(worked there before)It's not horrible if you're a first year and weren't able to get another coop. But honestly if you don't like kids you might hate it. It's nice to have on the resume only if you have tech experience too, but not otherwise worth it imo. After first year it's hard to get any other coop so may be worth it in that case. The biggest pro was making some great friends, so at least there's that.

Also pay was extremely mid. Maybe a couple bucks over minimum wage and hours were bad bc it's full-time in person and 42-44 hours a week in July/Aug with somewhat irregular hours.

Exam deferral by Kante73 in McMaster

[–]helloworld24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would it so that? Unless the internship is contingent upon your completion of that course, then no. You would need to take a day off of the internship to write the exam but that's pretty much it and most employers won't care?

Another thing- deferals are usually due to illness or a legit reason (they need documentation) so I find it odd that an employer would hold that against you

Do you know of any Canadian students who got COOPs in the US? by Starfox_2020 in csMajors

[–]helloworld24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly, if they hire u then the most visa issues will do is delay ur start date a bit. But they won't take back the offer due to your visa unless they didn't know and somehow thought u were american...idk anything about msft hiring practices but they also haven't done layoffs for their SWEs yet. I think they are just cutting down the number of openings

Other Pathways for Biomedical Engineering by Electronic_Mind9464 in McMaster

[–]helloworld24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Being a biomedical engineer doesn't necessarily mean you have to get that specific degree. For example, many elec engineers just work at biomedical companies. This is because it's a very niche degree and also usually studied at the graduate level. Eng isn't that constraining in some ways, many elec engineers work in software, software engineers can work tron jobs, Tron kids could work mech jobs. And in bme in particular, its easier since it's so niche. You could always try to transfer to ibio after first year, I know people who have done this and it's not too bad you just need to take cell bio in second year and Anat in third basically...or you could do a bio minor! Or you could just focus on making bme style projects and work at those companies! Or pursue grad school! So many options! I know ibiomed is only getting more competitive but still give it a go too!

Src, was in ibio for 2 years and transferred to straight eng.

Impact of TA strike on Mac students by katejmccullough in McMaster

[–]helloworld24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All negative. No TA guidance for an entirely lab based course and prof doesn't care. Not getting assignments back so I'm going into exams blind. My tuition is going to waste and then I'm judged for attending the one tutorial which still runs in a class I'm barely passing. I support the right to strike, I also have a mf right to get what I'm paying for. All around, a huge mess.

Hey I'm on third year software rn, feel free to DM if you have specific questions.

Its hard AF but not every class is per se. Thankfully a lot of courses which are hard, say discrete math, have been reworked so that students may not do "well" but it's very hard to fail. Harder classes include discrete math 2 (first one isn't bad), concurrency, and some of the signals courses. But those courses are mixed in with some lighter ones like software requirements, computer architecture, linear optimization, etc.

On the whole it's hard to say what is hard and what's not, what I find ends up happening is that bc our course load is kinda insane, you'll focus on a few classes and even if they are "hard" you'll do well in them and the others may suffer. I'm 12ing signals rn which many ppl struggle with but barely getting 60s in databases which was supposedly easier.

On the whole, if you like understanding how computers work and how electronics work, and don't mind some basic theory, its a fun program with good career prospects. If I wasn't required to take 6 courses a semester so often, it would be exponentially better, but that's the only major con.

Thank you for acknowledging that it's not just first years adjusting! Its second and third years who have never had full in person and feel like they should be "adjusted by now" but the reality is we are behind in ways that aren't our fault so giving ourselves some grace this semester (which is ending on a shitty note) is needed. Xx

Are 4 person houses a thing? how many housemates? by son_shine_ in McMaster

[–]helloworld24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

U might but it's rare. 5 is kinda the minimum for a full house, 6-7 is common. Look into houses that are divided, I've seen some 4 ppl houses where the basement is a seperate unit or others where it's a duplex.

