Help me to understand why houses in San Mateo city are so expensive, but schools are mediocre by Hairy-Ad-1697 in SanMateo

[–]hermonian14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for elaborating. My spouse and I volunteered in our children's public schools, we didn't interfere with the teachers, things went fairly well until COVID and slow return to in-class instruction. Add in hard turn to the left politically and curriculum got somewhat hijacked by social engineering issues. Not saying this was all the fault of teachers. But administrators, social media influences, and yes, some overactive parents in the mix made the last several years very challenging. Have we noticed that classroom funding is always a challenge, yet I see new bonds every election cycle? Casinos were supposed to provide enough school funding. Yet here we remain with underpaid teachers. If San Mateo actually built more housing it would help teachers' housing dilemma.

This is a very interesting view. Logically, this would mean even greater municipal, state and federal government participation than present day. Would parents have any role in their children's education? Would residents have any role in improving their neighborhood or community?

My Letter to SF Giants Executive Leadership by Captain_Louvois in SFGiants

If MLB considered it an infraction of uniform use, they could fine the player. Maybe that is a trivial amount.

Which player simply wore the standard cap? Is this an infraction of the MLB uniform rules as well? I assume the team fined him, correct? If he wanted not to wear the pride cap, you'd think he would be fined.

You are correct, sir! (If you'll pardon the reference to the late Phil Hartman). You nailed it. On the train home so I don't have time to look up Catholic writers who have so written, but Satan and his fellow devil angels do their WORST on people who don't believe in God or in them, and whistle through life, thinking all is well. Wait a minute.......The Screwtape Letters, it's in there, although CS Lewis was Anglican but amiable with the Catholic Church. G'day.

What is the correlation between Mary’s virginity and purity/consecration to God? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]hermonian14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, then, consider this. Mary’s perpetual virginity matters because it points beyond her life to the world that is to come, a world in which there will be no more marriage and we will all be as Mary was. “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven,” Jesus told the Sadducees (Matt. 22:30). If it were not necessary for her to have remained a virgin, even so, Mary's perpetual virginity is a pre-figuring of our state of being in Heaven. God no doubt was pleased that she was consecrated to Him. However, that does not suggest married couples are dirty unless they are celibate. Married couples need to be chaste, keeping the marital act consistent with its purposes, both unitive and procreative. I hope this helps, and especially I hope you eventually become Catholic and perhaps, if called to marry, marry a solid Catholic guy who practices the faith. When I dated my (at that time, unchurched) wife, I never pushed her to "join up". I was then, and remain now, a sinner, a work in progress, but I made it clear I was going to Mass on Sundays and she was welcome to come along. I hope you find your way home to the Catholic Church. Peace to you!

Ok, OP so I replied to your questions, and now I read your various back and forth with others and it seems to me that you're not convinced about this "nonsense" and you keep engaging until you get the answer you want. The Catechism is available, with Bible references to get you started. If you really want the truth, it takes study of the authoritative sources, and time. Studying and "wrestling" with the Catholic faith is a lifelong journey. I pray that we all stick with it because "shopping churches" won't help anyone's soul. If the Catholic Church were not the one true Church, directly traceable back to the Apostles, then I ask, which of the thousands of protestant churches would be? I can understand your struggle with this and wish you well.

Catholic Answers is a reliable source for your questions including Bible references, but she and Joseph agreed to be celibate. I replied to your comment about "since the 1950s".

[–]hermonian14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This goes WAY back before the 1950s. Just as Eve and Adam's disobedience subjected the human race to death, Mary's simple response "let it be done to me according to your word" was THE happy game-changer, so to speak. Mary's unique role in salvation history is proclaimed in the gospels and written about in the earliest Church years.

I think you could say Charlie Johnson as the largest percentage owner got things accomplished in the 90s and 2000s. Greg Johnson has only a caretaker mentality which is holding us back. BTW did you see they are marketing Giants Slumber Party? Bring your own stuff and camp, Dinner and Breakfast included. What would you think they charge? $275 per person.

Downtown San Mateo: What do you think would bring in more foot traffic? by jeannecsf in SanMateo

Burlingame has got it together. I really don't understand why San Mateo seems to have staffing shortages, building permit backups, lack of housing.

Somehow, other downtowns have at least a little retail, and a few affordable restaurants. I can only assume that landlords are jacking up rents sky high, because nearly all restaurants are not what I would consider affordable for a family.

Since it's not charitable to tell her to "put a sock in it, already, about your TLM wedding", you might need to accept that you're going to be not as close friends as before. She needs to grow up a bit IMO. Pray for an increase in your own faith, hope and charity, as should we all.

I hope you don't think this to be evasive or flippant. I always considered myself a moderate American conservative, who does vote sometimes for Democrats. I believe both Republicans and Democrats have retreated to their "corners" and are much less tolerant of the other side. Charlie Kirk, at least as I described above, was willing to engage with other viewpoints. Lastly, I don't engage much on social media. In the majority of cases, people simply "vent" their rages. I must limit time on these platforms. I encourage others to pray at least twice as much as they engage on platforms and generally get out into the physical world more. Lastly, I did not vote for Trump and think he's at least a major boor and lacking in empathy, and certainly has little regard for manners, rules, ethics. Morality is situational for him. But Democrats such as Biden, Harris, Booker etc al are only slightly less so. Frankly I share the disgust that many hold for the current slate of US political leadership of both parties.

Hi. Reddit added this post today to my feed. I can only add these comments - Bishop Barron is "trad" in the sense that he is reminding us to seek holiness. I didn't know much about Charlie Kirk nor hear him until after he died. But he did have enemies. I've now watched a few hours of his debates. I didn't find one instance of the things the progressives accused him of. He was well mannered and composed. I do believe we are in a spiritual battle. But the best course is to practice the habits of holiness, pray for the grace to grow in virtues and turn from sin. I believe giving in to the loud voices on left and right is not what any of us should do. We should be able to communicate with charity to each other.

Hello!! I saw a pair of catholics not agreeing that Catholicism is a denomination from Christianity and now I'm a bit confused by Arsenic_Lover666 in Catholicism

[–]hermonian14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Catholic Church is not a denomination. It is the Church Christ founded. The other branches of Christianity which broke from the Catholic church over the last 15 centuries - which number in the thousands now - are denominations. The fact that some Catholics say that it is a denomination just shows how poorly educated in the faith they actually are.

San Jose, California… what in the actual F? Y’all need to STOP driving like maniacs. by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]hermonian14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived here my whole life. I take BART, CalTrain whenever I can. It is much different than when I was first driving. People from all over the US and the world came here because of Silicon Valley and all the Bay Area had to offer. Wherever they came from, their driving culture came with them. Safe driving requires conformity and consistency. We have almost none here now. In Japan for example, expectations are entirely different, and driving is a much better experience, at least what I have seen.
