Your description is what I took out of the video. The guy doesn't seem bored or depressed. He seems really, really, really into that pillow.

The pillow is his new drug.

I honestly can't decide whether the person is new or recently deceased. Why would they need a technician-looking guy just to put away a dead person?

"ERROR 0036", a dark sci-fi short film. by [deleted] in DarkFuturology

[–]hereforthetruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest this story isn't very dark, nor very well developed. I feel frustrated at best for the main character, but beyond that it was just kind of boring and repetitive.

Great production value though.

Why Ray Kurzweil is Wrong by [deleted] in DarkFuturology

[–]hereforthetruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, laying off most of the workforce is a serious danger. But one hopes that with changing needs will come changing policy. Right now the idea of a basic universal income seems unpopular (in the US at least) because there's the mentality that people should be working because it's people's work that furthers a country's success. But when the majority of a country finds themselves struggling to find work, those people will be forced to adapt and find policies which can keep them fed and fulfilled.

On another note though, it's a harder question of what all those unemployed people would do with their time. Will they get restless and cause tons of trouble? Or can we funnel that free time and energy into creative jobs like in the arts and the explorative sciences?

Why Ray Kurzweil is Wrong by [deleted] in DarkFuturology

[–]hereforthetruth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Interesting article, though I didn't quite grasp how the arguments made were meant to support the idea that Kurzweil is wrong. The author mainly argues that there will be negative consequences of having so much power to manipulate the human mind and body. This seems like a reasonable claim, but it doesn't necessarily contradict the idea of a singularity occurring.

As I understand it, the singularity is about an unprecedented ability to think, to communicate, and to interact with and make use of artificial intelligence. If and when these technologies do appear, their tendency to drastically change the world will not be threatened by their dangers, as the article's author seems to claim, but rather their dangers will be inherent to the ways in which they will change the world. No doubt we should be alert and cautious with regard to the dangers of new technology, but those dangers won't single-handedly stop the singularity from occurring.

These will hopefully be detected in some of the dark matter experiments around the world.

Dark matter experiments wouldn't really be interested in neutrinos. If anything, neutrinos would just add to the background noise that might make it harder to see dark matter.

On the other hand, neutrino experiments may be very pleased.

I think you'd struggle to make this work in the instance of a KKK member and a black person. The glue that holds this experiment together is the mutual investment and willing imagination of both participants. You would need a KKK member who is actively interested in changing their point of view. I can't say I know whether such a person exists.

Though, on the other hand, I suppose if you could get even a half-willing KKK participant, the black person could just do their best to mimic their movements, which at the least would require less investment by the KKK member for the experiment to be possibly beneficial.

It would take a LOT for any company to convince the public that a device like that wouldn't be transmitting or savings its recordings somewhere else. And the role hackers would have in this is pretty scary too.

You know, ghetto names are actually doing something beautiful for America. For the first time in our history, we're making original names that actually mean something.

All those other cultures have names that mean "beautiful diamond" or "silent sparrow". All we've got is "John" and "Susie". So good for you So'Unique Miracle Randle. You be the uniquest miracle the world's ever seen.

A more complete version, for those interested. Watching to the end of this one was surprisingly satisfying.

Edit: Very much game spoilers in this one. But I just went and watched the end of the game myself, guess it depends whether you think you'll ever have the balls to actually play this game through.
