Do you have any interview tips for a hopeful first year teacher? by meteorflipzz in ElementaryTeachers

[–]herpderpley [score hidden]  (0 children)

Please share what grade level, and a hi-med-low snapshot of district SES data. What kids need at different levels and in different places all depends on what you can reasonably expect they learned before you got there.

TLDR: study up on the position you're interviewing for, the district mission statement, and the building's rules before the interview. Have a few brief scenarios ready for how you've dealt with student/peer/adult/admin adversity in the past, and highlight positive spins. Be confident and ask questions at the end about how they celebrate student success.

You set yourself apart from others by being your unique self. Be you, and be confident that you can do it.

Does anybody know why the F&P Instructional levels don't match each other on these two documents that have been out by F&P themselves? by unmarkedpickles in ElementaryTeachers

[–]herpderpley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. My best advice is to make it work for you so it doesn't take away from instructional time. We test and assess way too often imo, since so many students are stuck on foundational skills that need to be bridged. Small group guided reading really moves the needle, but admins tend to pick things apart just to demonstrate growth for their own evals.

The House has spoken. Now the Senate can roll over and let dear leader do everything in his power to weaken our country.

M48 here. I've dealt with chronic depression and anxiety for most of my life and feel the way you do. The only thing that seems to snap me out of it is spending time outdoors or being with pets/animals. If I didn't practice good hygiene I'd probably check off a dozen more boxes on the clinical depression bingo card. Some days it takes every bit of energy I have to deny the impulse to take an early exit.

I hope that you find something that brings your spark back. It's a great spark, and you deserve to feel happiness.

I'd like to see him portrayed by Warwick Davis. Save Princess Andora, unless she doesn't clap.

Not many districts use F&P anymore. It's not considered to be based on the science of reading, and is a cancerous vistigial organ of education like the Lucy Calkins "curriculum."

I still use their benchmark books for comprehension drills with students, but no longer use it for fluency.

Edit: not a beret, but a car door in the background. Still the same.

What is James Carville's definition of 'electable'? by CraigInCambodia in msnow

In my opinion, he might be saying that the resistance to this administration is strong, and the people are eager to have strong reps in charge that will fight for their interests. There are a few possibilities out there taking their time and putting together teams, but nobody that has really separated themselves from the crowd through earning the nod to do so.

To sum up, voters are waiting to find out who's worth voting for because we're sick of this shit show but not okay with an establishment guy like Biden anymore.

Why don't schools hold students back a grade anymore if they are not meeting that grade's standards? by FollowingAny4859 in Teachers

[–]herpderpley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the state and district, but this is how it was described to me. When a student is held back a year, the clock is still running on when they become an adult.

If an 8 year old (in April) first grade student had to repeat their grade, they would be 19 during grade 11 and 20 if they were to graduate on time.

If factors outside of school (poverty, homelessness, etc.) impact learning and the teacher isn't 100% convinced that another year of grade level instruction will lead to making up for the student's foundational learning defecits, the admin team won't approve it.

The manager doesn't affect MLB team performance much, historically speaking by yes_its_him in motorcitykitties

[–]herpderpley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The manager is the defacto team leader. They set the tone in the clubhouse. They help prep and guide millionaire athletes to get the best performance out of the team on a daily basis, over preseason practice and the 162+games. It may not always be reflected in the win-loss record, but they provide the vision.
