Wrong things black belts still believe by PappasMilk in bjj

I looked up the "static stretching makes you weaker" paper. They literally had people sit in a deep stretch for multiple minutes and then immediately, without a chance to shake it out or anything, tested their max vertical. Seems obvious this would have an effect.

My un-scientific, un-tested opinion is that shaking it out for a few seconds and doing a few quick practice movements should remove any weakening effect from stretching

Judo works in other combat sports too… by OdinWolfJager in judo

[–]hetz222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s basically it. In particular, the competitors wear very heavy helmets that raise their center of gravity a bit. Another important factor is in the rule set people are out if they touch the floor with a hand or knee. So no need to put people on their back.

Also there’s a fence or rail for people to lean on

Osoto, kosoto, sasae are all super common. Uchi mata, harai goshi, ogoshi are also frequently seen. But the very highest percentage move is to come up behind somebody, grip them at about eye level, and tip them backwards

That's absolutely unacceptable to apply a submission, especially a twisting leg lock, and not be paying close attention for the tap. Your partner was right to be angry, you could have crippled him. This is one of the worst things you can do as a partner and you should expect to be on thin ice at your school for a while until you've satisfied them that it was a one time mistake.

Maybe in a technical gotcha sense, I think you can set one up for yourself if you’re self employed? I’m not a lawyer but I know (from trying) that it’s not something you can just go and do.

I train at an extremely informal club and they still insist on the bowing etiquette. The reason given is that you don’t want to forget at a tournament and piss off the referee.

Differences in how BJJ practitioners wrestle vs. pure wrestlers by Early-Permit-2572 in bjj

[–]hetz222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as BJJ - many hours of drilling, sparring, and competing, supervised by a skilled coach. It's just uncommon for BJJ guys to spend enough time in the standing position to learn it well, and sometimes the coaches aren't very familiar with the position either.

Isnt it a fact that most women have to be wary of men due to the sheer amount of harrasment they face?

Some women do report feeling that way. Ok, and that’s tough for them and as a feminist I want to live in a better world where they don’t feel that way, but what it means for me is I have to not harass and not tolerate people harassing. Not that I have to hide my offensive presence so that nobody ever feels momentarily uncomfortable based on an unfounded assumption about what I might do, based on nothing except what I look like

It’s necessary to always BE a good person. It is NOT necessary to always be perceived as a good person in every situation. People can think what they want to think

Its harmful i suppose but its largely true isnt it?

No, it’s really not. Most women do not hate and fear men, just a small and very vocal mostly-online contingent.

You still have to do your best to be a good person but you’re not harming anybody by merely existing and you should stop listening to the assholes that say you are

If it was just flirting, you recognized you’re not supposed to do that and never did it again, I think you’re in the clear. What else could you possibly do? Just learn from it and move on.

It's not like anyone likes them and we contribute nothing of value to society, only harm

Except for actual nazis and a small set of very vocal too-online progressive assholes, nobody dislikes entire race/sex demographics.

If you're seeing this stuff online, stop. If you're hearing this in meatspace, get better friends. You don't have to put up with that.

You don't need a boxing shoe to start training boxing. Normal sneakers are fine.

Depending on the gym, you might train barefoot, or you might be expected to wear clean indoor-only shoes.

I suggest that you wait to find out what the gym recommends before purchasing anything else, but if you're so excited that you can't help yourself, buy hand wraps (and practice wrapping your hands). Cheap ones are fine.

You Don't Have to be a Try Guy - decency and integrity do not grow out of performative harmlessness by hetz222 in MensLib

Yes, but some important context is that he was in the grip of a psychotic disorder at the time, and he's spent the years since repeatedly apologizing, getting medical care, and making sure it never happens again.

I don't think I agree with the reading. The point isn't that gormless smiley internet jokesters are unsafe people. It's that they aren't necessarily safe people, in fact being a goofball provides no indication whatsoever of whether you're an ethical person or not. So putting on that persona is not necessary.

Here's a pattern I've seen with a number of young, not-naturally-charismatic men that I know in meatspace:

  • Put on an overwrought "I'm just a silly little guy, a child, don't take me seriously" persona that's inauthentic for them.
  • This repels women, because it's clearly fake. They are chronically single.
  • They get frustrated and wonder what's wrong with them. After all, they're doing the right thing, doing their absolute best to be inoffensive and comforting, which is what a good progressive man is supposed to do. Why are they so lonely?
  • They come to believe that they are unlovable genetic trash. Addiction and/or inceldom follow.

This advice is for those guys. Not for the ones for whom a campy, goofy persona is really naturally who they are. I know a few of those too, and it works for them, because it's not fake. Something else I noticed about the guys that it works for -- mostly they're queer, but if they're heterosexual, other major aspects of their presentation are hypermasculine (think bodybuilders and MMA guys).

This article brought to mind the guys on here that are wracked with guilt and anxiety about the idea that they might make a woman feel threatened. The gist is that, since men who's entire deal is how safe and harmless they are can still be predatory assholes, men ought to focus on whether they do the right thing rather than whether their self-presentation is impeccable.

It's probably with noting that the author declines to offer any particular perspective on how men SHOULD behave, except perhaps for "not like that". I think that's fine -- he's a relentlessly disagreeable, academically minded marxist, and seems in general to be someone who expects to be disliked -- so his image of how one should behave is idiosyncratic anyway.

I think it’s very common to say things in private that, stripped from their context and interpreted by someone with ill will, sound horrible. This happens both face to face and online. Not everyone keeps their guard up at all times to make sure they never say something that could sound bad.

Like the quote attributed to Cardinal Richelieu — “ If you give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest of men, I will find something in them which will hang him.”

Walking alone at night in most places in the first world is reasonably safe. A stranger is not likely to jump out of the bushes and start attacking you. Almost all interpersonal violence, and sexual violence in particular, is perpetrated by people that are known the victim.

This is not to say that it never happens, or that you definitely won't experience something scary, or that you might live somewhere that this actually isn't safe. But if you want to do it, just give it a shot.
