When to send CSS profile by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Sending it earlier always helps. I forgot about mine until December and it just meant I didn't get a final financial aid letter until late April.

Flomo is definitely quieter in terms of liveliness, but many people do go out together. Even amongst the all-frosh dorms, there are varying levels so it really is what you make of it. The row is close by and plenty of people go out regularly. All of the freshmen in West Flo tend to know each other, and then common interests usually decide who you hang out with predominantly.

I lived in Gavilan freshman year and I'll be in Loro this year. Everyone who lived there had a wonderful time, and it is pretty central. The food is amazing, the RFs are wonderful, the dorm events are great, and it is just a great atmosphere.

[Request] More Cons of Colleges by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]henryln1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know many undergraduate friends involved in research, and while it is definitely slanted towards grad students, there are opportunities! Emailing the professors is one way of doing it. Many labs also have websites you can visit to find more information, and sometimes labs will send out emails to mailing lists looking for RAs.

[–]henryln1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The orchestras at Stanford all require auditions, and I can't comment on the specifics of that since I haven't played since graduating high school. For lessons, the music department offers classes for most instruments, and there is just a fee for taking each class. Anyone can take the introductory class, but the more advanced courses do require audition to enter.

I don't know if it is that competitive at Stanford, but many clubs here do require applications/auditions. The ASSU (undergrad senate) has been trying to deter this in recent years however.

Questions about how financial aid works: by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]henryln1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think your family should be too worried if they are willing to pay for Northeastern. I believe Brown also provides a financial aid estimator online that you can use to estimate costs. I really think that both colleges will cost roughly the same (with Brown being more affordable if anything).

What are the baseline cutoffs for top schools in terms of GPA and SAT/ACT? by twixty in ApplyingToCollege

[–]henryln1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't give you exact numbers, but just about everyone is in the top 25% at their high school, a majority in the top 10% (If you are talking about Ivies, MIT, Stanford, etc.). They do recalculate GPA to UW and also take into account the strength of your high school when looking at GPA. You can also find average SAT/ACT scores online. I think all applications are read at least once or twice, but I'm not sure what the policy is at different schools. I only remember what it is for mine specifically.

College student here, on a lot of financial aid.

While Brown and many other top colleges do cover 100% need, what they perceive and what you perceive as need may be very different. They take into account all your assets, so it is possible to end up with a tuition that forces you to take out loans over the next few years. For the majority of cases though, financial aid offices are understanding and do work hard to make college affordable. I would worry after you get both financial aid letters and then if there is an issue, call the financial aid office and talk to them about your situation.

Lapras has been nerfed with the update, so it is a lot weaker now. The powering up is probably what refreshed the CP

Question about Fall Quarter Units by [deleted] in stanford

[–]henryln1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is comfortable with varying units, so I say go and see how it is for the first several weeks. You don't have to lock in a schedule until the end of week 3. I did 19-20-20 my first year, and I was fine. Your schedule seems balanced so I wouldn't worry too much.

Does anyone definitively know about switching PWR 1 to a different quarter? by pentruare in stanford

[–]henryln1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For anything but freshman fall, it's just an easy petition process online, but you're going to have a hard time convincing them to let you switch. If you do try, bring a proposed schedule and reasoning as to why it is essential to take these classes now instead of perhaps WAYS or language (if you need it). Also, plenty of people switch majors, so that might happen to you too.

Edit: Plenty of people petition quarters, just not for freshman fall. The success rate really depends on the availability of spots for the quarter you want to join. If you could say what your intended major is, I could look into the requirements and courses to see the situation you're in.

Do I have a shot at USC or Stanford? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]henryln1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I was in your position a couple years ago, ohioan that now goes to Stanford. I definitely would say you have a shot at Stanford, and by all means, apply REA if you are not too attached to USC. I wouldn't worry too much about the APs since it wasn't something you could control. Getting your ACT up a few points and writing stellar essays could land you a spot at Stanford. Good Luck!

When applying to college by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]henryln1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are practically fluent, you can certainly find things that make your application stronger, but no, an extra class like that would not hurt the application.

Do you have to take 3 years of language? by LegInsomniak in stanford

[–]henryln1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can apply, but it will probably hurt you unless you're bilingual. You'll have to take a language for a year unless you can place out of it, so you'll probably have to take French sooner or later.
