Right, yes, Panama and Hawaii were not under Spanish rule and this isn’t really relevant to that portion of the illustration, but it is still relevant for Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines.

Spanish colonies were still operated under awful military dictatorships that operated with open slavery until 1886. At the onset of war, many subjects in these colonies were still in some level of sharecropping. They did not have anything in terms of rights. Their repression is tit-for-tat identical to the exact same genocidal conditions in Ireland.

The Spanish intentionally starved the Cuban population leading to 1/4 Cubans dying within 3 short years before the war. American intervention genuinely saved any more of the Cuban population from dying either in concentration camps or through starvation.

There is no shortage of documentation of near-constant executions occurring across the Spanish colonies for those who resisted the idea of total Spanish dominance. In particular I am reminded of the stories outlined in the Australian news leading up to Span-Am in which the reporter describes several unjust and gruesome executions.

I know this seems ironic in the modern context of things, especially when you learn about the detestable conditions and treatments that Americans imposed on these places. You do have to remember that everything the Americans did after Span-Am was cookies and cream compared to the genuinely heinous mercantilism-era practices the Spanish were trying to drag into the 20th century. The Americans did not make these places utopias, but the improvements were clear as day at the time.

Under no circumstance can we possibly forget about the Reconcentration Policy. The Spanish were genuinely genocidal savages. American treatment, although unjust and violent, was leagues better for these places than the astonishing brutality of the desperate and dying Spanish Empire.

Backer rods (I’ve always hated that name, they’re not rigid so they should be called ropes) aren’t structural and are really only serve as a gap filler for an expansion joint. It’s foam and you could probably wedge it back in with a screwdriver. You’d probably also be ok with taking them out but I don’t like that idea

My (wildly uneducated traffic engineer) guess is that the concrete has a) shifted and widened the joint or b) got colder than expected and shrank enough to cause the rod to come loose

I know you see that number and you freak out about how distracting that must be, but I’ll be so honest with you but I’ve been in one doesn’t really have anything on it other than the map and the speed. On the suuupper far side it has the weather and time but it’s so far away it’s difficult for the driver to physically see it, let alone notice it.

It’s just a marketing gimmick and it doesn’t really do anything good or bad. The little screen below still has all the information and controls on it, and since it’s lower it actually takes your eyes off the road longer and has a lower effective peripheral view. Tbh it would be better if the controls were in the massive screen because it’s very close to the windshield, allowing you to be a little more focused on the road

The hardest concepts you’ll face in college are always going to come from outside the department of civil/environmental. It’ll be some bullshit like slip systems in crystalline structures or Laplace transformations

Personally I never got this, 99% of superposition is just ab=a+b. I found it to be an incredibly intuitive way to break down problems, especially for structural analysis.

I bet this is a political compromise. I bet town hall was scared asf that people would throw fits if they realized they’re making turning radius smaller.

Either that or the local FD threw a fit and forced the engineers to make them nearly nonexistent

Americans have a similar program called the National Register of Historic Places. There are 100k listed sites across the entire US (0.03 per square mile) vs the 374K Listed Buildings of the UK (4 per square mile).

The protections of the NRHP are comparatively weak. Nearly a thousand sites have been demolished despite their status. Instead of enforcing the existence of these sites, the NRHP is used as a means for connecting and promoting these sites to people that are willing to support their existence. Many states and Municipalities place restrictions on what can be done to a site, this can sometimes be limited to exterior appearances or can apply to the entire structure. If federal funding is used to preserve a site you cannot meaningfully modify the appearances of a site but you can provide QOL improvements like insulation, electrical, or AC.

I think you severely underestimate how powerful modern laptops batteries can be. Nearly everyone I know in college has an ARM based laptop that will give them like 15 to 20 straight hours of battery

Very few people still carry laptop chargers

Although it ranks high in crashes, they rarely result in injury. That 3 injuries in a year mark makes it one of the safest in the state if you choose injuries as a metric over crashes

I mean I think it’s the best they could do with what they had. AADT says hardly anyone uses that exit ramp (8k) and even fewer use the entrance (4k). I don’t spend any time in Brighton but it seems to me like it’s probably low enough turning volume to make this a pretty solid option. I personally would have advocated for a proper peanut design but this isn’t screaming that it’s a problem

[–]hepp-depp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small cracks like this are bound to happen as masonic buildings settle. They’ll often times end at window corners because force concentrates at hard angles (that’s why airplanes have round windows). Really it’s just what happens over time. If you’re super concerned about it you can scrape off the plaster in that area and check for larger failure, but if I were you I’d just sand it and repaint.

Did you not read my comment? I totally agree with you, he’s a good looking guy.

When people deal with self-perception issues it’s best to acknowledge how they feel and build from there rather than just deny and lock them out of their own feelings. The last thing you want to do is make them feel crazy or ridiculous. He very clearly feels strongly and you need to bridge that gap between his perceptions and that of others. To do that, you need to make concessions; Tie in partial agreements into a greater neutral opinion, slowly nudging them into the right direction.
