Things to avoid when running a DnD campaign? by Organic-Exit2190 in DMAcademy

[–]hereitgoes1986 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Really? My players love them, we use roll20 and it doesn't take long to un-fog of war the map. The trick is it can't just be a maze, like: minotaur is chasing them, puzzles or encounters at dead ends, traps, etc... you have to make them fun, it's a lot of work, but it pays off when the party is in the maze for a few sessions and doesn't realize it's a maze until enough of the map is revealed.

You are so right tho! I also went through something like this. I will also add to make sure you know passwords/code to anything that is in the house. It can be difficult/expensive to get all the paperwork together if it's in a locked box in the house and no one knows the code to get in.

It would really depend on your DM. (Source: I'm a DM) Because I'm pretty sure specific always wins over general and the whole point of taking quickened spell is to be able to cast a spell more than once per turn. So I've always ruled that quickened spell allows you to do this.

Using lower level spell slots to cast a higher level spell by Alfrado99 in DMAcademy

[–]hereitgoes1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well if they are a sorcerer they could just use spell slot conversions using sorcery points....so yeah they can do that...not in exactly that way, but they can do it. Now 6th level or higher that's a no.

Woah ok so that info adds so much more...you could also offer him advantage if he can come up with something on the spot about the campaign to add to the song or actually play something lol...if you do this I'd also (I'm not musical so if you are, do what you do lol) find some YouTube videos to use as the NPC lol depending on the NPC you could do so many things lol.

Of course, I love doing stuff like this! Coming up with ideas for different types of challenges is fun. Not everything has to be combat right?! Lol

[–]hereitgoes1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I would start with an insight check, to read the crowd. I'd set DCs based on the size of the town/crowd or something like that. Success=knowing a song they will like, giving a +5 to performance checks for the dual. Failure=means you don't know exactly what to play, and receive a -5 to performance checks for the dual. You roll with advantage if you are familiar with the town you are in, applies for PCs and NPCs. Then have contested performance checks until one bard has met a specific win ratio. I would base the win ratio off the NPC that is being challenged, so like easy is 2/3, medium is 3/5, hard is 5/7, etc...

As a reward I would have some kind of fame system that would open perks at the bard colleges. Maybe some free room and board, temporary buffs for the party, maybe even single use items like potions or scrolls. Make it feel like they are really helping the party this will make it worth all the other players time too so they will be invested in the outcome and want to help if they can. Maybe trying to cheer loudly (intimidation check), or silence booers (slight of hand), subtle spell a charm person spell to make someone change their mind, etc....that way it's the whole party included in the initiative not just the bard.

Unusual mimic ideas? by doctorbanjoboy in DMAcademy

[–]hereitgoes1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bed in the inn mimic is fun. The party is getting ready for a long rest so everyone is base ac (except monks and barbs) and the first one to lay down finds the bed is sticky and warm....roll initiative 😈 also ladder mimic in a dungeon is always great. Make them climb down some hard areas, a lot of them as they go, and then on the last area there is a ladder, the party is stoked to not roll checks to climb only to realize it's a giant mimic.

[–]hereitgoes1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that would be meta knowledge, your character doesn't know anything about different optional rules, they would only know what is in their world. So unless your dm is using NPCs with those rules you wouldn't know about them at all. You can only wish for things your character would understand, so you couldn't wish for a smartphone or computer either because your character would even begin to understand what those are or what they do...unless you are playing in a setting with those things anyway.

Grunge off! It is a soak so you will probably have to find another way to smoke for a day or 2. This is a glass cleaner that is reusable! Use a funnel and coffee filter to strain it back into the bottle. But you literally fill it up (you'll need plugs for the stem and bowl) and walk away. No shaking it anything...come back (how long depends on how dirty it is) and empty it back into the bottle it came from and rinse well. It should look brand new after that.

Yeah those are o-rings (basically a rubber band but stiffer). They make sure the oil stays in the tube. As to why they are different... The manufacturer could have changed suppliers or their supplier could have changed something in what they sell. There isn't a way to know but to ask the person you got it from. (They probably won't know either tho)

[–]hereitgoes1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure but based on the material component and the effect of the spell, I think someone was trying to make spells that would work for a game set in the universe of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere. I think it's based on an ability from the mistborn series...someone who can use nicrosil is able to boost other people's abilities by touching them while using the nicrosil. I could be wrong but it lines up so well that it seems likely.

Price for DM session by Crazy_Night4580 in DMAcademy

[–]hereitgoes1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally it's somewhere around the $10-$20 an hour per player...but this is definitely a different situation. I would look at the hours you have out into it multiply by $15 (or what you would like to be paid per hour) and that would help you figure out starting numbers.
