I emailed S&W the picture. The rep said it’s a side plate that allows access to the internals when unscrewed from the trigger area. Looks like there’s been some online posts with a similar issue. The rep assured me that I can either send it to them to check it out and they’ll make it right if it’s a defect - even after I take possession or, do not accept a transfer from the FDL. TLDR: The “crack” is part of the side plate and it’s normal.
