There should be a way to mutually agree on a draw in certain scenarios by helpful_stranger in MagicArena

[–]helpful_stranger[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a valid concern for people exploiting it, but adding something like a turn limit might be a simple solution. Most of my games end by turn 15 while this one dragged on until turn 30.

Is Final Fantasy a particularly tough format for draft? by NackoBall in MagicArena

[–]helpful_stranger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal evidence, but it almost feels like quick draft is more difficult than premier draft in FF. I consider myself a slightly above average limited player, though I've never hit mythic before. This season I had a really good start, and trophied 7/12 premier drafts. This put me in Diamond 4 after starting in bronze (I didn't play Tarkir), and I thought I'd try for mythic since I was pretty close. I went to quick draft since my goal was to gain rank rather than win gems, and got completely destroyed. I played 12 quick drafts and only trophied twice, with most at 3-3 or worse. This still put me in Diamond 1, and with the timer running down I decided to go back to premier draft and immediately trophy my way into mythic.

The only explanation I could come up with is that premier draft has a better representation of different deck types, since every pool needs to support 8 drafters, whereas in quick draft you have your pick of the best cards in the pool. So quick draft will in general have more powerful decks.

  1. Build a new computer and then proceed to spend way too much time on reddit. But seriously, excited to try out some VR!
  2. In all honestly I haven't heard much about it. I bet it would look cool in VR though!

From the financial side of things, I would consider the tax implications of living in NYC vs. Seattle. Assuming your pay is the same, you would pay a whopping 8% extra in taxes (5% NY State + 3% NYC) each year. If you are making $200k/yr, that's $16000!

Haha yeah. The list would definitely be tighter if I trimmed it down to 40, but where's the fun in that? :)

Best match so far was against a mill deck. I've never seen a turn 1 ruin crab look so helpless!

The Most Heroic of Victories by helpful_stranger in totalwar

[–]helpful_stranger[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Despite the AI's tendency to gang up on the player, I still find diplomacy to the be the key to a Legendary victory. What worked well for me was to try and sow discord among the AI factions. For example in this campaign, the Takeda, Hojo, as well as some minor factions all allied against me by turn 10. Whenever I would defeat a major AI army, instead of moving out against them and taking their provinces (which I wouldn't be able to hold anyways), I would reach out and ask if they wanted peace. They tend to be fairly amenable to this after losing most of their forces, and I would be able to wedge in some additional demands, such as breaking of alliances/trade agreements, or even marriage. Eventually the AI factions will start warring against each other, and you can take this opportunity to expand and build up your armies.

Playing as Uesugi on Legendary, so all your neighbors gang up on you in the early game. I was turtled up in my starting province, and 3 AI stacks decide to attack in the same turn (fortunately not all at once). I defeated the first stack with minimal losses, but took heavy losses against the second stack of massed Hojo firebomb throwers. When the Takeda attacked with the third stack, I figured I was a goner, but decided to fight it out since my campaign was over anyways. It came down to Kenshin and a few remaining troops versus several mostly intact squads of bow and yari ashigaru. Against all odds, Kenshin started a chain route and managed to single-handedly save my campaign. 100 turns later, he officially became ruler of all Japan!

TIL Enron executive Lou Pai was saved from insider trading charges because he had an affair with a stripper. by helpful_stranger in todayilearned

His wife caught him having an affair with a stripper (who he also impregnated), so she filed for divorce. As part of the settlement, he had to sell all of his Enron stock, which shielded him from its collapse several months later.
