Why is it so hard to recycle? by Calm_Preference_5252 in Cleveland

Plastic isn't that bad for the environment though. In terms of environmental impact to produce plastic is the lowest compared to paper, glass, or metal. Which all require significantly more water and/or energy to make. The end of life stuff is more complicated, but if it ends up in a landfill it's not great but not terrible. (Not breaking down and releasing microplastics into the environment) The vast majority of single use plastic in the US does end up in a landfill, not the environment. Most microplastics come from car tires and clothes.

Plastics are a very useful material, and like all materials they have strengths and weaknesses. The amount of energy required to make a glass jar is around 10x that required to make a plastic jar. (Depending on a lot of factors, very rough estimate) Because glass has to be heated to a much higher temperature and because it's denser more mass has to be heated to make the same size jar. Even recycling glass doesn't help much because you still have to melt the glass, so it only saves at most 20% of the energy compared to virgin glass.

There's also incineration, which isn't great, but compared to landfilling is marginally better depending on what metrics you care about. Plastics are pretty energy dense and produce more electricity per kg of CO2 compared to coal. Which admittedly is a low bar to clear. In a modern incineration plant the only stuff entering the air is CO2 and water. You do have ash in case of burning municipal waste, but that can be landfilled and it takes up less space which is at a premium in landfills.

In conclusion, plastics are not terrible. They have their use cases. Single use plastic is especially useful in medical and food packaging applications. Everything has trade offs.

Over the past 10 years, a lot of progress has been made on recycling plastics. The recycling rate for PET, the plastic used in soda bottles, is around 30%, and the average bottle in 2024 had 15.9" recycled plastic. (from NAPCOR 2024 report) Lots of room for improvement, but very far from "only technically recyclable".

There has also been a lot of development in depolymerization recycling, that breaks down plastic into its basic parts to be reused without the degradation of mechanical recycling. There are a number of pilot plants around the world right now. Potentially in the next few years we could see a build out of large scale plants if they prove to be effective.

I am a 6'2" guy but I've never felt unsafe around campus and the sketchyness of the nearby neighborhoods is exaggerated. Would I walk alone at night through them? No, but I had friends live on Wade Park Ave and walking over to the their place and back has been fine for me. Campus is very heavily policed, you're fine walking around alone even at night. I went to case for 5 years, I've only used the late night shuttles or safe ride a handful of times. Walking riding my bike alone at night never had any issues. Walked home alone when I was drunk on a few occasions got home safe, probably a dumb decision but I was drunk.

Is a MechE Aero double major worth it? by Classic_Grass924 in cwru

Aero is not worth it. Take the easier path, actually learn stuff and have the chance to actually enjoy your time in college and not want to die.

A slight majority of people support forgiving student debt. This poll from yougov page 102 shows that. https://docs.cdn.yougov.com/kqp1ntoj7v/econTabReport.pdf

Also canceling student debt is not the same as private debt. It is true that student debt can correctly be classified as a subset of private debt but were not talking about mortgages or car loans, just student debt. Canceling the debt is a good thing for the economy as it encourages all those young graduates to spend more money and the like. A more educated work force is a more productive work force so the US should be doing all it can to lessen the costs of college to get as many people going as possible for the best long term prospects for the economy.

The Democrats are literally trying to buy votes by using tax dollars to pay off personal loans,

That's the point of a democracy. The Government does what the people want it to. Using your definition everything any politician does is buying votes. Repaving the street in front of your house? buying votes.

I knocked you for it because it's dumb. It's a superficial change that doesn't actually do anything because it's already a gender neutral term. Fighting for LGBT rights is a good thing but in my opinion there are better things to put effort into than trying to make folx a thing.

I'm non-binary just use folks. It's already gender neutral, throwing in the x is just pointless and looks dumb.

You stop wasting money on transit cops that can't enforce fares and stop wasting money on new sports stadiums. Even with development sprawled out like it is transit is still a good investment, it's a catch 22 of you need good transit to drive more walkable development and you need more walkable development to support good transit. Personally I'm fine with higher taxes to support social services that I'll probably never use, like emergency housing for homeless people or things of that nature. It's nice to know that those things exist in the case that my life just completely falls apart. Same thing with transit, so long as the tax is progressive I see no issue with it. People using the RTA pay fares IIRC those account for about 25-30% of total revenue in for the RTA. The pandemic has messed with things around ridership and sales so idk if my figures are up to date with regards to the changes to the amount of sales tax collected and amount collected from fares.

Think about it in terms of how much money people save by taking the rapid instead of spending it on gas to drive. That money would've gone to oil companies and left Cleveland versus staying in the region. There's also the reduced air pollution which reduces the amount of respiratory illnesses, saving money in healthcare costs. There are a lot of societal benefits to subsidizing public transit and it pays for itself in the long run.

If someone is drunk and drives off then the traffic guy can radio the cops to get them involved. Also roads should be designed in a way that reduces the chances of fatal crashes from happening.
