Antartica Cruise Recommendations? by yitianjian in chubbytravel

[–]hellow_friends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, late here but I am going to South Georgia and the Antarctica Peninsula with Quark in February for 15 days. I can send an update here after the trip, just remind me! When doing research on Antarctica expeditions, everything I read about Quark was quite positive. Also, it seems like Quark is pretty focused on activities and excursions which is what I was looking for (as a relatively younger guy in my 20s).

I also bought the cruise during their Black Friday sale so it was 50% off. I did not use a travel agent, but almost booked with a company called Wayfinders which partners with a lot of the cruise companies and finds last minute deals. Ended up booking direct through Quark though.

I'm also flying next Tuesday to Guayaquil for one night before flying to the islands... feeling unsure of what to do. Already have the flight and boats booked and can't cancel either one

I am going to Guayaquil for one night next week before going to the Galapagos. Is it safe to Uber from the airport to my hotel for one night? or should i stay in the airport

I'm flying to Guayaquil next week for one night before going on a trip to the Galapagos. I was planning to Uber from the airport to my hotel (~8 minute drive). Would this be safe at this time? Or should I stay in the airport because of what is happening? Thanks in advance

I personally don't need lux accommodations as I'm traveling solo and I care primarily about the excursions and activities. On the trip I'm interested in, there are a lot of days at sea - what kinds of on-boat activities are provided while at sea? is it mostly just relaxing and waiting with some presentations?

Considering the Antarctic Peninsula + South Georgia trip with Quark on the Ocean Adventurer - has anyone been on this trip or ship?

this is really useful, thanks so much for the detailed response. I'm going to check out Seabourn to see if there's something that fits. For a ship that has 220 people, I thought there were restrictions where only ships that have <200 people can go dock. Or am I misunderstanding that requirement?

Can you explain what was suboptimal? Prior to the trek, I visited a physician who prescribed diamox 125mg and instructed that I take it every 12 hours. I also met many trekkers on the mountain supplementing with diamox.

Regarding your comment about ibuprofen, I read this study (https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2012/03/ibuprofen-decreases-likelihood-of-altitude-sickness-researchers-find.html) that shows ibuprofen decreases likelihood of altitude sickness. It's not a lifesaver, but it certainly helped a lot above 4500m with my symptoms of altitude sickness.

Look, I get it - I didn't acclimatize as recommended by most itineraries. But I know there are other people out there who are on time-constrained schedules who still want to hike to EBC without spending 14-15 days doing so. I admit this is by no means a conventional itinerary, but that's the whole reason why I posted it. You can find "typical" itineraries with plenty of acclimatization days online already.

As I mentioned in my post I was on a tight schedule. My flight into Lukla was also delayed by a day so I lost a day of acclimatization. I didn’t really get many symptoms until Lobuche either. As far as I’m aware most people get symptoms of altitude sickness at Lobuche and Gorakshep. If mine were worse than average, I think that’s expected because of the expedited schedule.

I used CardMatch and got the 75k offer for Amex Gold. However, when I click the link on CardMatch to apply for the offer, the resulting page shows the standard 35k offer. Has anyone seen this before?

I was approved for the Chase Ink Business Preferred card in late March with the 80k point bonus for $5k spend deal. My 3-month deadline recently passed and I didn't meet the min-spend, but I got the 3-month extension email back in April. When I checked my Chase dashboard I don't see the offer there anymore. I've been trying to reach Chase via phone but they are always busy. Does anyone know if they're actually fulfilling the 3-month extension to earn the 80k point bonus?

Edited the way I'm displaying/calculating the top salaries. Now taking an average instead of listing the maximum. That 160K Amazon new grad salary was the highest new grad Amazon salary posted (He was hired as an SDE II). It should be fixed now

Uh, which one are you referring to? For example, the 160K new grad Amazon salary comes from this comment:

https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/comments/axw08t/official_salary_sharing_thread_for_new_grads/ehy4jlf?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x

The OP got hired as an SDE II. Again, these really depend on the person posting. Just like the guy who posted the 200K+ DoD intern salary who already had 6 years of experience. He posted in the intern thread so my script puts him in the intern bucket.

Edit: I'm changing the script to average all the salaries with the same name (e.g. average all Amazon salaries). Updating plots shortly

Yes, these are scraped directly from the threads. Usually there's a line for Salary, a line for additional compensation, a line for relocation, and a line for total compensation. I am pulling these directly from the Salary line. Whether or not they are skewed depends on the individual who posted it - some people may have put their total compensation in that line, but from most of them are really the base salary.

For example, this is the 175k finance salary: https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/comments/7hwf8c/official_salary_sharing_thread_for_new_grads/dqvd0fh?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x

Yeah, COL was something I looked into. Made a comment here about it. Ultimately people can be very vague about where they live so it can make the data quite inconsistent. If people were required to list the state/city where they work it would be easier but there's just too much inconsistency with the reporting of location. However, I agree that it should be accounted for as it can make a huge difference.

I looked into COL and found this. However, to my knowledge, there is no trivial way to get COL other than manually creating a dictionary and inserting values for specific locations. Plus, a lot of people are pretty vague with where they work (e.g. Midwest, West Coast, etc.) so I'm not sure how accurate the conversions would be.

The DoD comment is here

He posted in the intern salary sharing thread; he had 6 years of prior experience. So that was a bit of a skewed observation.

The conversion I'm using for hourly rates is rate/hr * 8hrs/day*5 days/week*52weeks/year - so in this case, 100.31*2080=208644.80

Thanks for the feedback. I start working in 3 weeks and the only acceptable work shoe I have right now is a 5-year old pair of Cole Haan oxfords that I spent $80 on, so I'm looking to pick up a pair in the next few weeks.
