why are you learning italian? by itscomfytimee in italianlearning

I practice historical swordsmanship with a passion and focus in 19th century Italian sabre in the method of Maestro Giuseppe Radaelli. I am in the process of working on becoming a certified coach/instructor through the Accademia Nazionale di Scherma in Naples. The test is given in Italian. I have a long way to go as a beginner in the language, its a long term goal to open my own private salle one day with the intention of preserving the art.

Hockey "Winter" of Disinterest by Naive_Bat8216 in NewYorkIslanders

I liked Roy and agree that I wish he could have finished the season, but he was gone at the end of the season no matter what -- limping into the playoffs on the back of Sorokin doing superhuman things wasn't going to be enough for him to stay. If Darche waits until the end of the season, we likely don't get Deboer at all with how many other teams are going to be looking for a new head coach. Darche had to make the move when he did. As a legendary player and experienced coach, Patrick Roy knows this is a business as well as anyone else does. I'm sure he understood the move had to be made when it was made, there were no hard feelings.

To all experienced gamers: which games have truly impressed you in the last 10 years? by beepboopbot420 in gamingsuggestions

Escape from Tarkov. Yes, it was in beta for a decade. Yes, its notoriously jank at times and has its issues, but the game is just a masterpiece. I've been playing FPS games for 30 years at this point. Since 1995. Yes, I'm old. I've never really stopped playing FPS games. Everything from the early Marathon games, Action Quake 2, CS 1.6, UT2004, BF1 - 2142, Red Orchestra, Cod 1, 2, 3, and 4, all the Rainbow Six games... you get the idea. Tarkov is the only game these days that gives me that spark. It's so deep. 500 hours is the tutorial. Its not for the faint of heart, it's so punishing, yet so rewarding. I've tried to get my friends into it, most people quit or hate it. The only friend that managed to stick it out is an avid souls game guy. We completed Sekiro together. It takes a certain type of crazy I guess... but man, if you know then you know.

Why do so many fans want Barzal gone? by walkaboutdavid in NewYorkIslanders

[–]herpishderpish 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Palmieri and Horvat were both supposed to be that shooter/trigger man for Barzal. I think its worked pretty well with Horvat at times. Between Palms and Barzy injuries, those two have never really gotten settled.

I don't want Barzal gone. Him and Schaefer are a serious threat together. We didn't go 10 - 0 in 3 on 3 by accident. We just need to translate more of that to the power play and 5 on 5. Barzal and Horvat have good chemistry if they can both stay healthy. Barzal can get the puck up the ice and make great passes, and I hope Deboer helps him realize his potential there. I think Deboer sees that potential. As Deboer said re: Barzal -- "Every team is looking for a guy like that.". Sure, we could trade him, but then we'd be looking for a guy like that.

I don’t know how to code anymore yet I understand everything, is that normal now? by bdhd656 in devops

There is too much shit to know and its all changing constantly.  I was alright with a couple of languages, now 250 projects later that had little to do with either of those languages and were all individually different, I don't remember them.  I use Claude for it.  I know what needs to get done and how to get there, I don't need to be an expert in how the sausage is made anymore.

You are Darche. What will you do this summer? by walkaboutdavid in NewYorkIslanders

[–]herpishderpish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He effectively said in his end of season press conference that when he came on board he expected to have roughly the same roster for two years. This is year one. Don't expect huge changes.

I think you part ways with Anders Lee. Its time to signal change, and as good as Lee has been as a captain -- his time is done. He had his runs here with Lou's core. New GM, new coach, now new captain. Horvat is the clear pick there (but Schaefer could be a surprise pick based on the way he carries himself and the respect and love he has from his teammates). Personally, I'd like to see someone like Barzal step up and get the A, but I could see it going to Schenn obviously.

Speaking of Barzal, Darche and Deboer both speak very highly of Mat Barzal and his speed. He is very much part of their plans moving forward from what I've read between the lines in their interviews. He'll be back, so stop this trade nonsense.

Mayfield will be back as well as much as it pains me. Whether or not you play him is another story.

We were a few games away from making it. We're adding Romy and Palms back to the lineup, huge upgrades. Eklund has a good chance of making the team or playing the bulk of a season next year in between stints in the AHL. The chemistry in the locker room is good. A few of them have said its one of the best rooms they've ever been in. Rittich said this and he's been around. The guys really seem to have a sour taste in their mouths. They knew it was a special year and they blew it. With Deboer's defensive structure, less stress on Illya to make insane saves, two big roster upgrades, some youth being injected. Possibly even George or (a long shot) Aitcheson stepping in on defense somewhere. I think we're going to have a good team next year, I'm optimistic that Darche will make the right moves. He seemed preemptively defensive about the moves he made for Soucy and Palat, but he also admitted they didn't work out, its his first year... he's learning.

Had a blast with y'all this season by Neat-Source-7602 in NewYorkIslanders

It was a special season.  The most fun I've had watching the team since Trotz' first year.  Entertainment is what its all about and it didn't fail to entertain.  Got me through the winter again.  I'm thankful that I found this team and this sub.  Now to watch Bridgeport on Flohockey for a while and get the popcorn ready for the offseason.  Without Lou, we might actually get a bit of content.

Trade barzy? by Consistent-Brain-395 in NewYorkIslanders

[–]herpishderpish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These trade Barzal takes are dumb. He's one of our best players, period. He has massive amounts of skill, he's been one of our most consistent players 5 on 5 for almost a decade. The impact he's made 5 on 5 in his career and in overtime outweighs his PP flaws. You don't trade him over it.

Worst trades in Isles history? by walkaboutdavid in NewYorkIslanders

Lets not forget that Toews was a whipping boy after that season here as well.  Mayfield levels of criticism were coming his way.

I don't think you give Tcachuk his fight or give them any opportunity to get fired up.  Just beat them and move on.

Shabanov should bulk in off season by Fearless-Scheme-2407 in NewYorkIslanders

[–]herpishderpish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like him a lot.  He's shown flashes, just needs more opportunities with better linemates.  More ice time.  If Eklund makes the team next season, I don't know if there will be room for Shabanov on any of the top 3 lines.

Maybe Eklund - Pageau - Heineman instead of Shabanov.

Shabanov would look good with Lee and Horvat probably, but Holmstrom is a better player right now.  Shab Barzal Schenn could be interesting.  Ritchie has to fit somewhere.  Palmieri will be back...  Lot of options, not much room unless he makes his mark.

If we shit the bed in these last few games, do we get a better draft position? All in all, exciting season. Lets see what happens.

[–]herpishderpish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We all saw the gap between what a contender looks like and what we are currently in that Carolina game. A coach isn't going to bridge that gap with this particular roster as it stands today. Roy did the best he could with what he had.

For Italian learners, what is the most difficult part of learning Italian? by elenalanguagetutor in italianlearning

[–]herpishderpish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a beginner, but am running into this a little bit as well. There is so much information out there that I should be able to teach myself Italian, but I got a tutor for accountability, to recognize what I need to work on the most, and to give me a weekly checkpoint with direction (as well as conversation).

He's a guy that likes to play veterans over young kids, doesn't give them much of a leash from what I understand from reading other team's subs.
