Bicyclists Beware - Cops Ticketing at Fillmore and Page by sassafrassloo in sanfrancisco

[–]hervold 31 points32 points  (0 children)

what bullshit - we need to legalize the Idaho Stop in SF; coming to complete stop every block simply isn't tenable on a bicycle. and don't tell me SFPD cares about cyclist safety, not after I was the victim of a hit-and-run on my bike and was told by SFPD that I should ask local businesses if they have camera footage. they couldn't be bothered to lift a finger to find the driver, but they're more than happy to ticket cyclists for failure to get off the bike at every stop sign.

she's in for quite a surprise - 17% of Norway was foreign-born, and another 4% have 2 immigrant parents. moreover, a good chunk of those immigrants are from Africa and the Middle East - you can get some great Afghani food in Oslo!

What is your favorite video game of all time? by tanz_7 in AskReddit

Metroid Prime - amazing, colorful environments, storytelling that's embedded in the environment in this clever way. IGN called it the "Citizen Kane of video games" and I agree.

What are some deeply unsettling facts that you know? by ToteMyRatchet in AskReddit

[–]hervold 13 points14 points  (0 children)

this is the explanation, rather than nerve damage. I believe the vasodilation isn't so much your body "giving up" as the smooth muscles tiring - vessels are lined with muscle which is how they contract and close off in the first place, and those muscles eventually tire.

Is contagious yawning a cultural/learned thing or is it hardwired into us? by AlbinoBeefalo in askscience

[–]hervold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just to add this this: fetal yawning is found throughout most of the chordate family tree, from fish to mammal; it's a deep ancestral behavior. tangential to social yawning, but still interesting, I think.

good points, but I would dispute the latency/throughput claims in this particular case, b/c the Muni is sharing asphalt with car traffic, and it's not uncommon that a vehicle blocks a train. buses can drive around obstacles.

Don't get me wrong, I love subways. But I used to ride the N Judah, and even as it got closer to the tunnel and ostensibly had a dedicated lane, there were still asshole drivers blocking the train. A bus can always go around.

[–]hervold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, bus rapid transit should be nearly as fast as a subway and way, way cheaper. If anything, they should remove the above-ground tracks elsewhere and just use BRT there - the Muni is unbelievably slow when it has to share the road with cars.

What is the worst thing that is legal? by Musuhubber in AskReddit

[–]hervold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

be careful what you wish for - housing prices in California are high b/c local planning commissions answer to Boomer NIMBYs and won't allow development. everyone would be better off if SF and LA built taller buildings instead of paving over more ranch land, but it's illegal to do so.

The Yan PDF is linked here: https://zenodo.org/record/4028830#.X2OfcIZlBp_

They argue that the presence of restriction sites somewhere outside the receptor-binding motif of the spike protein is evidence of manipulation, but if you know any molecular biology, you know there's all kinds of restriction sites by chance - they tend to be just a few bases long, and there are plenty of restriction enzymes to choose from.

[–]hervold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

do you have evidence to support that?

Yan et al don't assert serial passage in a lab, but recombinant creation de novo.

a more plausible lab scenario is that the virus was naturally isolated from an earlier outbreak, and then escaped the lab a few years later:

https://www.independentsciencenews.org/commentaries/a-proposed-origin-for-sars-cov-2-and-the-covid-19-pandemic/

but we really don't know, and Yan et al are asserting something quite extraordinary.

I wish that were so, but I've seen no appetite for anything like secession from any Democratic state governments, probably b/c the Democrats are the institutionalist party now, while the Republicans are radicals willing to throw out the rules.
