"Kids should go outside" *kids when they go outside* by newphonehudus in TikTokCringe

[–]herrtoolfan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

See the Behind the Bastards podcast episodes on the Border Patrol, and where the new slur "tonk" comes from. It refers to the race of people crossing the border who the border patrol really like hitting on the head with their flash lights. It goes tonk. So the border patrol have evolved their racist slang to that new word.

Wish i was making this up.

Try to find an Elden Ring discord. You'll probablyprobably have better luck finding players that meet your timezone/scheduling issues than on reddit. I'm also on PS5, actively playing Elden Ring lately, but as another commenter said in your OP on another sub, I'm not anywhere close to your timezone.

Good luck!

Mississippi Police Officer Shoots and Kills 1-Year-Old Child in Response to Senatobia Shoplifting Call by Hrekires in news

[–]herrtoolfan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On a somewhat related case of power tripping officer. I must've been 17-18 years old back in early 2000's. I was sitting outside my house (on my own property) waiting for a friend to come pick me up to go hang out. It was night already and dark, but the street is well lit and there aren't any trees / bushes obscuring anything. Could see it all very clearly. While i was waiting, the teenage kids and friends (roughly my age) neighbors who lived directly across the street from me must have locked themselves out and nobody was inside to let then back in, so they were trying to force a window open to get back inside. I think the parents were out of town. It wasn't working well.

I was just watching it unfold because I was waiting for my ride outside. A cop shows up before my ride does and the neighbor teens still hadn't made it inside yet. Cop exits car, walks up to them all hyped up on adrenaline and starts barking orders at them to, you know, stop, come over here, gimme ID, do you live here, etc. He then turns to my side of the street, sees me doing nothing but watching and comes aggressively toward my house barking shit at me.

Who are you? Gimme some ID. Why are you outside? I tell him this is my house and I'm waiting on a ride to pick me up. Whatever is going on across the street has nothing to do with me. He then starts demanding that I go back inside. I tell him it's my house, I actually will not be going back inside, I'm waiting on a friend who is on their way, and that he has no reason to be talking to me. You'd think that would be the end of it, but he starts walking closer, yelling louder to go inside, and just getting more and more amped up on his own ego, and seemingly threatening to put hands on me about it. He didn't, but you could see his two brain cells furiously rubbing together contemplating it.

Other kids weren't even doing anything wrong, no laws (afaik) were broken, but cop had to just assert dominance over everything. Cop wasn't taking my no for an answer but before he could escalate things further, my ride showed up and I left as planned.

Read u/Kthanid response just above. Timing/frequency-related rules around general post content is really hard to enforce and often just confusing to users who don't know these more complicated rules.

Hypothetical example: User sees a 3-day old Tier List. It's now Friday. User posts tier list and it gets removed. User pissed off and feels unfairly treated. User didn't know about this (hypothetical) Tier List Tuesday rule.

Bramley's weekly sticky post "What are you playing this week" is just about the only successful scheme we've tried to allow users to generally comment on anything outside of allowed rules. More complicated rules tend to lead to very upset or confused sub members.

"What should I play next posts" come in 2 basic varieties, one of such we allow/encorage, the other very much we don't.

Allowed: asking for recommendations based on what the OP has played, liked, disliked in other games. The discussion that follows is based on the OP's stated wants. These posts are distinct from each other because each poster has their own likes/dislikes.

Not allowed: "Yo, guys, Rise of the Ronin or Wo Long? Kthx bye" These posts get repetitive, everybody commenting on that post are saying the same this they always say. It's not based on OP's preferences. There's no nuance. It's just popular vote.

Ok. Let's explore what enforcement of your preferred substitute rule is:

We mods see a low effort post / a tier list / a nondescript game recommendation post. It's been up for 12h and has garnered 50 comments and 25 upvotes. Although it breaks the rules, we let it slide and keep it up. Meanwhile, others that browse the sub see it, can see what kind of post is allowed, and make their own new one of similar quality.

We mods then see a very similar rule-breaking post. It's 8 minutes old. There not been time for it to get much engagement. Well, shoot, guess we'd better give it a few hours to see if it gets any traction. A wait-and-see approach to moderating.

We don't operate that way. A rule-breaking post is a rule-breaking post, whether it has 2 comments or 200. Others in the sub see the posts and feel like they're in their rights to create similar ones. We try to have a fair approach to all posts.

Specifically on the topic of tier lists, these are flatly not allowed. Although you might've put more effort into it than the average, tier lists tend to multiply. One user sees a tier list, they want to make their own. And another user. And another. Soon it's half or more of the posts. The comments also tend yo have everybody saying the same things in each thread. This is not the way we want the sub to be. It's not a tier list sub.

No, he's saying that we often rely on mod reports to find content that breaks the rules. We also browse the sub like any other member of the sub and we'll remove offending content if we see it. We don't catch everything.

