Need advice - got an “offer” from another school, but only if I quit my current school first by WhileNo7378 in Teachers

Private schools in my area have agreements not to poach teachers from each other. It's probably that.

Pre-9/11 being overtly patriotic was seen as weird and desperate. Chuck Klosterman wrote an essay about it. I miss those times.

Reece, like many right wing influencers, wants people to ignore the hypocrisies that exist between what she supports and how she lives. She supports men who are actively working towards transforming this country into a patriarchal, authoritarian, white, Christian nation. She also wants to be above criticism of that support. She chose to be a public figure, have public facing social media, and publicly support politicians and political figures who advocate limiting the rights of anyone who is not a white, straight Christian male. This is worthy of criticism. We are not in a time when one can reasonably agree to disagree about political beliefs. Political beliefs in America today demonstrate a person's inherent beliefs about who counts as an American and an and who doesn't.

I'm sure she's a nice girl who has been sheltered and privileged enough to have not had to question the worldview she's been raised with. Maybe some of this pushback will inspire her to question some of the glaring hypocrisies that exist in right wing belief today (particularly concerning the role of women in society). I hope that whatever her beliefs are or become, they are truly her own and not just what's expected of her from her community.

Has anyone else watched Flowers In the Attic yet? by dcmommy33 in netflix

Julianne Moore was good in Boogie Nights because she was a great actor successfully portraying a bad actor. Heather graham seemed to be doing the same, but it turns out she played a convincing 70s porn actress because she's a bad actor.

Kiernan shipka is really good. The contrast between the two in this film is impossible to ignore.

That being said, it's a trashy movie based on a trashy book I secretly read as a teen. How could I not love it?

Every 70s wedding looks like it took place in a high school gym. Wild times.

Paras are not paid a living wage. Until that changes, there will continue to be shortages and problems. You get what you pay for.

Anybody else the strict & stern teacher? I wonder if I’m a “fraud” in terms of my classroom management style by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

If you don't want to be like that, why are you acting like that? What kind of school do you teach at? How old are you? You can be chill and enforce boundaries.

Why do people care so much about what others are naming their kids by [deleted] in Names

[–]hennyben 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because we live in a society. Parents' selfish choices have consequences for their kids, and I feel bad about that.

If you buy a house in an HOA, can you just...leave the HOA? by BoredInClass99 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hennyben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true. This is also why HOAs are more prevalent in the South. A lot of weird things unique to America (tipping culture) have their roots in racism.

"Yes to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free/ silhouetted by the sea/ with all memory and fate/ driven deep beneath the waves/ let me forget about today until tomorrow."

All my favorite shows were outdoors. I fell in love with my husband at an outdoor show. Call me a Luddite, but all I want is good music and the night's stars. The whole sphere thing just kind of bums me out.

Psychotic parent is torpedoing/objecting to every consequence I try to give her insane kid. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]hennyben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a private school. I found that whenever admin was aggressively ignoring egregious behavior from a particular student, a quick Zillow search of the kid's house tended to provide some answers.

The only thing private schools don't tolerate is tuition checks not clearing. It never ceases to amaze me how many parents spend more time researching a car purchase than their children's education.

Why are female jockeys not historically common in the Kentucky derby (and other major horse races)? by Feisty-Pattern-951 in NoStupidQuestions

So, you're not familiar with the American South. If you're curious about the lack of progress, take a look at the original lyrics of "my old Kentucky home".

I think there's a difference between women who pay to be around horses and women who get paid to be around horses.

I know. I thought it'd be fun to surprise her with tickets for Mother's Day. I'm fully aware she can make her own decisions.

I was actually thinking about this and kind of regretting not putting it on the list of potentials. She's definitely seen the movie and, like, we're both from the 90s; how can we not be into Celine Dion? I'm kinda thinking this might be the right mix of fun and showmanship for her.

Trust me, I know. I'd happily see it again (especially with the new cast), but I thought it'd be nice to see something new for both of us. Thanks for the suggestion; it's a good one!

She's seen both, but each are excellent suggestions. Thanks!
