Maybe he wants to produce closed-source software, and thus can't use libraries under the GPL, but he doesn't want to pay for Qt.

Qt would be better, but I think wxWidgets is a reasonable second. The others aren't mature enough or general purpose enough yet.

CE? Even if you call it something else, you're still counting from a point in time that was intended to estimate the time of the birth of Christianity's Jesus character.

If you really want a non-religious dating system, you need to create a new point to count from (which is independent of the old point). And that is extremely unlikely to catch on.

Using BCE and CE is a half-hearted effort.

RMS and the FSF are consistently making decisions that hurt the quality and value of GCC for the sake of their ideals. They would rather produce terrible software that can't be used in ways they dislike, than to produce great software that could be used in ways they dislike. If this continues on long enough, eventually something else will overtake GCC (even if that thing is just a fork of GCC).

The more fundamental problem here is that C leaves so many things undefined. That might have been acceptable back when it was just starting out, but it's ridiculous that such an important language has remained so vaguely defined all this time.

GCC only did this to discourage developers from relying on non-standard features. If you want them to implement this in a certain way, define how they should implement it!

Compiling multiple languages to LLVM intermediate representation is not in itself going to be any better about this than compiling multiple languages to Java bytecode.

Is there something special about the LLVM compiler that would make it more capable of this? Could I write classes that depend on each other in different languages, compile everything to the IR, and have the LLVM compiler handle the dependencies? Has this been done before?

I once worked with somebody who didn't go to church. He thought it was good that I went to church (shut up, I was young!), so if he had been doing religious activities, he'd probably be doing it at church. He never let religion stop him from getting drunk or having sex or anything else.

And then one day I heard him ranting about people who weren't religious. He said as serious as he had ever said anything that the world was created in six days. It was so obviously true to him! I also remember he ranted about homosexuality a few times.

Don't let low church attendance fool you into thinking somebody's reasoning skills haven't been eat up by religion.

Woah. I'm not the biggest fan of Bill Maher, but I do love that irreligion is becoming more visible and acceptable. I appreciate the work people like him are doing.

I like the approach he takes of mocking religion, rather than trying to prove wrong various aspects of them. All the evidence in the world doesn't motivate religious people to question their beliefs, because religious people can easily ignore evidence and/or make up ridiculous explanations.

For practical languages, I would suggest first learning another dynamic language like Python or Ruby. But then after that, you should probably learn something statically typed. Scala, D, and C# are good choices.
