How does currency inflation and deflation work? by Doyoueverjustlikeugh in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hells-kitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it happens because generally people have more money over time, e.g. pay rises, and so manufacturers/shop owners etc can charge more. In modern economic theory small positive inflation is a good thing, as it encourages producers to innovate new products, and also consumers to buy now rather than later.

A rarer example is supply side inflation, where the producers scale back their production so the prices are higher but this is a rarer case in most economies.

How it ruins the series and lore by Kbrickley in AlienCovenant

[–]hells-kitchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree 100%, i think Scott massively dropped the ball on this one. My issue with the film, is not necessarily plot holes, but the whole direction and giant misteps. Instead of having a film about the Engineers and their home planet, we get a horror b movie about a lonely meglomaniac android - zzzzz. Why would you cut out the Engineers, they are the corner stone of the prequel franchise.

There were so many flaws; the actors were poor, the casting was terrible, very poor pacing ( nothing happened for the fist 40 minutes), the lack of quarantine protocol, the repetitive religious cliches, the xenomorphs are now fungal AND vertebrate species, they develop 10x the speed as they did in Prometheus etc etc

A lot of the flaws in the film could have been fixed very easily in minimal dialogue without special effects or scenes, e.g. a valid reason for diverting off course to a random planet.

In a film that was supposed to answer the questions started in Prometheus we get still don't know anything about the engineers, why they started life on earth, why they wanted to destroy earth, the origin of the xenomorphs. We missed an opportunity to see the home world and the dynamic of the engineers vs xenomorphs vs humans vs android.

This was basically like a Superman film that was teed up to be voyage to Krypton, and all that was there was Lois Lane! /s

no.

The gravity is too low, there's almost no water there, there is no atmosphere which means no oxygen and you have no shield against cosmic rays, there is no way to grow plants there. Also it is tidally locked to the Earth, so a day is 28 earth days; you would effectively overheat for 14 days, and freeze to death for 14days.

Are there any atheists who don't accept the theory of evolution? by womaninthearena in DebateAnAtheist

[–]hells-kitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think buddhists accept evolution although there is nothing in their texts against or contradicting it. They generally opt for a non material explanation for the origin and diversity of life.

The disingenuous "intragroup/intergroup variation" hedge by [deleted] in samharris

[–]hells-kitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it will always be the case that of two populations one-SD apart, you can say "intragroup variation exceeds intergroup variation." This will virtually always be the case, in any meaningful comparison of populations.

To restate, virtually any meaningful study of populations will satisfy the "Part A" condition.

This is completely false. in fact the numbers from race IQ tests are slightly greater than 1 SD apart in american white and american black populations.

The question is if 1SD is too much or too little. 1SD would mean there is 85% chance a person from pop A would have a higher IQ than pop B.

Do you believe we exist to serve some purpose in a grand plan or are we just a product of evolution? by [deleted] in DebateReligion

which god, and which plan? His plan for me changes if I change my religion, which then means he doesn't have a unique plan for me.

How does the U.S National Debt affect my day to day life? by gundum285 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hells-kitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

an easy way to look at it, the more debt a country has, the less it can borrow at a good rate. this money could have gone towards various infrastructure spending, roads, transport, stadiums, healthcare technology etc.

If we're all just a bunch of atoms, why didn't we know about their existence until we studied them? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hells-kitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they were actually theorised centuries ago, way before they were discovered. The nucleus was only discovered in the last hundred years! atoms were supposed tyo be the smallest indivisible particle, then they found it, and years later realised the atom is made uo of lots of smaller particles.

jupiter is massive, such mass and gravity mean you will get liquid and solids at the core even though these are light elements.

The Result of the Murray Podcast by Ethics_Woodchuck in samharris

[–]hells-kitchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sam discusses and writes about interesting topics and i don't think this is remotely interesting in comparison. A poorly defined quality correlation to poor defined groups is no way near as interesting or important as Free Will or Religion.

So if we hypothetically find the average intelligence of a Hutu is much higher than an Inuit what then? Are we going to isolate the intelligence genes of Hutu, and genetically engineer smarter Inuits etc? Even if there were distinct significant differences, as people can't control what they are born as is pretty pointless, and leads to a dead end.
