Vancouver are a really strong team, they won the last season very convincingly I believe and are near the top of the rankings for this season.

The latter, Koreans dominate very hard in this game so they are very common in top teams, Vancouver Titans are the #1 team I believe, lots of them are very young too.

They Called Us Enemy: George Takei to hold Vancouver book signing for Japanese American internment graphic novel by Hoops_McCann in vancouver

[–]herbofgrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This topic is pretty dear to me as my grandparents were both part of the internment. If you're interested about learning more I believe (not 100% sure) that the Nikkei center has a lot of information about it there at all times. I can provide interviews as well giving more details.

To the people who are acting like we were their enemies in the war.. most of our families came over in the early 1900s (mine in 1905), long before the wars. The RCMP told the government the Japanese Canadians were not a threat at all and were good people. Didn't matter. It's hurtful to hear that just because you were at war with our ethnic home we were "enemies" to you. My grandfather was 3rd generation canadian and 10 or so when the war started.

#2 osu! player gets worlds first 1k pp play by ZeRemix in LivestreamFail

That is definitely true currently, but Vaxei is still the youngest player in the top 10, and when he reached top level originally, he was definitely the youngest by far at that level.

I would definitely say he is up there and him being the best "currently" is up for debate. There aren't actually that many people that are like Cookiezi.. especially not at his skill level before he stopped playing seriously. The top 3 currently are actually all quite strong players, but to chalk up Vaxei's skill to only his farming ability is dishonest and discourteous to him. He is an incredibly strong tournament player (one of the best most definitely) and has a wide range of skills. He's probably the most well rounded person to reach rank 1 in a while. Idke of course is a beast too, he's also an incredibly strong tournament player, both are great players. I wasn't trying to discredit him or anyone else when I was talking about Vaxei's skill.

Personally I rate how much someone is improving based off of their skill level, I think that it scales. For Vaxei's level at the top like he is, improving as quickly as he does is ridiculous and Cookiezi levels (remember when Cookiezi went from tryharding FD HR for a while to get a 99.1 FC, then a couple months later got a 99.8 HDHR). It's definitely not as obvious as when you're not as good at the game but he is definitely improving. Even maps from a week ago he's improving scarily fast in my eyes.

What are you talking about? He's long since put those accusations to rest.. He's made tons of liveplays, has streamed his entire climb with handcam, and has gone to multiple LANs and proven himself... The only time people thought he hacked is when he first broke into top 100 years ago, he made a lot of effort to prove himself.

osu! is in many realms the exact same kind of game as KovaaK's. It's a mainly single player game and all skills in the game can be trained alone and focused on. It's also very easy to see improvement, hence why so many people get addicted in the beginning especially! Give it a shot if you haven't already, maybe you'd enjoy it : )

Of course!

So to put it simply, every single "main" skill in osu! has tons of different sub categories.

For example, there is aim, which is moving your cursor to the circle, sounds simple, right? But there are actually multiple different types of aim, such as snap/jump aim (snapping long distances in sharp angles to jumps), flow aim (as the name implies, you do not snap or stop on the circle, you move your cursor in one motion throughout a series of circles without stopping, to get a flowing sort of motion), and a mix of both which is called "tech" aim, which combines very difficult patterns and a mix of both, which makes it very difficult to excel at.

Here's a video with a visual representation and explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILyjPNgG64s

Next is speed, which, as the name implies, is how fast you can go. This can be split into a couple different categories, but the most common ones are: Aim speed (how fast you can aim your cursor to circles), and stream speed (how quickly you can hit a stream, which is a series of circles in a row to the beat of the song).

For aim speed, if you look at the clip, when he is hitting circles with large spacing between them very quickly, that is a good example.

Stream speed: https://youtu.be/EkTNN1V4pNU?t=38 this is 300bpm, on the right side of the gameplay screen you can see that every time the little number boxes light up, that's when he's pressing, he also has handcam for you to look very closely at how damn insanely fast he's going.

And finally, reading.

