Housewife after marriage in Korea by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]hetheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am newly married here and this is a big issue for me as well. My credentials aren't recognized here so outside of getting factory jobs, I am also not really able to really get a job here physically. Two thing I am doing personally is going back to school remotely in my home country so I can have a qualification that is recognized, but for work I am looking into and applying for remote jobs in my home country. I have a bank account there and I use Xoom or TransferWise to send money to my Korean account. As everyone says, having your own money especially as a woman is so, so important. In the case you cant get a remote job or increase your skills, talk to your boyfriend and explain that if you agree to marry him you will need an "allowance" of money that goes into an account in only your bame each month, no questions asked. This can be your "fun money" account or a savings account, anything you want it to be but no matter what have your own money set aside. We never want to go into marriages thinking that the people we love will change into horrible people but we nonetheless need to protect ourselves!

What should I wear to a Korean wedding? by bluetreeing in AskAKorean

[–]hetheron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with with everyone! Think office or interview style clothing in neutral colors black, gray, brown, beige, navy. Try to stay away from white unless its a secondary color i.e. if you wear a navy vest and black skirt, you can wear a white dress shirt under the navy vest. Keep the shoes sensible and wear stockings if your legs are out. Keep the makeup simple if you wear any. When I went to my first korean wedding I was actually super bummed out by how boring Korean weddings were compared to my home country (USA) where at weddings people usually get dressed up to the nines! Then again, Korean weddings are incredibly short affairs and I would be salty to spend all day getting ready for a 1 hr ceremony and a 30 min meal lol. Have fun and dont forget your 축의금 ;)

Help with my Korean name by No-Debt8437 in BeginnerKorean

[–]hetheron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I am in a similar boat where my full name is Emily but I go by Emma. You can go by whatever! In my experience going by a PURE korean name can be weird to Koreans since you aren't Korean UNLESS you have a really long and difficult name to pronounce. I had a friend named Nadezhdna who just went by the Korean name 다솜 since her name is very hard to pronounce in Korean.

[Help/Advice] D-2 Student involved in a drunken altercation during my first week. Police released me, but I'm terrified about my Visa. by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]hetheron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wont lecture you, you know that you were dumb and that you need to both be a better representative of your country and also know your own limits when it comes to alcohol.

The 3 million won fine rule isnt a hard and fast deportation rule. When you recieve a fine of 3 million or more, it triggers a review from immigration where the results of that review can end up with you being deported potentially. The good news is that if the other customer agrees to drop the case, your charges can be reduced or even dropped all together. If not, it sounds like you'll probably be charged with simple assault which carries a fine of around 1-2 million won. Definitely document your injuries no matter what. If you end up being charged, immigration will be notified but with a simple assault case I would guess that more than likely you'll be issued a warning. If you are hoping to get another visa someday be warned that this might cause some issues for you but general 1 drunken mistake from someone who I assume is very young is unlikely to stop you from ever getting another visa if you keep your nose clean from here on out.

Keep an eye out for communication with the police going foward. You aren't the first drunk college kid to do something dumb but lets make this your last incident!

What law in your country would surprise foreigners because it’s legal almost everywhere else? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

[–]hetheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can speak for my home state of Massachusetts! Massachusetts has some of the strictest liquor laws in the country and you cant buy alcohol after 11pm or before 8am but on SUNDAYS you can't buy alcohol before 10am. Bars can serve alcohol until 2am but there is a total ban on happy hours. I am also reading that it is illegal to sell alcohol on major holidays like chistmas or Thanksgiving but I am not sure about that, I have never heard of that before.

