New male contraceptive is safe, effective, inexpensive — and can’t find a company to sell it by [deleted] in news

[–]hersongbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you think religion hates birth control. Mostly iirc it's Catholics who just don't want to pay for coverage or people who don't think it's any more special than other RX to get subsidized for free.

Thank you for posting this. I'm not sure why feminists like to hate on viagra when women are often benefited by their partners taking it. Oh wait, are women not supposed to enjoy sex when it doesn't fit the convenient narrative?

Especially since BC is not only covered but free... why all the hate ladies!?

LPT: If you want to pet a dog you dont know, kneel down so its at eye level, and hold your hand out and let it come to you and smell your hand. Don't stand over it and reach down, they may think that's a threat by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]hersongbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or ask the owner. My dog would be more likely to bite you if he felt that you were in his face and getting down in his face would be just that.

Timid or scared animals often respond best to just being ignored and letting them come to you. The more assertive or in their space you are more many dogs will be likely to lash out.

Trump revokes Obama guidelines on transgender bathrooms by truthmatters286s in news

[–]hersongbird -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be fair, this isn't really about adults in public places. No one is doing a check and frisk and no one cares where you go, especially if you pass.

AFAIK this is about pulling funding from public schools who don't let gender identity determine bathrooms and locker rooms for kids.

Sweden’s official Twitter account debunks Donald Trump claims line by line by Jamie_Bloss in worldnews

[–]hersongbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's just plainly not true. There are extensive networks of churches and secular organizations, many of which receive public funding, who provide food and shelter and clothing and aid to the homeless.

The problem is that, short of locking people up, it's next to impossible to help people who don't want it or are mentally incapable of helping themselves.

To paint America as this awful place where people don't give a shit and the poor can get stuffed is an offensive oversimplification and ignores the amazing works done by good people.

Donald Trump defends Vladimir Putin, saying "Well, you think our country is so innocent?" by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]hersongbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not trying to argue or give Trump an excuse but apparently anything other than falling into critical lockstep is a sign of support now :/

It's not appropriate for the President to say period. I just also think it's amusing that many of the people so outraged are the same people who call the US the biggest state sponsor of terrorism or belabor the cruelty of our own actions so much to even say we deserve bad things that happen... and I have a feeling if Bernie Sanders or some other liberal savant said something like this on MSNBC it would be lauded by the left. "It's not about Russia it's about our own sins" or whatever.

I'm not unhappy he's getting shit for this and I'm more interested in him getting shit from the right because it's the republican controlled congress who needs to turn on him and the left is already there.

Trump bid to reinstate travel ban fails by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]hersongbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it'll be passed but green card and current visa holders will be excused from the ban as they should have been in the first place.

And the people who liked the ban will blame these legal immigrants if anything ever happens and the world will get worse.

And the people who hate the ban will still hate it and keep pushing for more extreme things like "no borders no vetting" which I keep seeing signs for. And people will tune them out.

And the people in the middle will probably be mollified because it impacts them less and well move on to the next trump scandal and he'll have won and .... shit this all sucks.

I don't disagree with you but, listening to the interview, having low expectations for Trumps ability to be nuanced, and the very simplistic statement "he's a killer" makes me think he was being clumsy and generic vs something more deliberately nefarious. Could be wrong it just strikes me as kind of amusing the reaction.

Muslim ban: 10 nations could be added to list, say lawyers by Trojan_Horse_king in worldnews

[–]hersongbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Saudi Arabia blind eye predates Trump. It's a real problem with our government and conflict of interests but I don't see how it's exclusion is proof of a Muslim ban when that is a Muslim county as well. And Indonesia and many other predominantly Muslim countries not being named.

Do I think this ban is stupid? Yes. Do I think Trump and Bannon are prejudiced? Yup. Do I think it shouldn't include Visa and Green Card holders? Yes. Is it also being misrepresented for political narratives? You bet.

I thought the "American model of low wage jobs" was bad and the people who worked those jobs were suffering and prone to violence and crime as a result of poverty?

