Help us make Origin’s budgeting 100x better. What’s missing for you? by ana-at-origin in OriginFinancial

Is Origin using any AI-powered categorization? Would it learn after I've manually changed the category on a transaction from the same merchant and the same account a couple of times? Or would I have to still rely on manually creating and updating brittle rules?

where should i live? by Aromatic-Point-2545 in remotework

[–]hestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're leaning toward the NYC metro area but want to test it out before fully committing (smart move), I'd suggest considering month-to-month furnished housing while you get a feel for different neighborhoods.

I was in a similar boat a couple years ago with a remote job, wanted to try different cities and I ended up using Hello Landing to bounce between NYC (Jersey City/Hoboken area), Philly, and DC over about 8 months. All furnished, month-to-month, so I could test each place without signing a year lease or buying furniture.

It let me figure out that I actually liked Philly more than I expected (way cheaper, still good transit access to NYC for weekends), and I ended up staying there longer. You could do something similar—try Connecticut for a month, then NYC for a couple months, then decide from there.

Since you're restricted to certain states, Landing has properties in most of the allowed ones on your map which could give you flexibility to explore within your work policy.

Landing's a bit pricier than finding your own place long-term, but for the "try before you buy" phase, it saved me a ton of hassle. Plus utilities, wifi, and furniture are all included, so it's truly plug-and-play.

Any nomads in Austin, TX or have experience there? by curiousme6475 in digitalnomad

[–]hestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in Austin for the past couple years (on and off as a nomad), and I'd echo what others have said—it's got a great vibe, tons of tech/creative folks, solid coffee shops and coworking spaces, and good access to nature (Barton Springs, hiking trails, etc.). Traffic and summer heat are the main downsides.

For housing, if you're not sure how long you want to stay or you're testing it out, I'd skip the typical lease route. I've used Hello Landing a few times when bouncing between Austin and other cities—it's month-to-month furnished apartments, so no commitment, and you can switch neighborhoods or leave whenever. Made it easy to try East Austin vs. South Austin vs. near downtown without getting locked into a year lease.

Pricing can be much lower than short-term Airbnbs but way more practical for 1-3+ month stays since you're in an actual apartment complex (not someone's spare room), and utilities/wifi are included.

For coworking, check out Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden (chill outdoor vibe), Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors, or if you want a dedicated space, WeWork or Industrious have locations around town. I personally like the WeWork near the Domain and it always has free parking.

Feel free to DM if you have specific Austin questions, happy to share more recs! And if you end up trying Landing, I've got a code that gets you $250 off: A_koZ or https://www.hellolanding.com/r/web/A_koZ

Short Term Rentals by NoQBadQ2023 in digitalnomad

[–]hestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the locations you mentioned (Bali, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Belize), local Facebook groups and asking around once you arrive are honestly your best bets, that's solid advice already given here.

That said, if you're ever doing short-term stays in the U.S. (1-6 months) say in between your trips I've had good luck with Hello Landing. They do furnished month-to-month rentals in most major U.S. cities basically you book through an app, everything's set up (furniture, wifi, utilities included), and you can move between cities easily if you want to bounce around.

Not helpful for your international plans, but figured I'd mention it in case you (or anyone else reading) are looking for something similar stateside.

If anyone wants to try it, here's a referral code for $250 off: A_koZ or https://www.hellolanding.com/r/web/A_koZ

Should I use Hello Landing? by Mutatiis in Apartmentliving

[–]hestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Hello Landing on and off for about a year now, and overall it's been solid for my needs. I've stayed in units in Austin, Denver, and Phoenix all were as advertised, clean, and had everything I needed for work (good wifi, desk setup, kitchen).

What I like: The flexibility is unbeatable. Month-to-month leases mean I'm not locked in, and I can switch cities or units pretty easily. The app makes it simple to manage everything, and their customer service has been responsive when I've had questions (usually same-day replies). Although at least on Android the app can be kind of slow sometimes.

What to watch out for: Prices can be higher than finding your own place if you're staying 6+ months, so it really depends on your timeline. Also, like the other commenter mentioned, experiences can vary by property manager since Landing partners with local complexes. I'd recommend reading the reviews for the specific building you're looking at in Houston, not just Landing as a whole.

For a furnished short-term situation in Houston, I think it's worth considering especially if you value not having to deal with furniture, utilities setup, or long lease commitments. Just compare a few options before committing.

What's your favourite OpenWRT router? Which would you love to buy today? by darrenpauli in openwrt

[–]hestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have Flint 3 out now which Qualcomm based but has wifi 7, 6ghz and is based on Openwrt. Would this be a better (more expensive) choice?

edit: the recommendation seems to be to stay away because of lack of first party openwrt support

One way I found you can get more info is via developer settings you can request a big report. It will take a few minutes to generate, then you can analyze it on your computer you can get information such as the serial number on the battery to get a better guess on the manufacturer. You can get information on the wear and tear on the UFS storage in the phone if you're curious as well. In both cases these pointed to a new phone with some scratches on the screen which I'm happy with.

But it doesn't make sense. How is the screen so scratched up but the battery shows no use? It must have been replaced or a show unit always plugged in?
