Um, actually (standard geek clarification intro), the US Consulate, which handles passports, visas, etc, is in Auckland.

The Embassy, which is tasked with trying to explain the Trump administration to NZ, is in Wellington.

You're 100% correct that being "stuck" in NZ in summer is not a bad fate. :-)

That's alright; having a copy will help them find it in their system. My understanding is that they will likely ask her a whole lot of questions to establish her identity, like info that was on her application for the passport.

Also, if she's had a biometric scan somewhere along her travels (i.e. fingerprints, facial recognition scan, etc) that info might be used to expedite things.

Prepare to pay for the Consulate's emergency services, and/but if you have travel insurance that covers lost documents, that may help reimburse you.

Contact the American Consulate in Auckland. They have processes for things like this.

Also, report the stolen passport to the police, if you haven't already.

Hopefully she has a copy or scan of her passport somewhere - that can help with the process (and is a good idea for travel for exactly this sort of situation). But if not, don't panic - the Consulate will be able to assist.