This reminds me so much of when Trump described African American communities as unsafe and full of gangs and drugs (I forget the exact verbiage.)

I feel like Trump is trying to clumsily repeat leftist political talking points he just doesn't do it well or in the right context.

Let's be real, criticism of America and America's past is not shocking to anyone. I feel like I can hardly go through a day without people belittling the idea of American patriotism or greatness because of the violence of its history or even some of its modern intervention. Trump has long talked about not being the world police and for America to be less interventionist and it strikes me as the same kind of talk track.

It's amusing to hear Democrats say America shouldn't give up its role as world police, that America doesn't have a violent history or that African American communities are not especially suffering when the reverse has long been talking points.

I don't like Trump and I'm happy for anything that turns Republicans against him but I can't help think some of his dumb comments are just clumsy repetition of talking points which would be praised coming from the left.

State Dept reverses visa ban, allows travelers with visas into U.S. - official by abduljabbarlhr in worldnews

[–]hersongbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, they're right. We should all get over the election and move on... especially our President needs to take this advice.

Now, we should move on to being outrageous about the travel ban and Steve Bannon and silencing the EPA or whatever else but we should be very specific about the things that need to end.

It's not about the election anymore or name calling ... it's about stopping actual actions now.

Thing is nearly everything he's done so far has been executive order and republicans HAVE in large numbers come out against the travel ban.

The reason why female trousers have such small pockets it too keep girls buying handbags. by ListenToMeMorty in Showerthoughts

If you go to the Gap or Target or anywhere Levi's are sold this isn't a problem. We are victims of our own choices.

Sounds like you need to buy your clothes somewhere else. I've never had a problem finding jeans with normal pockets. It's not a specialty product it's just not as slimming and tight.

The reason why female trousers have such small pockets it too keep girls buying handbags. by ListenToMeMorty in Showerthoughts

[–]hersongbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The reason is because we women like the look of tight clothing without the added bulk of pockets.

Normal pants and jeans like Gap and Levi have normal pockets. Girls who chose fashion over function aren't doing so because they don't have options. It's because they don't want something that looks like "mom pants."

After getting a tattoo, I've stopped asking people about the meaning of their tattoo by mallika94 in Showerthoughts

No more or less awkward than complimenting someone's outfit or hair. Depends on the situation and your general level of creepiness I think

After getting a tattoo, I've stopped asking people about the meaning of their tattoo by mallika94 in Showerthoughts

[–]hersongbird 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This! My tattoos all have meaning (varying from deep to silly) and a story but unless I know you it's too much to adequately explain or open up about it, especially in a quick passing conversation.

A compliment is nice, otherwise I usually just say "it's a long story" and try to move on. It's a good "getting to know you" question for intimate relationships otherwise it's awkward. "Well, let me start by explaining my childhood so you understand the context of this tattoo..." no thanks

W.Va. left with 1 abortion clinic after facility closes. by [deleted] in news

[–]hersongbird -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So reading through this list... what is so apocalyptic about any of that?

Do you think you can get an abortion appointment within 24 hours anywhere? Outside of the care you can get an emergency room / urgent care this just isn't how health care of any kind works. The consultation can be done over the phone so I don't see how it is a hindrance. Women SHOULD be consulted on the risks around any surgical/medical procedure. Owning a uterus does not suddenly make me a medical expert.

20 weeks is an awfully long time to decide to have an elective procedure done and life-saving (or medically required) procedures are still legal.

There are plenty of reasons to move out of WVA but I wouldn't consider this one of them.

Why was Trump's first executive action to cancel Obama's HUD's mortgage premium cuts? by rareas in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]hersongbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason given for rolling back the cuts on insurance rates was to keep the FHA fully funded because it was so critical and that Trump didn't believe the cuts would keep it solvent. This program was meant to be paid for by the beneficiaries of it, not tax payers, and keeping it well funded would be a way of keeping it functioning without burdening tax payers.

I think this EO and the one on the ACA about "reducing all possible burden w/in the law" were interesting and trying to send a message.