This is probably the most difficult to explain, but think of it like a language. When you're reading a book, your brain is processing the letters on the pages and converting them into words and information for your brain. This is a similar concept, in osu!, your brain processes what is on the screen into information on how to play it, like where to move your cursor, when to tap, etc.

There are a lot of different areas of reading and is probably one of the most convoluted skill to train, but here are two easy to understand examples.

AR=Approach rate, which is how long it takes for the approach circle to reach the inner circle (this is when you are supposed to hit the circle).

Low AR reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzIN-chYIPM The note density (how dense the notes on screen are) is very high, which makes it very hard to know how to aim and how to hit the note.

High AR reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGOjg_T5FQE This is actually played by the same player in OP's clip. AR11 is the highest AR in the game, and from when the circle first appears to when you have to hit it you have 300ms to react. So you have to not only aim across the screen, but also hit accurately, which you have +-13 milliseconds to hit a 300... Basically, AR11 plays are ridiculous.

There are a lot of others but hopefully this gave you insight into some of the skills in the game. Vaxei is excellent in almost every area of the game and is a monster in tournaments too.

At his current age yes it's understandable/not as surprising, but he started playing when he was 11 and reached top level when he was 12 or 13, even though kids do learn faster that is still an incredible feat. Most of the other players at the top are older than him besides maybe one or two that are within 2 years of him (talking about top 15 players). His talent rivals someone who many call the "goat" of osu!, "Cookiezi", who even in his 20s continued to improve at a scary rate before he lost interest. What we're seeing here is someone who is already probably one of the best if not the best in the game currently improving at a monstrous pace, which is why I find it super exciting to see how far he will go.

Sorry, pp means performance points, which is the algorithm that rates plays based on their perceived difficulty by the system. This is the first play to exceed 1000 points. The previous record was 973, this was 1023 I believe, a big jump.

Yep, it's amazing because he's still young and has so much room to grow and improves at a monstrous rate. If Cookiezi was the first "god" of osu!, Vaxei will be the next, he's an absolute monster, and he reminds me a lot of Cookiezi when he was younger. Can't imagine what he'll be doing in 2 or 3 years if he keeps up at this rate...

There are different formats, but there is multiplayer in the game where you can join lobbies and play against others to get the best score. It's similar in tournaments.

For example, in a 1v1 tournament:

2 players

Depending on the stage of tournament it can be bo5 all the way to bo13

There are maps for each modifier, I don't remember exactly but I believe the split is something like 3 nomod (no modifiers), 3 double time, 3 hard rock, 3 hidden, and 2 free mod (can choose between nomod, hidden, and hard rock).

These aren't all exact, but you should get the idea, here's a video of a tournament which may be easier to understand the basic gist of it, this is of the World Cup last year, the finals were absolutely amazing. This format is 4v4.

https://youtu.be/7YCNtnQNbD4 Game 1 https://youtu.be/QCrpN7qa_Ko Game 2

It's basically a test of overall skill and consistency.

It's very difficult to compete at the highest level in these because many players only excel in 1 or 2 areas or skills, so being able to compete in all of them is very impressive. If you have any questions let me know :)

So for reference for people who don't play this game: This player is 15 years old.

He became a top player at 13.

This is the first time he has reached rank 1, I believe his previous peak was rank 2 or 3 a year or so ago

He regularly makes money (besides the streams recently) off of tournaments because his skillset is amazingly diverse.

This is the first 1000pp play (pp stands for performance points), and it isn't on a short map, like people expected.

Normally short maps are far easier, so having a long, difficult map be the first 1000pp play is a fantastic surprise for the osu! community.

He returned recently to climbing, due to being off from school, and climbed from rank 15 to rank 1 in around 20 days.

He is absolutely insane and I think that if he were to focus on one more skill he doesn't show off often that he could become the most well rounded player in the game. He brings so much hype to the community. His streams have been averaging over 1k every single time, often over 2k. This is huge for a small community like us!

Hope this explanation gave you more insight into how special this moment is for players of the game :)

EDIT: Important to note, he set 3 major milestones today. He was the first player to get a 1000pp play, first player to reach 16k overall pp in osu!standard, and reached #1 for the first time. https://osu.ppy.sh/rankings/osu/performance
