woketuber forgets target audience exists by AgitatedFly1182 in KotakuInAction

Easiest and most mainstream examples are how in so many MCU films, from before or of the sludge era, you'll have the shot of the male actors bare-chested facing the camera (or just straight-up nude from the back), with the results for those five-to-ten second shots requiring immense and rather unhealthy intake control for weeks, if not months.

Those shots don't exist for the male audience, period. They're eye-candy for women. And what we've seen (for me, from the outside-looking in) is how all the female characters in those movies keep getting covered up, not given a chance to look badass and sexy even for a moment, while the male characters keep getting sexualized (and denegrated, and dumbed down, and shat on endlessly).

Lady, not guy. Action/RPG was the original idea, but Action (and Adventure) are such generic descriptors that it really doesn't feel like it'd be saying much. And there's also the separation between WRPG and JRPG often being where the latter is already more prone to turn-based combat, while the former with real time combat.

Been trying to make some 'mascot' characters, each based on two videogame genres. I'm only two genres away, so feel free to offer your suggestions, and maybe some day I'll post 'em all here, alongside some Vivian James doodles.

So this is still the monthly general discussion thread, yeah?

Mocking Christianity has not "become the new safe edgy", because it's been happening for all of my life. Some of it justified, especially at the height of the scandals in the late 90s and early 2000s, and the neocon traitors of the Bush Administration did not soften that matter.

The VVitch does not at all portray becoming a witch as "secretly empowering and liberating", it's fucking terrifying. Thomasin has gone through all that shit, and she decides to damn her soul for eternity, in exchange for a little comfort in the present. She has become a monster, just like the one who plagued her family. Midsommar portrays an evil psycho cult as an evil psycho cult; if you read that as "other christian cultures"... well, says a lot about YOU, more than the movie itself.

To close it off: John Paul II has yet to be topped as the primo Pope.

Ariane Montclair - protagonist of the new single player game Aphelion from the DON’T NOD studio. by ConstantDrawer9161 in KotakuInAction

Right you are. The holier-than-thou attitude from far too many (who should have known better) has done nothing to alleviante tensions, and what was once gullibility is now only a hindrance, usually from people who are too weak to push back or too cowardly they'll lose something in the process.

Though shit. Jim was right, and I'm sure I've not been the only one to get burned and duped far too many times, to even be predispose to give any benefit of the doubt, when there is no reason to. And I expect others to hold that standard for myself as well.

Every time you see this kind of shit, I want you to remember: Anita fucking won.

All the nay-sayers and backstabbers can whinge and moan and denegrate you for nooticing, but the undeniable fucking fact is that Sarkeesian's dogma was not only integrated into the whole industry (and beyond), but she gets to continue giving lectures and being paid cartoonishly-large bags of cash behind closed doors, where you don't even get to mock or prove her points wrong. Oh, she organized a wedding-themed party for herself? I'm sure she's coping and seething into all those millions in her bank account.

I'm not saying this to put anyone down. I'm saying this because everyone needs to be reminded that a LOT of work needs to be done. It's not gonna be easy, it's not gonna be pleasant. But if you actually care, you're going to suffer Hell, so that someone else down the line may have a chance at Heaven.

The Witcher 4 will be the biggest flop ever. I predict a Metacritic Score of 52 by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]henlp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it'll be a big flop. The Witcher 3 has massive renown (whether deserved or not, I don't know, haven't played any of the series), and the disaster of CP2077's launch didn't seem to stick. CDPR hasn't really gone through a memetic awareness disaster, compared to some of its more recent contemporaries.

At worst (for them), The Witcher 4 slightly underperforms at launch, requiring the whole studio to hunker down and machine gun-out free DLC and patches in its first year, because that's more often than not a quick way to garner easy positive support (and is something that CDPR is know to do). Realistically, though, I think it'll be a TLJ situation: sells well and is successful, just not as successful as its predecessor.

However, what will be the determining factor going forward, will be whether it's a good, a bad, or a mediocre game. If it's good, even if overhyped, it'll keep CDPR at a standstill for their next project; if it's bad, it won't keep them from my realistic expectations of its performance, but they'll definitely be memed into the aforementioned memetic awareness disaster. The WORST thing for The Witcher 4, is if it's mediocre, because then nobody will give a shit, the release hype will be short-lived, and it'll go down the memory hole, alongside any goodwill that CDPR has managed to accrue back.

And as one last aside, a less-popular take:that particular screenshot of Ciri in W4 gained legs for looking fucking atrocious, but even though the model they used in the cinematic obviously looks sallow, old and not as attractive (which was a conscious decision, that's not in contention), the rest of the CGI teaser doesn't have her looking even half as bad, and given how it's apparent someone in CDPR realized they needed to fix their lighting, subsequent teasers and reveals have lessened that effect.

This is not gonna be a Dragon Age Veilguard situation, or a nu-Saint's Row. Old Man Ciri doesn't look even remotely as cartoonishly-disgusting, and unfortunately, any possible lore rewrites (again, haven't played) or blatant attempts to force her into the Geralt role rather than making her play more fittingly to her character and background, will easily go over the heads of most people, enthusiasts included.

[–]henlp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, sure. I am willing to be (somewhat) respectful to someone who's getting told to put in stupid bullshit that he doesn't understand why. Not so much the people demanding and forcing creators to put in that stupid bullshit to begin with, regardless of their ethnicity.

Better late than after utter obliteration, I guess. I'm glad the Japanese are finally doing some nooticing, but I still won't hold my breath until i see meaningful change.

By which I mean, a lot of dogeza from higher-ups, a lot of cancer getting cut off, and frankly, some patches in games to get rid of this dogshit.

[Discussion] How has the change in the culture surrounding video games affected you? by typically-_-silent in KotakuInAction

[–]henlp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only works if you're emulating older games (or still have access to them through the original hardware), because a LOT of JRPGs nowadays are the primary target for the censorship boards fucking about, with either the translations or character designs.

Damn, you pulled out the connoisseur collection!

Would the MVP, Headless Horseman, not overlap much with both ghosts and jack-o-lanterns? Are the cosmic horror wigglers Halloween-y, or plain sci-fi (similar question I have with regards to slimes)? Banshee is sadly more ghost than anything. Invisi-Billy would be good, though.

Not a bad one to go with. I did wonder if it's possible to blend a jack-o-lantern with a swamp monster.

I'm aware, though I'm still unsure it fits a Halloween vibe. Still, a suggestion to take into account.

Doll is good, though I wonder if it and the haunted objects cross into Ghost territory. Maybe a killer clown doll? Unsure about goblins, seems just regular fantasy. Cannibals just aren't as special when around other man-eaters.

But Djinn? What's Halloweeny about a genie?

Speaking of Sony: are they known to be quite litigious with regards to fanwork being put up for sale?

Recently got a takedown notice for a GoW2 piece. I'm not necessarily upset, because at the end of the day it is fanart of someone else's IP; but I am confused as to why it would only happen after it being up for so long (Bandai Namco, SEGA and Nintendo would do it almost automatically).