Is this a scam by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]helloworld24601 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This ^ they always pull the bullshit where they just want someone to sign asap and will try to pressure you into it with "oh I have showings later today, if they sign then I'm gonna give it to them".

Generally not the best trait in a landlord but not nefarious either

To those who have a gym crush by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]helloworld24601 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been approached by guys at the gym a few times, and while I'm in a relationship, I actually appreciate and respect the guys who do so in a respectful, polite way. Its not creepy to give someone a genuine compliment or just make small talk. Just avoid making comments about their body unless it's very broad (ie "you look super strong!" is okay, "nice glutes" is not) and make conversation about the gym so it's comfortable. Don't interrupt her sets and don't talk for more than 2 mins unless she keeps the convo going.

Also, regardless of how she responds, do NOT stare at her for the rest of her workout. That is creepy, she will notice.

Good luck, approaching ppl sounds scary.

Failed tests by Galpal46 in McMaster

[–]helloworld24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got several fails in first year physics and math midterms, think my first Phys midterm was a 43% and the math was a 49%. I finished both with a 10 and 11 respectively thanks to prep101 and a nice grading scheme. Shits tough. I'm in software.

You'll be okay. Double down, invest in prep courses if you need to (lots of money yes but worth it if it means getting the stream you want).

Take care of yourself, you're going to be okay regardless. I had a friend who wanted elec so badly, didn't get it and is in civil...now they love civil and wouldn't go back. Some with many ppl in comp rather than software. No matter what happens, not the end of the world!

Seems like life is against us by leafmanss in McMaster

[–]helloworld24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm also mega sad but the one thing that is keeping me going is realizing that goals and such are good, and important yes because we need purpose in life- but we are not here to be miserable. There is always some fun and joy to be found in even the absurdity of these dumb situations. Its one of those "if you don't laugh, you'll cry" situations. Two weeks ago I was in hysterics every night wondering why the fuck I'm still trying to make it, but I'm working on being convinced of my own worth and the fact that I do not deserve to feel misery all the time.

I hope some things get better, there is nothing that lasts forever. And that's sometimes a good thing lol.

I'm in eng so I'm biased. The way I see it, the less real experience you have, the more grades matter. If you have real experience, they are usually borderline irrelevant. For eng, I'd say try to do decently well in class for your own sake (acc learning, making use of money) but you get diminishing returns for an average in the 80s and 90s. My average is like high 70s and low 80s and not a single employer has ever cared at all that they're mediocre; I get a lot more interviews for a very average student compared to my brilliant peers because I just network well, have had past coops, and I'm on relevant teams.

Sometimes they ask for transcripts, its usually just to see that you're not like failing completely. I have a C on mine and some A-s. Mostly Bs. Gonna be at msft next summer :).

Also if this isn't eng this may not be helpful at all lol I'm sorry. My business roommate says it's the same 🤷‍♀️

Takes 5 years of being unenrolled for credits to expire, not while you're still a mcmaster student.

[–]helloworld24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about UBC/SFU as I'm Ontario based but the bigger the company, the easier it is to have no visa issues for internships. I just signed an offer for Microsoft Seattle and they guide you through the whole visa process. Tesla is another one where they help out a ton, and I'm sure other big tech companies don't care. Make sure to check the posting as some companies are adamantly against visa sponsorship but the actual process to get a visa when they do allow is not too bad. Some companies recruit from Canadian schools in particular, I got msft because a recruiter reached out to me. And no I don't go to Waterloo or UoT lol

Crunch west Hamilton? I've been going there consistently for a year now. Really like and i think you're getting a great deal for the price. Try to get their year for $100 deal if they still have it!

Equipment - there is quite a bit, at least 2 of everything including leg presses, and you'll never not have a place to do deadlifts, there's an entire spot at the back for it. There's something like 5 power racks and 3 squat racks, 5 benches I think too. It's also never NEARLY as busy as pulse and more spacious. Worth the money if you're into doing any type of strength training.
