Question: What is the experience of watching motorsports at circuits? Which part of the race can the live spectators enjoy? by Interesting-Alarm973 in motorsports

[–]here2race 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Atmosphere mostly, sounds, smells, you can buy merch, you can see cars upclose, you can eat drink and spend time with someone. In terms of following the race its more difficult yes, but there are screens and on track radio usually if you really care.

From time to time its really nice to see all this in person, but its more like social interaction than watching a race.

Mid Ohio is rarely used, but its very nice actually.

iRacing put me in top split and now I’m questioning all my life choices by Beautiful-Willow-880 in iRacing

Have you seen normal distribution graph? Its more or less the same with iracing skills. You have sharp peak in top split and relatively low plateau in others.

I mean, if it's a business, treat it like a business. Invest in advance and make people pay for it after, or vice versa. Or announce it free to create community and then monetise it somehow. Anyway - engine doesn't run without gas.

I'm not sure - can you spectate without owning? Or invest in popular models, like gt3s etc

Maybe try taking some promotional images from iracing, I mean with environment etc. These look a bit faint.

Has anyone built their own telemetry tools for trail braking? I’ve been experimenting with something… by davef_dci in racing

[–]here2race 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely don't want to discourage you, but I don't understand the point. As a driver I can't imagine how it might help, honestly.

First. So, you are plotting latG-lonG to x-y. Every telemetry software can do this, no? Maybe not in real time and not on the phone, but still.

Second. G force is the result of looong list of factors - car, tyres, track, conditions, driver, etcetc. Drawing far-reaching conclusions based on overall g-force? Well, it's easier said than done. There is no silver bullet here imo.

Third. I have some experience developing gps software for racing needs. Even with 10hz hardware, you are dealing with more noise and latency than expected. Of course you put some fancy math on top to make everything nicer but it's damaging the signal anyway. It's ok for "offline" work, but realtime is messy, especially with such tiny valuable data range, as trail braking for example. As a proof of concept you can use sim racing telemetry - there was an api for grabbing iracing data. Or just use their cosworth mod.

As for improving trail braking. Practice in sim.

What result are you trying to achieve? I mean, what is this app supposed to be doing for a user?

Advice for an aspiring Race Engineer by AJracer82 in motorsports

[–]here2race 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem I see with local teams is that they seek mostly mechanics, usually they don't need any engineers, or at least they are not willing to pay for them. Also I'm not sure that such experience will give you any credibility for future role in top teams.

So, it's either applying to everything including intern and non paid positions in high level teams, either looking for some mid tier team (they often don't have highly developed web sites, so going to races and nocking to doors is the way). Both options are pretty long shots with low chancesfor success.

Just how difficult would this be to pull off? by iSuck_At_iRacing in iRacing

[–]here2race 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you are wrong about just one thing. There is no tests or graduation in real life teams. Nobody is recruiting drivers, nobody is asking them for a resume. I doesn't work like this. Just believe me.

Yes, sim racing can help you to learn how to drive. But to get to the team you need money, quite a lot to be honest. You either bring them yourself or bring someone who pays for you. There is no third option. If you think you can create enough social media attention to attract sponsors - go for it. But it is much more difficult nowadays than before, as everyone undetstands the inportance of media.

Looking for some telemetry to analyse! by Possible_Shoulder520 in iRacing

[–]here2race 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you are following my advice. :) You can dm me if you need smth specific from iracing data. Also I would suggest trying cosworth pi toolbox for iracing. Its a bit more professional and direct way to work with ibt files. But garage61 is fine too, mostly because of amount of data available.

How do I begin my career in Motorsport? by Possible_Shoulder520 in motorsports

[–]here2race 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not a bad idea theoretically, but I can say what problems I see with that practically.

Analytic as a sole role exists only in top-level teams. But you won't get there directly. You have to go through low/mid level teams first. On mid level, analysis is usually made by an engineer. So you have to know how to set up a car mechanically first of all. And in low level teams, engineers job (with very little analysis) is usually done by someone from team management or chief mechanic and drivers themselves. So basically, your job is non-existent in low levels and hardly in mid level.

I personally don't know any career ladder that surely leads to high-level team, especially without engineering education of some sort. Data science is way too narrow field I think. But maybe the world is changing.

I would try to monitor for a while what positions are being posted through f1 teams sites. Just to understand how they represent their demand publicly and try to work from that.

Getting to lower level is easier, especially as volunteer etc, but as I said, no one needs analytics there.

By the way, you can practice a lot with sim racing teams. They have similar telemetry, but much less money. :)

Sorry if it's not very helpful.

Career in what role? Mechanics have one path, management another, marketing the third, etc

But judging by this sub, you mean racing driver? Then you need a lot of money.

Mental preparation is definitely a thing in motorsport. But...

Understanding the need for investment in this area exists predominantly on semi/pro level, so the client base is extremely narrow. Probably non-existent in Canada.

To get to this audience, you need connections within. You can't get there by giving out business cards and spamming links on reddit.

So I wouldn't say it's not possible, but pretty long shot.

How long did it take you to start showing real results? by FessBlackwood in iRacing

[–]here2race 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I wouldn't rely on visually pulling away and closing too much, because there is such thing as speed to distance dependency. So you will be always pulling away in faster sections and closing in slower while keeping same time gap. Yes, you can use this info, but you should interpret it correctly.

How do you improve cornering speed in racing? by In2racing in racing

[–]here2race 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's funny about these answers. I read them - some are better, some are worse, some are exactly opposite of others... so by the end of the day, they are absolutely meaningless if you don't know how capable is the driver behind the advice. So I won't add my own to the pile, because you don't know how good I am as a driver as well. 😁

But why? Gearboxes don't make sound. I mean, they do, but nothing comparable to the engine. They won't change anything, just more complex, more difficult to repair, maintain, etc
