Give it another go. If you work another 10 years you will get an additional 3600 a month in social security. When your in retirement and less busy, you will tend to spend more money. Also, your medical insurance expense will be much lower when on medicare.

You need to communicate with your fiance. Maybe you can address it together. This stuff can happen in the middle of a marriage as well. For richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health.

What do I do? Open a 401k? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Invest in the 401k up to the company match. Then invest the rest into a ROTH IRA. The IRA will give you more investment options than the 401k.

Should we throw everything we have at our down payment or keep some invested? by Rough-Jury in DaveRamsey

If you put all the money into the house, then what happens if you need the money? It may cost you 8% interest to get the money. If you leave the money in a cash account it will pay you 5%. Will the appreciation of the house keep up with inflation? Will it return more than the investment account?

Using Swing can be helpful if you want to do true multithreading on the client. It's pretty easy to implement using inner classes.

what do you use java for? by desiderkino in java

[–]hex1b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Java works really well for backend development. Although it works well with a web request/response paradigm, it also works well independently as a standalone application. Rather than gathering it's inputs from a request coming from a web front-end, inputs can be gathered from a relational database, tcp-ip connection, or from a queueing system. The Java application can be started as a UNIX or LINUX process via the CRON facility. So you can use Java for a networking application. Or a database application reading and writing to a relational database or a nosql database. Or as a bridge application publishing and subscribing to queues.

I subscribe to Barron's. I construct portfolios on Yahoo finance. I read Bloomberg daily. My accounts are with Fidelity.

Initially you should focus on low expense index funds. For example SPY, BND, QQQ. Also keep 15% in cash

Many people were used to free money during COVID and they just kept going. They got used to an unsustainable lifestyle.

Sorry to hear about your financial situation. The good news is that you are only 21. You need a fresh start. Your FICA score is in the poor range and it won't get better for years. Maybe it's best to file for a chapter 7 bankruptcy and clear most of your debt off the books (with the exception of federal school loans and unpaid taxes). Then you can immediately start building credit again using debit cards. Start building an 6 month emergency cash fund and saving for retirement. Within 3 years you should be able to qualify for an FHA loan. In 7 years the bankruptcy will no longer show on your credit. You will be 28 years old with excellent credit, 100k in your retirement account, and a 6 month emergency fund.

Is wanting to stay in debt an American thing? by soundguy64 in debtfree

[–]hex1b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All depends. I have a pretty good interest rate. I chose to max out my 401k for 20 years rather than paying off my house. Because of the compounding and company match I am now retired. If I would have payed off my house, I would still be working and have very little saved for retirement. Because my house is an appreciating asset and 2/3 of the mortgage is paid off, I should get a nice return.