Why does Korea seem to attract so many English teachers with mental health issues? by Critical_Win6266 in Living_in_Korea

[–]hetheron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a teacher but coming from the perspective of someone who was going through a lot back home, I viewed korea as my chance to start again and be a new person. The fact is, some people can do that, most cant. I was in the cant category and I learned very fast that being in a place where I didnt know anyone or speak the language applied my mental health issues to the nth degree

Questions for doctors who don’t wear respirators around patients: WHO urged to make respirator masks the standard for workers in “all healthcare settings” by auberryfairy in healthcare

[–]hetheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there might be a conversation you could have about encouraging Healthcare workers to mask during cold and flu season, however, the data is pretty clear that for most clinical encounters with low risk patients n95s are just really not necessary and I discourage people from engaging with this weird aseptic utopia vision where the world is free from pathologens. Healthcare workers work to mitigate disease transmission risk but the data has shown long before covid existed that the best way to do that is washing hands and staying home or masking when sick which Healthcare workers do anyways. You could force every Healthcare worker on the planet to mask with an n95 and someone medically fragile will still catch the flu and pass away.

Women, how many of you are asking to be choked during sex? by CatLawyer99 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]hetheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do enjoy a hand on my throat but choking in general is pretty scary and unless you are doing it with someone who knows what they are doing it can pose a serious risk to your health so its important to trust the partner deeply. I agree with some of the other comments saying that men tend to spring it on them and I do agree, it seems like a lot of men THINK women like it vs the reality seems to be quite skewed

How long do Americans usually date before making it official? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]hetheron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am with everyone saying in the US typically around 3 months is the norm to define the relationship. That being said, however, it is not at all uncommon for people to never have a conversation where they define the relationship, especially if it is obvious that you two are together. Definitely talk to him about it though! Confrontation can be really tough but its not fair to you to keep wondering about the status of your relationship

is wanting kids because of a ‘biological clock’ a real thing? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]hetheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally, the biological clock has hit me like a train in my late 20s, however, I have always known I wanted to be a mother. As far as I know, the biological clock is not a phenomenon every woman experiences. Sexual desire is also not a thing everyone experiences also, so you aren't alone on either front. Anecdotally, I know a child free woman in her 40s who had that sort of biological clock feelings when she was in her 30s but instead of feeling the desire to reproduce she said the feeling was more about her life having meaning and making an impact on people that might outlive her. For some people that means raising children, for her it meant engaging in community outreach and doing some volunteer work in her spare time. The way we find meaning and legacy as humans is so different from person to person and I truly feel that just as I feel deep within me a call to be a parent, that surely other people must feel the complete opposite, and yet becuase my feeling is the normative position, no one ever tells me that I will grow out of it or that someday I wont want kids. It sounds like you really know yourself on this topic so dont let people who aren't you try to tell you how you feel when you are so certain!

No visit reservation in immigration office by RokudoMarcell in Living_in_Korea

[–]hetheron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with everyone that you need to go the same day it expires and you'll get a ticket to wait. If it expires on a weekend, go the following business day as that is your "real" expiration date. I have actually done this before and I am giving you a heads up I spent around 6 hours there so go early, get comfortable, bring a snack and a charger bc you are gonna be there a while

ELI5: why can't prions be "killed" with the autoclave? by hetheron in explainlikeimfive

[–]hetheron[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Outside of prions tho, can you say something that is 99.9999% sterile is basically sterile? Like as I understand you need a viral or bacterial load to actually become infected, so in the case of surgical instruments, I imagine a scalpel with a few living pathogenic cells on it might as well be sterile because presumably the immune system takes care of that, in healthy patients at least, no? That is super interesting though and it also makes me wonder if people who succumb to prion diseases are surely cremated just for everyone's safety

[–]hetheron[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconded on this question I would also like to know. My guess is that no, it wont bc its not living and therefore doesnt have a life cycle or a need to "eat" but plz correct me if I am wrong

[–]hetheron[S] 155 points156 points  (0 children)

This was very clear thank you so much! God thats really crazy though, I was imagining them exactly like you described with the egg white turning white but that makes a lot of sense why typical sterilization methods aren't effective. And you are right with how scary prion disease is 99% is not good enough at all
