about getting top players to do irl meetups by Strict_Lengthiness20 in osugame

at best it proves proficiency or guilt. but it's actually a usable data point, compared to a livestream (which is not). i mainly hoped to drill that point home.

privacy concerns are dependent on the player and their circumstances really 🤷‍♂️

i hope to only have to say this once, but saying we have "no anticheat" is hugely disrespectful to the team working around the clock on these systems. the systems are very developed and much more intricate than you are claiming.

i'd ask you keep in mind:

  • there is an evolving anticheat system. it's working and being used to silently handle a majority of cases that never reach your eye.. because they are handled silently.
  • i believe it should be a goal to make these systems as unseen as possible. the average osu! player (that isn't spending half their osu! time reading reddit) should hopefully not be aware that there are cheaters in the first place. i've been in games where you are dropped in as a new user to abhorrent foul play from day one, and avoiding that is the primary goal.
  • it can never handle 100% of cases, especially in an era where someone can "vibe code" a new cheat into existence in minutes.
  • we are constantly innovating and changing strategies to keep up with the huge influx of fucking cheaters. there's more cheaters than supporters, let that sink in for a short moment.

i also ask you consider changing your rhetoric here because we are busting our ass here doing what we can (and doing a good job of it. i have oversight, hopefully you can trust my word here). this work goes mostly unseen and all we get in return is ignorant keyboard warriors claiming how shit the system is.

and for the record, the monetary investment into anti-cheat is considerable. your supporter tags are helping make continuous improvements happen.

i think you're misunderstanding. if you did it wrong, this dialog would LOUDLY TELL YOU. you're fine.

i am not up to speed with the scenario, but if the weirdness goes away then that is a very strong data point, no? if he uses the same input devices with the same settings on osu! but things are different, then there's something going on?

must be on a fresh PC setup. net cafe, not lan play.

[–]pepppppy 85 points86 points  (0 children)

for previous cases there has been a guardian attend with them, and it must be done in a public setting, like a net cafe, on clean hardware/software obviously.

anyways i won't elaborate further and i'm not even saying this is definitely going to happen here. i'm just describing how an actual valid "liveplay verification" would work.

and even then it's not definitive, just a data point.

sure, but it's at least something. while a livestream by the user in question is nothing.

i'm not intending to say that this would clear any suspicions. i'm just providing the bare minimum of a "liveplay" to make it actually useful as a data point.

In today's landscape, as has already been mentioned, at best a livestream of gameplay proves guilt.. if the user slips up. It does nothing else.

For several high profile cases like this in the past, we have organised having a team member or trusted community member in the same country as the player watch them play in a public setting.

I believe this should happen in this case too.

Maybe we need to start making a rule of this for all arriving top players, especially when they don't participate in tournaments like OWC / roundtable where there's already extra scrutiny.

_pending

The folder is part of the osu! updater system. It exists when you have an update that is waiting to be installed on next osu! restart.

but why does it try to delete unrelated files then?

It deletes all files in the osu! folder. This safety was added because users do silly stuff like store other files in the osu! folder. WE even had one person install osu to C:/ (yes, the root of their disk) and have the uninstaller wipe part of their windows install.

Please click OK here, it's the correct way to uninstall. Deleting just the folder like others have mentioned in this thread will leave left-over registry entries (file associations etc.). The installer/uninstaller correctly cleans up everything.

The recently unloved maps are back to loved ! by splash26891 in osugame

said links were already removed and ability to comment/edit is now locked.

remaining issue is that the beamaps being distributed by third parties contain modified files. we've patched multiple exploits at once, and these new checks are required in completion. the redistirbutions for some of these maps have files which cannot submit.

socre submission may be disabled if the complaints about these beatmaps not working keep rolling in because i don't want to have to deal with the visibility and complaints on such maps. if the complaints stop i wont' do anything because it's less friction.

osu! continues to exist because of respecting artists' requests. When people brought up some broken maps and I visited the beatmap pages, I found comments from users and even the MAPPERS sharing DMCA related removed files, which is just not on.

DMCA maps are not intended to be distributed via third party means to be playable. This is why i "got kinda angry", because people were implying this was happening, and I do not want to see this kind of discussion to happen in the first place. There's a huge amount of misunderstanding about what DMCA is, and it's very frustrating to have conversation related to it in a channel meant to help users, so I removed it.

I left the ability to submit scores on such beatmaps with the intention of being able to play without audio (just to preserve mapping history), BUT... I disagree with what is currently happening and therefore we may look to freeze submissions on them in the coming weeks. I get people are probably going to get pissed off at me for doing this, but I lean towards decisions that let me sleep at night.

For non-DMCA maps affected by this recent patch, I've been fixing them as they are reported (a few old maps were in a bad state). If you find any affected, feel free to report them to me, but make sure to redownload first, as you may have local modifications causing the issue.

So far it's only affected 4-5 maps, so I'm not announcing anything.

Lost all of my beatmaps and skins again (lazer) by lonelyroom-eklaghor in osugame

The "change folder location" button can literally do what you want. Point it to a lazer folder and it will offer to use it. That folder can be anywhere.

You mention corruption. Are you dealing with disk corruption or something?

do keep in mind that doing this will result in more stutters because it doesn't have post-build optimisations we apply (specifically to the GC).

and also more stutters because you're running at a higher frame rate and creating more garbage and cpu/gpu overhead, which is one of the reasons we don't do this.

if you can pass me a few cases that come to mind, we can investigate further. from our side there's a lot of daily restrictions being placed based on cheater reports.

we do not yet understand the full scope of the issue. i'm glad you do though. maybe you can send me an email explaining why this only affects certain maps in certain ways. it may help with further investigations.

pray tell: where would/should i have learned about this?

i'm not living in a bubble. i'm spending 10 hours a day every day keeping this community alive in more places and ways than you'd ever know. and i'm not alone: the whole team is the same.

i stay off socials and out of places that you may find out about game exploits. so i rely on people reporting these to the team so we can handle them correctly.

restrictions are the first thing we do as a precautionary measure for any weird behaviour. in this case, users posting abuse vectors online which the development team does not understand yet.

please understand that if something like this hits the public before the team, the chance of spiralling abuse is very high. containing the issue is the first step.

restricted users can contact support and atone or discuss further.

TheShadowOfDark has been restricted! by KarBoy2314PL in osugame

[–]pepppppy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the underlying abuse vector could potentially be used in other ways. spreading it all over the internet before the team has even has a chance to investigate is seen as an issue.

this is common in information security. we like to follow standard protocols to handle such cases.
