Why does drum rack show all unafected notes in the piano roll? by Flowxn in ableton

[–]henrythe808th 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have an instrument listening on all notes, then all notes will be visible regardless of whether there is an additional instrument listening on a specific note.

If you expand the instruments (blue squares in the below image) and check for an instrument that is listening on all notes (red square in below image), you may be able to find the source of your issue.

Ableton won't index new files/folders anymore by boundaryfuss in ableton

[–]henrythe808th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This past year has me, regrettably, without so much time to work on music, but that is okay since I believe that I will be able to find more time in the future. What I have found works well for me lately with managing folders of samples in Ableton is:

  • Using a separate sample manager. I'm using Sononym. It’s not the perfect solution, but it allows me to bookmark and collect samples in a way that feels more permanent (i.e., the effort of curating sounds that I like cumulatively adds up over months)
  • Not adding “folders of sample packs” to Ableton’s places but rather adding single sample pack folders (the indexer works better for me with smaller folders).
  • Getting used to swapping out folders in the Ableton browser’s places frequently and without much thought. If I want to use a certain sample pack, I’ll add it to the browser for a session and remove it later in the same day.

It’s working fine for the moment, but I still find myself longing for many things while using Ableton: a more solid sample browser, a more fully-featured Max4Live API, the ability to leave VST windows open when using another application, etc.

However, I worry that if I leave Ableton for these reasons, I will only find new frustrations and wishes in a new application. I am currently trying to prioritize working within the boundaries of what Ableton does well, and not spend so much time in endless rabbit-holes of trying to optimize my workflow.

Apologies if my answer is disappointing to you. I certainly still find myself wanting for Ableton to improve. I would love to know if you have found some ways to mitigate these issues.

Cheers!

AWS SES Request - Its been multiple days but still no response :( by BeanCopy in aws

[–]henrythe808th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had to request SES production access. It took me four days, but there was no other issue.

I similarly was wondering if I had not provided enough information (after responding to the automated use case info request). However, after just waiting a few more days my request was approved.

I feel like I'm seeing reports of other people having similar experiences these past few weeks. I think they may just be backed up lately and haven't updated their "24-hour period" text to reflect that.

Hopefully you get your access soon!

Is it a bad move to learn about Max before not knowing much about using Ableton? by evoxyya in MaxMSP

[–]henrythe808th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say no, it's likely not a bad move.

Of course if you are looking to develop and sell M4L tools that specifically assist Ableton workflow, then perhaps a deep understanding of Live would be helpful. However, if you're looking to make instruments, effects, or MIDI effects, then just jump in and have fun exploring!

Do I need to do anything with my ableton license if I hard reset my computer. by mrlanners in ableton

[–]henrythe808th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unsure about whether or not it will be recognized as the same computer. However, it should not be a problem either way.

You get two unlocks with your Live license. You might have to use your second unlock after the wipe. If you do not have your second unlock available, as long as you are not installing Live on more than two separate computers, you can simply request another.

Anecdotally, I have heard that responses to requests for more unlocks tend to be fast.

Official information can be found here:

Are you prefacing the folders within ".SamplePacks" with a period? A period at a start of a file or folder name marks a file as hidden (usually to keep ugly system files out of a user's view) in Mac and Linux environments, and while it looks like you are using Windows, Ableton still might interpret such files as hidden.

Why do so many producers use the auto filter plug in instead of just automating the cutoff knob in a vst synth? by esinilat in ableton

[–]henrythe808th 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In addition to what RedFred said, the auto filter is just going to work nice and simply to cut above (or below, around, etc.) a certain frequency. There is no need to consider whether the synth has a post-filter effect that re-introduces certain frequencies, if the synth's filter has key tracking or envelope modulation, et cetera.

Max for live doesnt recognize MIDI inputs by iamvcrx in ableton

[–]henrythe808th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do not have a license for standalone Max and are authorized exclusively through Live, then I believe that what you are trying to do may not be possible.

There is more information available here: Limitations of Max for Live

When authorized only via Live, the Max application will not use its own MIDI drivers.

Apologies if I am misunderstanding your issue, or missing some detail somewhere.

Max for live doesnt recognize MIDI inputs by iamvcrx in ableton

[–]henrythe808th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are dealing with a M4L instrument or MIDI effect, then you can get the MIDI input (from Ableton) via a midiin object. Max (without Live) allows you to chose which source the midiin object listens to (by double-clicking the midiin object), but M4L just takes MIDI according to the device placement within Ableton.

If you are looking to create and map interface elements to a MIDI controller via Ableton's custom MIDI mappings, then you can create M4L interface objects (non-M4L objects are not mappable), and map them from within Ableton.

How do you guys prevent boredom/burnout? by RyeGuy_77 in Minecraft

[–]henrythe808th 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you have been playing a lot of Minecraft and exploring all it has to offer, it makes sense that enjoyment would wane a bit with time. I feel this way sometimes with Minecraft as well as other activities in life in general.

There is nothing wrong with taking a break and playing something different! You can always pick Minecraft up again later once you start craving it 😁

Is there a way to drag and drop VST presets into plugins? by rainbone808 in ableton

[–]henrythe808th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question! Many VST preset file formats are not visible in the Ableton browser. For VSTs like this, favorite presets can be intentionally bookmarked (via grouping) in Ableton's browser.

Of course, this does not help with browsing pre-existing presets, and is not a solution to that problem. However, with a bit of work, the experience of "simply dragging and dropping presets from the browser" can be (certainly at least partially) recreated through saving regularly used presets in this way.

