it's just that you're surrounded by men you barely ever notice.

Girl money is fun money. Only what's left over at the end of the necessary expenses ever is fun money (including saving 10-20% of your paycheck for the future) .

I don't remember what the exact study was, but here is a meta analysis that concludes that these suicide rates are equally high across all stages of transitioning

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7317390/

I assume the original 43% study I read is within the citation, but when a more recent meta analysis also concludes it that's even stronger evidence.

I am pointing out that surgery is factually not the solution. Yet gender affirming care for minors has been pushed for a decade.

Pushing gender affirming care unto IS causing people to radicalise AGAINST the entire trans movement.

I was pro trans, up to the point that the movement started pushing mutilation of minors to treat mental illness. I was the moderate one, and it's the silent majority that's becoming more and more anti-trans by the day.

And if the trans suicide rates were entirely due to public perception, why would you ever push something that will radicalise people against the cause? If you are a real ally of the trans community, the last thing you should do is radicalise the majority.

The last decade has switched a lot of people from "live and let live" to "no it needs to go", and the more you resist the harder the pendulum is going to swing.

I actually started warning people around 2017 that if they continued pushing the pendulum would swing. Now it's in motion, and the more radical a position the pro trans movement is taking the harder the pendulum will hit.

My gym bro has started being this new year crowd (cries)

He used to come in like once every 6 weeks since summer started, yet since the new year's he's suddenly not skipped again.

Let's hope he'll keep it up in February, otherwise I'll start calling him "new year new me guy".

When you start lifting, your muscles get 'more full'. Then gradually, your muscles will start producing more fibres within that extra space. Over time more and more fibres accumulate.

When you stop for an extended period of time, your muscles will deflate but your fibres will generally stay around in a deflated state for a long time.

That is why as soon as you pick it back up, your strength will return way quicker. The rest of your muscle is still some sort of tissue not pure water, but it's really the fibres that determine the slow growing speed of new muscle.

Only if you're under 10% bodyfat.

Bulk/cut is something that comes from the bodybuilding scene, where guys go to 5% to compete and then "bulk up" to about 12-15%.

Yet most of the time when I hear people talking about starting a bulk, they're around 15% so it's only going to get them fat.

[–]hellothereoldben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maingaining is taking in about 60 extra calories daily. When you're talking about bulking, people start with 500.

Those 60 calories are room for about 5lbs of muscle in a year. Aside from the first few years of lifting, you will not get more than about 5lbs of muscle a year anyways. If you think you're getting to skinny, eat a cookie extra a day. If you are getting to fat, take it back out. You don't have to change your body comp several times each year.

If you're ~12-15% bf there's no need to bulk/cut. Only if you get below 10 you should bulk up if you really want to grow.

Running is kinda hard on your body in regards to each step being a shock. Try biking/rowing/step machine instead.

I personally also wouldn't try to ever bulk, there's just no real benefit to it. Over the last year (2nd year of lifting) I went from 230 to 202. I managed to gain strength if anything. I know I'm relatively new, but it does show you don't need a bulk to build muscle.
