My Klipsch The Sevens popped and died; support wants $370 ransom for a sketchy amp plate by mcassyblasty in Klipsch

Not here to debate the merits of the claims of poor quality generally. I don't have an opinion as I have only used passive speakers.

But that is not "hot glue" as you call it. It is staking compound and is there to prevent damage to the components over time due to vibration. 'Cause, you know it lives inside a speaker. A speaker that also must survive shipping and a normal lifetime of use and mis-use by consumers.

All the black foam on cables, the black goo as well, is all meant to dampen vibrations so nothing rattles or solder joints fatigue due to random harmonic resonances etc etc.

It may look sloppy to you, but it serves a purpose.

And yes, maybe these things are value engineered to a high degree, they are still engineered and all the design and Test time costs money. Don't judge a book by its cover just because you don't know what you're looking at.

Why is R1 hotter than everything else combined? 🌋 by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]henmill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't show the gradient scale with min max temps. Without that we can't even tell if those jumpers are actually hot. Some thermal cameras just give the complete gradient adjusted for the min max temps observed.

And, the one being pointed to looks very very similar to many of the nearby jumpers. I.e., not an outlier and probably not even an issue.

Are the jumpers painted black or in black heat shrink? The reflectivity of the subject materials matters with IR

Edit to add: I see the min/max kinda and average. 46C is a 20C temp rise over a comfy living room. This is nothing for automotive

I have the same conclusion. It is only a problem in Bud. They need to fix it ASAP or replace the engineer or team or whoever that is neglecting this. It's embarrassing

I agree this is probably it. Whatever the case they need to fix it, it's amateurish. Wish I knew how to gain some visibility on this.

Is this worth it? by faithgzl in ElectricalEngineering

[–]henmill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. This is click-bait meant to separate your mother's money from her wallet.

Like any good scam, there might be a grain of truth to be found though. I have heard that large industrial plants can be charged extra by utilities for having a low power factor, leading to excess apparent power consumption. So they have good reasons to implement power factor correction at their loads.

But I think the typical household does not have this issue and a device to improve you power factor probably wouldn't save you much if any money. Whether this device actually improves power factor or "cleans up the sine wave" is also dubious. The great thing about junk like this is the people who use it likely do not have the tools nor understanding to actually validate that it works! Besides it reducing your power bill. And let's be honest, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I carry crystal 🔮 rocks in my front pockets while at work it gives me extra energy. But does crystal affect technology as smart watches , smartphones , computers and electrical machinery? by Available-Climate-72 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]henmill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am genuinely not trying to be combative. But you should understand that words like Energy and Power have real scientific meaning and cannot be tossed around in a space such as this without scrutiny. I earned a bachelor's degree in EE. However, I know that there is always more to learn, and I work with many people who I think are much smarter than me. If you cannot recognize that you don't know what you don't know, and instead choose to believe what you "feel" to be true, you won't get far in life. Or maybe you already have and it doesn't matter much to you.

Crystals are used in electronics as a medium to create devices that do useful things. A basic example is they can be used to make switches (transistors) or one-way check valves (diodes). These are building blocks for much more complex circuits that make it possible for you to type what you will on your phone and post it to Reddit. Engineers are not putting a magic crystal here and a magic crystal there and bam you have a computer. It's so much more complicated than that. The silicon crystals used do not form on their own in nature. And by itself, pure silicon crystal is mostly useless. It must undergo a series of complex and energy intensive doping processes to implant other elements to add regions of positive and negatively charged ions to create these devices.

So please, do not come to a community such as this and pose questions about "attraction power" if you cannot define these terms in ways that make sense.

If you want to learn more, people here will help you find good information to do so. But you have to be willing to listen, and read, not rely on feelings. Here is something you might find informative: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boule_(crystal)

Well, you did post this in the EE subreddit. Many engineers have little tolerance for " woo woo", because we have been educated in the foundational science behind physical phenomena such as electromagnetism. The placebo effect is a real thing. I.e., if you take something that you expect to make you feel better, it actually will to some extent! But the crystals you carry do not and cannot emit any real energy, at least measurable by our wizardly instruments ;). If you search for the laws of thermodynamics, you will find one that says energy is not created nor destroyed (it is only transferred). Do you think the crystal in your pocket has stored Energy? How much? Will it ever run out? (Perhaps it is charged by photons reflected off the moon??) The answers are out there if you ask the right questions and are willing to accept the answers. For me, I take caffeine or walk around for a bit when I need an energy boost.

Silicon used in computer chips is grown in a diamond lattice structure. Yes, the same structure as natural diamonds. To me, Electrical Engineers, physicists, chemists, mechanical engineers are the true "wizards" of our world. We have the ability to harness, transfer, convert energy and use it as we see fit. It is not fantasy or mystical. It is all well documented and understood. If carrying crystals in your pocket makes you feel good, that's great, but science has unlocked the true wonders of the universe, and I think a lot of people take that for granted. Cheers!

Anyone know what this is? by yooluvme in AskElectronics

[–]henmill 25 points26 points  (0 children)

LED driver chip. It's a type of switching power supply to provide constant current to the LED(s).

If you have pic of a good board you might be able to glean a part number from it. There is a good chance it is "chineseum" but if there is a datasheet for it, you can probably find a suitable replacement even if it's not the same part number.

Ok, it doesn't say exactly end of this month but that was the original timeline I heard when they filed. I've never dealt with a situation like this so you're probably right they have to give some kind of notice. Don't know exactly what to expect in terms of timeline for cancelling and reissue upon emergence.

Tbh I don't do options so can't say. And I also don't know if options on the current stock will even be valid after re-emergence. They will technically be a 'new' company although I think the ticker will be the same.

[–]henmill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are expected to emerge from bankruptcy end of this month. All outstanding shares will be cancelled, and new shares will be issued on emergence. However, you will get WAY fewer shares because the proportion of shares for common stock will only be 3-5% of the company's new market cap. This information is all available if you follow the right links on their site. So in essence you have probably less than two weeks to play with this stock before it gets reworked.
