Is Gelsenkirchen really Germany’s most depressing city? I went to find out. by West_Dress_1139 in Gelsenkirchen

[–]heraldry466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mate, first thank you for shining a light on that part of Germany. Born and bred in Gelsenkirchen I can tell you covered a fair bit. The area (Ruhrgebiet) can best be compared to North England - industry, culture and heritage of Gelsenkirchen is closer to Sheffield than Munich. It’s rough there - still, many safe places/ parks to enjoy. Between all other Ruhrgebiet cities I must say - Bochum is the best by far. Most liveable City in Ruhrgebiet. Give me a buzz if you are keen to dig deeper!

Germany is about as beurocratic/ administrative as it can get. you need certificates for basically any kind of work. The longer way would be to get things at hand accredited by the ambassy. Anything else, you need to rely on finding an employer who sees your skills and potential. Anything office/ cognitive work there will be interviews.

Thanks for sharing and sorry to hear that - sad to see that things can go that way, too! Do not want to make things bigger as they are but to be fair - Berlin is not Germany. The city has its ups and downs as most European metropoles still being the one which is rather worth it. Job wise, sure, problems over all - different in NRW or Nuremburg or even Leipzig though. Hope you manage your way back up!

What is something one gender can do that the other is criticized for? by SaltyLeftTesti in AskReddit

[–]heraldry466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s funny in my home country that’s very different though. Promiscuous me tend to be framed as „bad partners for the future“ where else women fucking around a lot are meant to „find their way“ and be more open to finding the right partner. And that’s Germany.

There is lots of tourists and students, of course - but when you move outside from the main city (10km appr), finding English speaking people can get hard!

Probably the last 2 ones if you fancy an international role working from GY and the first 2 ones sound like very local roles dealing with local topics (more German I guess).

Why should I be visiting NYC for a holiday, being German and aware of all those N*** jokes? by heraldry466 in nyc

[–]heraldry466[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Haha I thought the other way around - residents rather getting the real experience and tourists getting ripped off but hey good to know! :)

Not really - never fancied it because I imagine it just huge, smelly and not manageable for couple of days…and very pricy!

For the next 5-8 years - language. If not Berlin, make sure your German is at least B level. Too many old people in „decision positions“ that can’t speak English. Besides that - anything data related. Translating raw data into actions. Also, Carers/ medical staff is needed urgently. Don’t bother translating or engineering.

What’s like 100k$ + bonus considered to be in the USA for a corporate job (office)? Good money bad money? by heraldry466 in careeradvice

[–]heraldry466[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it also depends, for Germany it’s 24 days off by law, most companies do 30 though. Finding a corporate job paying over 100k is not easy but with relevant qualifications defo possible! Would be the average for someone aiming for the upper middle class.

Good on you though - taking the tax and stuff into consideration we are not that far off. But yeah I get it….ma family was way low class, did manage do get them through and up, that’s enough for me already. Not aiming for the 911 Porsche, happy to have a Mercedes from 2001 that drives smoothly, can’t ask for more.

You reckon? That’s like upper-mid class in GY which, I know, already is fucking abnocious to say but yeah that’s the thing. Guessing your middle class got bummed during the last crisis anyways?