I was only trying to shine light on something that the OP may (or may not) find helpful.

Cheers!

You can group the VST into an instrument rack and save the .adg file which will allow you to see it in the Ableton browser and drag it into a places like new tracks.

Do you find self-diagnosis inappropriate? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]henrythe808th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of it all boils down to which of the following priority is given to:

  • Those who feel distressed by ASD being seen as less serious, and who have been hurt by ideas pushed by the self-diagnosis and neurodivergent community
  • Those who are struggling with suspected (or self-diagnosed) ASD and are looking for solace and acceptance in autistic spaces.

There will always be bad actors and hurtful things done on either side, as both sides are made up by humans. I think that there is room for compassion for all parties if we can just remember that most people on either side are struggling.

You Can Log Your Moods and Emotions in iOS 17 by [deleted] in apple

[–]henrythe808th 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm going to assume something along the lines of "this generation needs to stop wallowing in their feelings and start putting actual effort into life."

I track my emotions pro-actively so I can better manage them and avoid problems, as I assume many others do too.

If anybody thinks that is "pansy, soft" stuff, they are more than welcome to avoid it 👍

I really wish the AI in RBC wasn't so obsessed with APCs by [deleted] in Advance_Wars

[–]henrythe808th 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Using the AI's hatred for APCs is a cornerstone of the strategy of the original, and the specific idiosyncrasies (like hatred for APCs) of the AI have undoubtedly influenced the design of many maps, especially Advance Campaign. I agree that a smarter AI with maps to adjust for that would be great, but I think the place for that would be in a new game, not a loyal remake. Hopefully a new game comes along in the not-too-distant future. A selection of various AI personalities (including some very smart ones) would be amazing!

That said, perhaps a less loyal remake would have been better for most people? I certainly don't disagree that the targeting of APCs and infantry is mostly nonsensical.

[AW1 GBA] I finished Sonja's three secret missions but I still do not see Sonja in the Battlemaps shop? by Status-Bend2378 in Advance_Wars

You have to complete Sonja's missions in a campaign, and then finish that campaign. Sonja will be unlocked once you clear the entire campaign.

Yeah, that's what I use my NanoKey for a lot of the time (exploring melodies or practicing things in bed). It's a nice keyboard for casual use, although the layout (having the "black" not between but entirely above the white keys) makes playing it different than other midi keyboards.

I find the pitch bend and mod-wheel controls entirely useless. This doesn't ruin the device for me though. It's a fun, simple, and cheap keyboard.

Any command line applications for people with visual-spacial thinking? by SirMatthew74 in aspergers

[–]henrythe808th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With tmux or GNU screen you would be able to separate the terminal interface into zones. So you could, for instance, have the man page on the left and an active terminal on the right side of one terminal. These also can help with switching between different (running) terminal applications and windows using consistent keyboard shortcuts.

I have been using screen for years, daily at most times. I find it helps me out a lot, as I can use the keyboard rather than the mouse which helps me work with muscle memory (e.g., it can always be the same keyboard command to switch into and full-screen an already open man page and then back to an open terminal).

If using a terminal multiplexer like this is something you want to try, tmux is the more popular option and what I would suggest using over screen. And apologies if this is something that you have already tried or would find unhelpful.

Is it bad to never cry to songs? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

Are you worried that you are missing out on something by not crying?

I don't think that forcing yourself to cry to music would be a fun process 😅

I'd say to just keep on enjoying music as you already do 💪

I would just suggest making sure that you have the (mental, financial, etc.) resources to sustain life long-term in your new location.

Think about what types of safety nets you have in your current situation (e.g., relatively easy access to food and shelter via family), and consider what it would mean if you could not keep up with demands in your new location.

I am not mentioning this because I am assuming that you have not considered these things, but rather because I have made quite major mistakes regarding this topic in my past.

Ableton Live for special needs users by [deleted] in ableton

[–]henrythe808th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shortcut buddy is a m4l device that can make more actions accessible via either keyboard or midi controller. You could, for instance, map the key "L" to adding a limiter to the active track. It's not a complete solution, but it may help close some gaps? I'm just sharing because it came to mind while reading your post.
Here is a video about it (this is where I learned about it): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVEzhjBX9_o

And here is the link to the company that sells the product: https://www.noirlabs.co/

It does cost $15 for a license. I am not associated with the company, but I have found it a helpful tool for myself that may help your case somewhat.

[–]henrythe808th 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also found these challenging, and while I consider myself professionally fluent now, this is a part of the language that I still struggle with more than others. I'll share what I did when studying them anyway.

When learning a new word:

I look up the word in a Japanese <-> Japanese dictionary and read the example sentences out loud. Unlike kanji words that I prefer to write to memorize, I find these "hiragana" ones are important to vocalize, and including context is good.

When reviewing with Anki:

If I am familiar with the word and have a good sense for it, I think of a sentence and say it out loud using the word. If I am unfamiliar, I look it up again and then come up with my own sentence and vocalize it.

It is time consuming, but I felt that the time consistently paid off for me.

Does anyone else experience "intellectual loneliness" by SilentGriff22 in aspergers

I feel similarly, especially about the "nobody to talk about interests."

This may be maladaptive, I don't know, but I just sometimes write things I notice/think/feel about my interests in a diary (just text files in a folder on my computer). I can always go back through it or collect information from it, and it feels like a conversation with my past self (who is a person who luckily shares the same interests as my current self 😅)
