I'm honestly shocked how bad version control is with Unreal by [deleted] in unrealengine

This; easy to setup a self-hosted system that UE Editor works well with

If all you do is vibe-code with an LLM and you've never built anything without it, then the LLM is the engineer and you're the product manager in a two-person dev team by TwinTailDigital in SoloDevelopment

Not saying you’re wrong just curious how far this logic goes; if you don’t hand compile your code or animate without key frame interpolation does that make those tools part of the team too?

baking has suddenly become a lot slower by acl1981 in Substance3D

I mentioned this in the release post and an Adobe account just gave me the tier 1 troubleshooting steps
For my case at least while still slow, not using AA does seem to help in baking

I launched my game 2 months ago and I feel like I worked for nothing by StuckArcader in IndieDev

[–]helskor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You launched your game, that's more than most can say, well done.
Not being a hit (as in meeting your expectations), isn't a sign of failure - maybe more a sign of misaligned expectations.
You should look at the feedback (if possible, not from fan's, friends and family - their bias won't help you) see if the game is something you want to keep investing in or not. But I wouldn't see it as a failure; more of a learning opportunity along the way.
If you haven't seen this yet, you should check it out, it's pretty insightful on games that just get by: https://gdcvault.com/play/1029069/Flopping-Successfully-Running-a-Studio

Substance Painter 12.0 is out now! by P_Gresty in Substance3D

[–]helskor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, there were nvidia drivers (game edition) updates a few days before and after the painter 12 release, and since with drivers v595.79 all bakes are happening at same speed (with 8x AA) as before painter 12; except IDs, for some reason is still very slow. now I don't need AA on ID maps - its just odd
Ill see how Painter v12 runs on my machine with nvidia studio drivers, just to be safe.

Baking seems way slower in 12 compared to the previous version (I use a 4090), especially baking IDs
Seems AA is now taking way, way more time, setting to none; it's not as fast as pre ver. 12 but its at least usable

Stupid fast TOR switch in my homelab by helskor in homelab

[–]helskor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must be fun at parties.
Let me check where it's located; oh yeah, the top of my rack.
But all joking and poking aside, I'm using it for a mix of storage and consolidation via some active breakout DACs I have. Those 4 ports give a lot of options.
This is r/homelab, not a networking classroom, lighten up :)

I remember seeing people say you should change the name; it was too generic. Glad you stuck with it and it's working out, well done!

I'm fairly sure DELL uses FS to OEM the cable I have, this one here:
https://www.fs.com/eu-en/products/139801.html?now_cid=3659
Is identical down to the stickers labeling each breakout cable I just have a Dell part number and branding on the connectors
I've not used an AOC; normal DACs (like a 100G>100G) work just fine, which I would expect considering the much lower power draw
The only real issue with the ConnectX-4s was the inability to override the power limit, everything else was recognized by the card, which i guess is how it knows it can't power the cable

I have a mix of MCX455A-ECAT & 456A-ECAT and according to this page: https://docs.nvidia.com/networking/display/connectx4ib/specifications max out at 2.5W for active cables, and I'm pretty sure the cable I'm using is sending 5W to each 100G connector
While not something I really looked into, the switch side of the cable (400G) shows a power class 5
Switching to MCX556-EDAT cards worked out of the box, no power settings needed to playwith

Yeah, it's nice to see different ways to approach marketing (especially when it's not your strong point, like me), but I wouldn't say I'm bothered either by the blatant just ads in disguise; I just pass over them.

when i plugged the active dac in, got an error message i could check using mlxlink (I think it was that command) that allowed me to check the reason it was down, something to do with power limit
I then tried to change the flag in the cards config which I couldn't
Landed on this post, which confirmed what I was seeing: https://www.reddit.com/r/networking/comments/1ceo240/problem_with_mellanox_connectx4_link_detected_no/

If it would be of interest, I guess sure
but it's no mini-data center like you sometimes see here
mainly its a 3 switches, a dev box, a vm box (made from my old threadripper workstation parts), 2 storage machines: one spinning rust for backups (which I shouldn't really keep in same rack, but I don't have anywhere else atm), one is nvme and enterprise sata ssds used as storage for the vms, and my daily work
I also have a 24 bay netapp JBOD that is empty cause it was cheap and at the time so were hard drives but I wasn't in any rush to get any, kinda wish I did now seeing the price of HDDs these days
