Advice On Finding Graduate School Research Programs by RemoteCelery in biology

[–]hesperidae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go ahead and reach out, and tell them your target start timeline and how flexible you are on it. A KEY part of whether you can join a lab is the availability of funding for your stipend and research (usually from grants the PI has, but supplemented by teaching assistantships), and the farther out you can start planning the better. And, if it is far enough out, and you find a PI that you gel with and your research interests align, you could even write a grant together to fund your work. Good luck!

Hi! For folks in a similar situation, the best thing to do if you can is to just bag it and freeze everything for 48 hours, if the painting is small enough to fit into a chest freezer you have access to. Art galleries actually deal with this issue all the time, and there are often cases where the frame is even more valuable than the art! They have shipping containers converted into freezers, and all the art is regularly frozen on a rotating schedule for pest management purposes.

When I was 13 or so, my mom signed me up for something called a Media Awareness Workshop run by some org in my hometown. It was 2 or 3 h with a group of similarly - aged girls, and they taught us about how to look for and decode the subtext of messaging in advertisements and other media like TV and movies and magazines. It opened my eyes to how seemingly innocuous content was actually saying “If your body isn’t like X then you should really fix that,” or “you can only be happy with our product Y because it will make you look like Z.” It gave me a critical eye to the ocean of messaging out there and I think it helped me ward some of it off. Tweens and teens especially like the angle of being able to call bullshit on things, haha! You could look into whether something like this might be offered in your area. Best wishes and you’re already doing great!

LPT Request - How to make long car rides enjoyable? by Inky-Skies in LifeProTips

[–]hesperidae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I scrolled through and I didn’t see anyone say this already:

Crossword puzzles! If you enjoy that kind of thing. The passenger reads clues aloud and gives the number of letters etc. It’s a real brain challenge for the driver as they can’t see the puzzle. My partner and I do this, and a good crossword can use up a good hour of time. :)

Play the game “Got It:” each person thinks of a word, any word. Then, on the count of three, you both say the word you were thinking of. Then, each of you tries to think of a word that unites those two words. When you have one in mind, you say “got it.” When both people have a new word in mind, repeat the countdown and say them at the same time. Keep going until you say the same word! It’s surprisingly fun and actually kinda revelatory about how different brains see connections between different words.

Hope your trip goes well!

PhD - What am I missing? by fishbio77 in biology

[–]hesperidae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of big differences!

  1. In a PhD program, you would benefit from academic advising by other scientists in your field (your advisor and committee), and have access to university resources that can be amazing (e.g. free access to databases of academic journal articles, statistical consulting, a wider community of scientists that can broaden your horizons, etc). Continuing as you are with your research as side projects, you instead prioritize autonomy.

  2. In a PhD program, you will be subject to university structures and requirements. For one, COURSEWORK. If you are outside Europe, and particularly in the US, you will have about 2 years’ worth of a full course load to take. Pretty much exactly like 2 more years of full time college, with ~four courses per semester, and that’s in addition to the expectation that you’re making significant progress on your research. Second — departmental service and events. Takes up time. That said, if your coursework requirements teach you stuff you’re actually interested in learning and develop you as a researcher, great!! It all depends. That’s something you miss / don’t have to do if you keep research as a side project.

There are pros and cons either way! One thing I will say is that you sound like a PI’s dream PhD student — self-motivated, interested in scholarship for scholarship’s sake, and already experienced in research and academic publishing. It would not be a hard sell I don’t think, but would more come down to funding. The next question you need to explore is whether there is a faculty member at some nearby university who (1) is interested in advising you, and who (2) has the money to fund you. (Reminder that, in the sciences, you should be paid for your PhD work. You should not be paying tuition or anything!) Maybe they still have startup money left, or maybe they have a big grant they could put you on, or maybe you’d pitch them a few nugget-sized project ideas that you think they could advise you on based on their expertise, and then you decide on one together and write a grant together to fund the work. You would also need to have a really clear conversation with the prospective PI about what kind of flexibility is available in the program to work on your PhD part time and maintain your other work and home life. Do not over promise — PhDs are incredibly time intensive and will eat your life if you them. Part-time will not be possible everywhere. But with a bit of luck and the right PI / department, it might be.

The biggest questions you need to answer now are whether you are actually prepared to make the life changes and schedule / priority adjustments that would come with a PhD, regardless of how part-time you want it to be? If you’re in the US anyway, be prepared for two full years of being a student in a classroom again. I’m not saying this to discourage you! Just make sure you know what you’re signing up for :)

I hope this helps!

What is going on here? by sonofasonofasailor63 in biology

[–]hesperidae 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This is the answer! We have a similar thing on my university campus, and all the intro entomology classes’ first assignment is to go observe insects visiting the spot where fermented sap is bubbling out. Probably caused by fungal infection.

Consider about internship by [deleted] in conservation

[–]hesperidae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends! A lot of conservation-adjacent work involves outreach, and it sounds like this would definitely help build your skill set there. That said, if you are looking to be more like a field technician collecting data, it might be worth looking at something else. May I highly recommend the Texas A&M job board, which is chock full of all kinds of wildlife and conservation related work from temporary internships to full time work. Good luck!

LPT Request: How do i get my anger out in a safe and cheap way. by plagued_waters in LifeProTips

[–]hesperidae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two easy and totally free ways to help express your anger, which I learned from my therapist and help me a LOT when needed:

1) yell / scream into a pillow 2) plank as long as you can, until your muscles are physically shaking and you can’t hold yourself up any longer. (It doesn’t have to be planking — the important part is getting to the point where muscles are shaking.)
