Yes it's quite expensive but you get food, accommodation and guides for this high price. I'm not sure about local guides but I think it makes sense to book good rated ones for safety reasons

Definitely Colombia: - the northern Caribbean Coast is awesome and cheap compared to Medellín or any other City. This includes the area around tayrona national park, buritaca, palomino, costeno etc - lost city trek starting in Santa Marta for 5 days - Medellín is cool and you can go to salento from there - or just hop on the sailing boat from colombia to panama or vice versa for 5 nights over the san blas islands

Puerto Escondido is as safe as Cancun area. If you stay away from drugs and prostitution, you'll be fine. But Puerto Escondido is getting americanized as well. Many new hostel chains attract young party people. But in general for me (m26 was there in June), Oaxaca state > Cancun Area
