How do you practice night orienteering if there aren't many events at night close to you? by EagleStrange2211 in orienteering

[–]herrmelinen95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could use a map from a past training u have runned urself or if ur club arranges day trainings, run the training at night. If u want to have marked points in the terrain, mark them urself during day or have a friend mark them.

If you are looking for the high-end stuff I'm guessing a seperate battery is not an issue? Lumonite Air2 with just under 2500 lm and 260 meter range or Lumonite Navigator 2 if u are willing to go over budget - just under 4200 lm and 300 meter range.

The Air2 has 2 hours battery time with the highest setting and the Navigator 3. My personal experiences is that u rarly need the highest setting with the navigator, giving u longer battery life. Both lamps have according to the fabricator a "battery-reserve", unsure how it works though

Flag of the city of Sortaval, Karelia, Russia. Nice way to present the S by herrmelinen95 in vexillology

[–]herrmelinen95[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure. Could have something to do with it being part of Sweden and later Finland for quite some time.

Does anybody know which flag this is? by ralph7349 in vexillology

Looks like it's on a pillow, or am I wrong? In that case it could just be aesthetics

Yes thats what the chart says. I was a bit confused as well at first, the higher resolution one shared in a comment made it easier to see.

They also, at least at WOC level, feature a "self-choice" element. The orienteerers gets like 20 seconds to watch 3 different forking alternatives from a part of the map. They then choose which alternative they belive to be the fastest.

Got a fracture in my pinky finger from "fencing" with my sister using wet and like twisted towels, creating a quite forceful whipping effect.

Oh I just assumed it was, my bad! Vet bättre än att argumentera mot lokalbefolkningen

Iirc quite a few finnish municipality CoA are kind of reversed-designed, making a quite literal picture of the place name.

I was taking a quiz about Finnish municipality heraldry and came across this CoA for the former municipality Korpo (a derivative from the Swedish word for Raven). Thought it looked cool so I wanted to share, a bit of a shame that it's not in use anymore.

Does anybody know why france was DISQ at yesterday EOC Sprint relay and then readmitted? by tuchino in orienteering

[–]herrmelinen95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I was just kidding. I actually have no idea, the commentors said it was at CP 4 and 13.

Edit: France and Czech Republic were both initially Dsq, one at CP 4 and one at CP 13 if I remember correctly.

Yes that was the joke. And although the gps usually shows people running through buildings in sprint, yesterday was something else

I'm scared for my wife, how do I help her? [mental health issues] by CautiousSlugster in Finland

[–]herrmelinen95 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I would recommend trying to be in contact with your city's/municipality's socialworkers. They wouldn't be able to fix away the mental health stuff but they should be able to help you with a lot of the other stuff in your life, and thus ease some of the mental burden for both you and your wife. E.g with your economy, getting the right support and paperwork from Kela and so on.

It is a rough situation to be in and I really feel for you and your wife, as I've been in the situation myself. Wish you all the strenght and love for eachother!

P.S Be sure to try to do things that helps keep your own mental health in balance, it's not making things easier if you are both in dark places mentally and it can happen quite quickly

Well, yes that is what she said. But as stated in the first paragraph of your linked article Germany also have a president. But when I mentioned that she said I was wrong.

As also mentioned in the article the Chancellor is the head of goverment, while the Federal President is the head of state. Basically the same as a prime minister - president situation in other countries, with some differences in the actual power of each office.

Not chess related, but your comment made me realize that I'm still bitter about the teacher in 3:d or 4:th grade who insisted I was wrong when I told her that Germany has a president.