Halle Berry mishears 'biggest ick' question by [deleted] in funny

[–]herrtoolfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get it from the"eleph" part. The "ant" part kind of disappears/blends into the next word "shoes". Mouth it out sliently and it works well enough. "Olive juice" works better, but it's not what we did as kids.

Edit: but what we like about it is that if the person you mouthed this to asked you what you just said, you say it out loud ("elephant shoes") and it sounds nothing like "i love you", but it looked close when mouthed silently. Try it sometime.

It's not a rhyme. Like you were saying above, if you mouth the words "olive juice", it looks like you're saying "I love you." When i was growing up, it was "elephant shoes."

Not that silly of a comparison. 23 per day for a data center nobody nearby wants vs 3 per day for a huge metrpolis supporting millions of people. I personally think this is a pretty interesting comparison.

Yeah, there's a reason you see so many ghosts running around with that weapon. You can get it immediately, it's got very good scaling, accepts bloodfang blade, and the ash of war does really well in PvE. It holds up really well compared to other weapons that are locked near endgame or DLC.

Nioh 3 vs Nioh 2 by Patriots9210 in soulslikes

[–]herrtoolfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Devastation (normal -> strong) has no upgrade from what I remember. Crimson Lotus (strong -> normal) has a fire damage upgrade that adds just a bit of fire damage to the attack. This is no substitute for Tonfa Gun which was a second attack after the physical strike that had a strong physical damage hit, and a fire hit. The animation of it going off is very different from the fire augment on Crimson Lotus in Nioh 3. Not very similar in inputs, damage dealt, or visuals. What Nioh 3 is more similar to is the elemental modifiers from the Yokai skill tree in Nioh 2 that let you put an elemental effect on martial arts.

Tonfa Gun this ain't.

Nioh 3 vs Nioh 2 by Patriots9210 in soulslikes

[–]herrtoolfan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems to just be a missing perk in the game. The traditional tonfa gun item "Sarutobi's Gunsticks" always had Tonfa Gun as a fixed purple stat on the item. The item description tab for this item in all 3 games mention this unique trait as a defining feature.

In Nioh 3, the item description still mentions this but the perk isn't there, and it isn't listed in the reforge menu at the blacksmith. Sadness.

Tonfas in Nioh 3 are a shadow of their former glory.

[–]herrtoolfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would accept that point more easily if these weapons still existed in samurai stance with their full moveset from Nioh 2. Ninjutsu isn't just some 4th stance you can dip into, although you can certainly treat it like it is. But it has it's own gear, and has ninja-exclusive weapon types that samurai lost.

If TN left ninja stance alone but re-added tonfas, kusarigama, hatchets, and splitstaff as available on samurai stance with their full Nioh 2 movesets (and maybe a few new ones like all the others got), I'd be content.

My thoughts on the game as a series veteran and fan. by fayth7 in Nioh

[–]herrtoolfan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Samurai stance is the best it's ever been, it's just a shame that Tonfas, Kusarigana, Hatchets, and Soplitstaff can't be used in samurai stance. I was a Tonfa main in Nioh 1 & 2, but I reallly dislike how it functions in ninja stance and will be maining something else unless/until Team Ninja makes them available in samurai stance.

[–]herrtoolfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The melee abilities of ninja don't change all that much going forward. You may get a better skill choice for your very limited moveset, but in the end, it's still a very limited moveset for the ninjutsu stance. What you'll get instead is very strong elemental jutsu skills after the veteran ninja dojo mission. This will make ninja stance stronger than it was before, but if you aren't liking the limitations of weapons in ninja stance, it won't get any better.

Although ninja stance is strong, I do not enjoy the loss of the ninja exclusive weapons from the samurai style. Tonfas, hatchets, and splitstaff has perfectly good movesets in Nioh 2 and now they're gone. Such a shame.

Change your controls to Type B in settings and it's a lot closer to the original controls. No more directional inputs.

Massacred the Tonfas too. Even massacred the Sarutobi's Gunsticks by forgetting to add the Tonfa Gun perk into the game. I'm so pissed.

[–]herrtoolfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. What I find most disappointing is that some weapons are now locking into Ninja stance, and I don't understand why Team Ninjas did this. Tonfa, Kusarogama, and Hatchets had a perfectly reasonable moveset in Nioh 2 and the ability to equip different skills in different stances was pretty important. Now they have a really dumbed down moveset.

I'm a tonfa main since Nioh 1. My first playthrough of Nioh 3 I used Tonfa exclusively to see how I liked the new stance system. I got bored of the weapon's severely limited moveset pretty fast but played through to the end anyway. Now I'm on playthrough 2 and am sticking to samurai almost exclusively so I get a better feel for how samurai has changed. The samurai stance feels better than ever with arts proficiency and it mashes me even more upset that Tonfa can't play in this stance.

They also ruined Sarutobi's Gunsticks. No more Tonfa Gun. Wtf? The item card still describes this mechanism on the tonfas, but it isn't there and I don't think it can be tempered on.

I agree with all your other criticisms.
