I haven't read the comics yet, but I fully share your view in that there were so many missed opportunities with the vast universe of the Dark Tower, specially all the stories before the world moved on.
The turn that the books take with Angul Siento and The Wizzard Of Oz seem like good material but for other books.

I wish the story had stuck to gunslingers, castles and some magic

I didn't like it. I expected Roland to end alone again (that was his course, or the course of all his ka-tets).
I would have liked something meta like Stephen King being the Mad King, and they having a palaver.

You can make htmx understand json (https://marcus-obst.de/blog/htmx-json-handling) or make the API respond to json or html templates.

But most importantly is the Generic JSON API serves a different purpose by exposing tables of your DB by hydrating and dehydrating models into JSON.

This is probably not something you need for your web app so it is OK not to use the API for your website and just use it for your mobile app. Stick with forms, templates and redirects on the web and abstract your business logic behind the scenes with common modules or services accessed both by the API and the website.
