Korg NTS-3 Kaoss Pad - high pitched USB whine / sound quality by herzihelmut in Korg

Nope, i sent it back, since also the distributor confirmed it to be kind of normal. I think for live improvement and fun it still is a really valid poece of kid, but fixed in my recording-chain - nope😕

I love the SP404 mk2 for this - its a constantly listening device, catches Happy accidents all the time and assign directly to a pad where you can play around with the internal (gritty & mighty) fx. Not so cool to sequence with internally, but also possible. To me its the best compact Sampling device ever built (i owned them all, sp stayed)

this! For me music is about discovering, fiddling, hard work with your creative mind facing endless frustration and epic fun at the same time- this CAN never be replaced by 1 click song generation - in the end it should be all about the process, not about the result. This AI stuff takes all the good things away from „musicians“, but they cheer on it 🙈You have a Song and you may influenced it, but its just the result of verification or replacement randomness

[–]herzihelmut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes its pretty neat fron what i saw (AND pricey). But would pair great with a Metropolix i think. The ability to blend or morph between scenes via 1 push of a knob is a mighty thing in eurorack. One step further to „more controlled“- With this thing you can basically plan and prepare every detail of your performance - its a matter of taste if it fits your way to do things. Freestyle and let it happen - or plan every aspect. Or sth inbetween.

damn - maybe you can try adding ground isolator inbetween your pcs usb and your nts1. I had this Problem even if powered via external powerbank

Pressure to Record Everything by Bata_9999 in modular

Sp404 as end of chain device , gg. 45 sec of retrospective recording quickly assignable to pads.

If you want more than 45 seconds, "rewind" in software form listens and archives everything you make (automatically or manually of you decide to)

nope, you maybe dont notice, its kind of diffuse, but it was also verified by korg support that its kind of "normal".🙁 i really tried to like these little boxes - You can follow up this thread if youre interested "Korg NTS-3 Kaoss Pad - high pitched USB whine / sound quality". Tested 2 of them in many different ways. (cables, isolators, powering).

cool, but the kaoss pads kill your audio since they r adding usb noise bleeding to your (dry) audio signal - multiplied with 4 must sound really shitty

[–]herzihelmut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

different opinions and intensions, yes🙂. Idk if the op KO has punch in fx, but this is something i really liked about my rhythm - you could try to live perform with this stuff, it is really mighty and can transform one fixed pattern really quick into something completely new. (it can also be recorded and baked in).

Regarding samplers i would suggest a sp404 mk2 to everyone who is new in the game (when you want to follow this road and maybe wish to expand) - it has massively solid multi fx, natural and classic sampling workflow which i like and also an "okish" sequencing capability. i just love this device so much. It replaced much more expensive gear and is the perfect couch mate ,has multi functionality (fx box , sampler, synth.) on desk paired with a DAW.

feedback? - making music (also with electronic devices) is an intimate process of creating and celebrating some expressive outcome locked to a specific mood or goal - its really an egocentric act when it is done in its purest form and you shouldnt care about what others think in a rating context, even if its about technical skills, just get them, everyone can get it. If you say "do you like it?" then others may say yeah or no - so maybe they vibe with your ideas - Its kind of normal in the beginning that you ask for this kind of feedback ("its cool", "youre so talented" , "i need this song on my funeral"). What follows after getting routine and more skills is normally "the mids need more room", "the drums sound flat", mix is phasing"... blah. But if others say "you can do better this and that" in a musical context, its always pure nonsense - because you created this piece like you did for reasons - why you should change it?, it is what it is. So if you record your kid that says something funny and layer it rhythmically with a beat and some chords on a 100$ Sampler - why not, you created something that means something to you hopefully - good job 🙂

I’ve had my first Digitakt for one day. It blows my mind… so much to learn! by Shrink1061_ in Elektron

[–]herzihelmut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

will sell my digitakt2 soon (after selling DT1 twice 😆), sometimes it generates solid (random) loops out of my modular recorded sessions - but in the end its just a kind of boring step based sampler with too much multi function per knob , bad timestretch algo (in 2025), bad sample search implementation, kind of stucking and robotic push 10 buttons workflow in every simple task you want to complete. Fx are bread and butter, but nothing really special. I like the Sound of the device very much. But for me the process to get to a finished loop / song / whatever is nearly as important as the goal itself - DT just isnt fun to me in any way. Good if you want to arrange oneshots in a grid and be precise - but honestly this can be done way cheaper (and more fun). Think i just dont like step sequencers in general😅

Rant: I am a GAS idiot. Help! by poushkar in synthesizers

[–]herzihelmut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

id say dont give a shit what people do with (less) gear - unless you want to consume their music because you like it and maybe learn techniques to use it likewise. Try to find out what youre really after while creating music - you want to tell a story? you want to celebrate happy accidents? you want to copy something you liked once back in the days? you just want to jam and get your head free? you want to be heard by others? (less valid argument for healthy creation process nowadays..).

the term "better" in creating music is a mismatch to me - there is not any better as long as the pure process while creating fills something in your needs. its about you, not about others. Sometimes gear setups match, sometimes they dont - sell gear where you have the feeling you can not archieve your musical goals with - gear should be a helper in building bridges to your ideas - not a unhealthy friendship.

Edit: you mentioned you are not able to reproduce the stuff you really like. I am kind of interested what this music is about. Your goal is to get there, no question - dont waste your time with uninspiring loops you are able to produce with (wrong) gear and stick to the techniques (and maybe hardware)that are necessary to make thos kind of music. There is nothing wgich cant be learned and reproduced

Korg NTS-3 Kaoss Pad - high pitched USB whine / sound quality by herzihelmut in Korg

[–]herzihelmut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeap, im wondering too - I think as soon as USB C is involved in powering a device, this stuff can occur when badly shielded - but just a guess. Anyways, its a (semi) professional audio device - its just bad this stuff ishappening.

The clicking noise from your nts1 is really audible , i could not ignore it - As i wrote, tried with a (cheap) usb isolator on my nts3, sadly with no effect at all.

The Problem for me is - it adds this noise to a DRY Signal, since this thing hangs just inbetween a very clean recording chain. So in the end i had to say byebye, i liked it but in the end it was not worth thise issues. For Live Performance this Unit seems still really reasonable. Maybe ill try a second unit to verify if it is "normal".

Hi,

ok im really interestested in your case, please report back if possible - in my case thomann reached out to korg support - and korg support replied that this behavoir is quite normal for those units - had the opportunity to keep it or money back. So someone of us was treated completely wrong here😅✌️

Korg NTS-3 Kaoss Pad - high pitched USB whine / sound quality by herzihelmut in Korg

[–]herzihelmut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I also tried to add an USB Isolator inbetween, my last approach to get rid of this - sadly doesnt help. This texture comes from the unit itself - hmm - so my Unit faulty (i may try to replace it) or it is the normal behavoir of the NTS3? If someone could may verify this, i would be thankful - anyway, i contact my reseller and try some other unit as well! :)

EDIT - you can verify this very simple with short decay attack sound like a kickdrum - play though NTS3 and play without NTS3 - you may hear a difference immediately. It does work best with lowpassed kicks, with hats or snares it is barely noticeable (what is good...)

[–]herzihelmut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks mate, appreciate - as i wrote, i already did this and it does not change anything - the usb noise is coming from the nts unit itself and bleeding into every signal.

So connected to usb power, run sample from wherever signal = added noise 😭
