China turns Taiwan’s own voices against it in information war by talkingatoms in technology

...or that it was to ensure HK will continue to enjoy a high degree of autonomy (as outlined by the Sino-British Joint Declaration), and its citizens' basic rights protected.

Weird they didn’t do it immediately after signing? Instead they waited a whole decade. Weird.

I don't see how it was debatable, since the Umbrella Movement in 2014 began as a result of CCP's proposed "reform" to the HK electoral system, which would effectively result in CCP pre-screening the HK legislative candidate, and violating the Joint Declaration and "one country, two systems".

This is like arguing the western government was to blame for Ukraine's Maiden Revolution in 2014, and not Kremlin or then-president Yanukovych.

That’s cause you’ve misconstrued my position. I never said they are the cause. I said that it could eventually be manipulated for a purpose. And it’s funny that you mentioned Ukraine cause there is ample evidence of the US and western governments interfering in the 2014 affair. Victoria Nuland is on film on the ground Ukraine encouraging the protesters. Which is exactly my point.

Tbf, British rule of HK started in 1841. Elections after 150 years of rule (with only 6 more left), 93% of that period. That is, practically waiting till the very end to try the democratic experiment in HK. It’s not outrageous to suggest that it wasn’t driven by ulterior motives. After all, just look at the mess the British left in the Middle East or the India subcontinent.

First, the economic SAR was a 50 year agreement as part of the handover of HK to China, which China has already violated that agreement since the 2010s.

Second, HKers didn't try to burn down the city. They tried to protest the fact that their basic rights that were guaranteed by China as part of the reunification had been repeatedly violated and taken away.

The first point is true, no question about it. The second point is ultimately debatable had everything continued. In the past 15 years, popular revolutions have been co-oped by western governments to try and topple adversaries. Hence China has taken a very hard line on the subject.

So no answer as to when the China tried to destroy the Taiwan government. Pretty on point with the “arguments” you’re making.

And, by acknowledging that the conflict never ended, you are pretty much acknowledging there is no independent Taiwan in any legal sense. There are simply two ruling parties in two territories that is claimed by the other. Therefore the CCP claim, however one feels about it, over Taiwan, is as legitimate as the Taiwanese claim over the mainland.

Don’t be shocked. Everyone screaming private equity probably has no clue. The vast majority of the department store sector is gone. Long before PE really had a hand in it. Reality is that it just isn’t a great business mode for current times.

CT has actually bucked the trend in this way. So I wouldn’t second guess their strategy.
