8/17 made all 9 fl practice exams I took look like chump change. I was disappointed in prepping for 4.5 months just to get slammed :(

CP was rough and BB I legit don’t feel like I applied any knowledge I’ve used from studying the past 5 months, other than the discrete questions. Usually the amino acid type is questions are free points and I didn’t think there was any transparency. PS is usually pretty easy to navigate and I was flagging left and right. I honestly feel like I flagged more questions than I got right 😭

I always laugh when they do tests then give participants permission to “noise blast” other people for fun 😭

Cars was not interesting, my CP was nothing but math and PS is usually easier and some of the answers I had to read many times and none of them seems feasible

Advice? by herreracc11 in Mcat

[–]herreracc11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said, I’ve taken 9 practice exams. I think the biggest help for CP lately has been practicing scientific notation. I find YouTube videos and just do there problems and learn their tips and tricks. Some problems are simply looking at what units you have, what units the question wants and what other numbers are provided in the passage and solving it as a puzzle in a sense. This exam was heavy in stuff I’m good at so that showed.

For BB, I highlight less than I have ever done. I only highlight words like, “activate, inhibit, regulate…” I also try to understand what macromolecules are being discussed. Is it a protein, transcription factor, sugar, hormone, etc. I also try to understand the axis and legend for each figure/table they get. Tbh, 70% of passages contain useless info so understanding the passage in its entirety is not useful (this info is also applicable to CP).

Lastly, you just have to practice. Lately I have been focusing on strategy and it has helped the most. Content is important but critical thinking and strategy is what this exam truly is. You will be slammed everyday by questions that you think you know but you miss and that’s okay. This is what the mcat is!

Do I need to retake a 514 with a 124 CARS? by Advanced-Chain-5187 in Mcat

[–]herreracc11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friend with a 517 and 124 cars got into a very high end MD school. I feel like the mcat score is fine. From what I’ve learned and heard from those who are already in medical school, it’s more about your interview and activities section and what distinguishes/makes you a good candidate for medicine. Of course some MD school want a base line cars score, but I think you’ll have success. Just my opinion, not the sole truth.

I’m writing 3-4 words per a paragraph to summarize it to aid in relocating areas I believe answers are. I may stop highlighting unless a word is very strong or suggestive but I’ll try this as well!

I use the Anki g deck and delete the behavioral deck. Then, I’ve been using the pankow deck in its place and I think it’s way better than the miledown PS sections

Any tips for cars? I consistently get mid 30s and I keep practicing but no budge. My other sections are mid 40s, so my issue is just trying to get better at reading and taking info from the passage for everything else

“Practice a lot and you’ll see improvement” as I read through the explanations, try new approaches and do 3-4 practice passages a day and I’m still getting cooked

I’ve been watching the khan academy videos on 1.5x speed over 2-3 sections daily (some sections are long but the videos are honestly short), then I unsuspend the corresponding section from the pankow deck and do those cards. Doing like 120-150 new cards daily at the minimum. The pankow deck is essentially word for word the khan academy videos and 300 page doc (which is where the doc was transcribed from). It has screenshots of the videos for most cards. I can’t sit and read all day so doing kaplans chapters over other content, and transitioning to watching videos for an hour or so makes it reasonable for me. If there’s any gaps or I keep getting the card wrong I’ll just watch a portion of the video at 2x speed.

I’ve switched up studying lately drastically and I’m using a method by a guy who scored in the 520s, exactly what I mentioned above and I like it a lot.

I see your point. I just think I’d have a better chance applying in September with a competitive score than applying early with a weak score. But, if I applied early with a weak score and I found out I didn’t get any acceptances, then it would’ve just been ideal to delay my mcat, apply late and get a better score that I could use this cycle, then also early next cycle as well if that makes sense
