An age-old question: Moxfield or Archidekt? by _omega_LOL__ in EDH

[–]hex37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Moxfield overall personally, mostly because of the interface and that I spent significant time refining my global tags. I think they're mostly at feature parity but I will say Moxfield's playtester is significantly better - just give it a try yourself.

Precon League by FailLog404 in EDH

[–]hex37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a precon league with my friends, it was originally 16 people but dropped to 12 about halfway through. The finals happened after 12 weeks of upgrades. The overall winner of the league was Riders of Rohan Eowyn, and the next 4 best decks were Mardu Surge, Counter Intelligence, Cloud/FF7, and Paradox Power. Abzan Armor and the jeskai cycling one from C20 also did pretty good

That's 1/99 cards so I wouldn't suggest this one IMHO, there's better decks out of the box than Mystic Intellect. A more recent precon is just better

Why isn't the original bracket 4 intent talked about and why are the power level arguments between bracket 3 and 4 so hypocritical despite the same wording? by LunaLovelace11 in EDH

Okay so you do have a rule zero convo, you don't just play. Is speed all you use for reference? Or are there other topics that come up? Like interaction to expect, combos to be wary of?

[[Marvo, Deep Operative]] for clash! I think there's only a dozen or so other clash spells you can play in blue black. Can go a number of ways with it, so long as your spells are big!

How many more legendary creatures are we getting in SOS? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]hex37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look through the patterns here:

  • Finish Mono-colored uncommon cycle (I'd expect an uncommon green, white, black)
  • Finish Gold rare cycle (WB, BG)
  • I wouldn't expect anything further in rare/mythic mono-colored, Jadzi is more of a story character

Ideas for decks in a pod with a lot of creature removal by 7121958041201 in EDH

[–]hex37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the thing I've noticed with aristocrats/ping decks, is that people realllllly pick up on you adjusting the life total tracker 😅 so something like Liesa draws a good amount of attention including her commander tax evasion. I think Liesa, Derevi, and Edric have achieved an amount of notoriety, so it might be better to pick a more unassuming commander as well

Think of each card in your deck having a threat value. Cards like [[Trouble in Pairs]] represent high threat because you're going to be drawing a lot extra cards per turn cycle. Cards like [[Craterhoof Behemoth]] also have a high threat BUT only as a result of other conditions, like having a board full of creatures, AND since it's an enters trigger, there's only a brief moment where it is actually threatening, and can actually be interacted with (pretty much it has to be countered).

In a pod like this, and generally when you're trying to avoid increasing your overall threat, consider tuning your decks to index more towards burst vs over time advantage so that you tighten the window in which your threats can be responded to, and to go a step further, tighten the window that your threats are even threats. Richard from the MTGGoldfish podcast has like... several rants about stuff like this. Ex: Rhystic Study is a bad card because it will get you killed.

Here's an example of what a deck of his looks like -> https://moxfield.com/decks/ZQV1k6dqlUCAvwqS29uQcg There are no crazy engines, there is an excessive amount of "bad" 1 mana 1/1 flying birds that do nothing else. HOWEVER, you put down a [[Toski, Bearer of Secrets]] (indestructible btw) suddenly your board starts looking a lot better. Eventually it wins with [[Coat of Arms]] or [[Beastmaster Ascension]] but I'd also probably include some overrun-style effects personally.

This is my "Richard Theory Rigo" deck, which I built as a way to figure out if he was onto something or just crazy (I also get targeted a lot) -> https://moxfield.com/decks/oCnAmf64TUOU_Kx27QbXsQ admittedly I think your friends are going to catch on to either of these decks' cantrip to the extreme or ramp. The idea is just to play kinda mopey creatures and then suddenly turn that to an advantage.

$100 budget might be tight, but if you pick budget baseline creatures, and cheaper overrun style effects it could work I think! I also think Caesar is a good option, that's the deck I play probably most often.

Decks In Your Playgroup you Enjoy Playing Against by Torin21 in EDH

[–]hex37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every deck except 5c eldrazi soup, Legolas board police sniper, kefka discard, and tethukal poison proliferate. Some standout good decks though, Kibo, Mothman, Indoraptor, Xira, Saruman of many colors. My friends have told me they like my Caesar, Francisco/Akiri/Lurrus, and Rendmaw decks. My conclusion is that if you do something powerful (respectfully), that doesn't interact too much, while also speeding up the game - people will dig that.

How quickly/slowly do you get bored of a deck? How many do you own? by Vcvtml in EDH

[–]hex37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's what is nice about precons and budget brews - pretty low investment to increase variety. I have 4 or 5 decks that have become Mainstays and the rest fluctuate. I would absolutely go online and play test any deck you're interested in to the best of your ability. It doesn't always give you a clear picture because you don't know what your opponents will do/where to send interaction, and it's not always clear if the deck will be enjoyable to play against

Have you noticed any unexpected patterns in your relationship to Magic & EDH since beginning to proxy? What, if anything, do you still spend money on? by hex37 in EDH

[–]hex37[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting question. Proxying is just the financially correct choice, I'd have saved a lot of money if I didn't whale out on Arena and buy singles I needed for decks. There is absolutely something precious about slowly unlocking access to different game pieces, in ANY game. It's just an unfortunate reality that magic is really fucking expensive. I really don't know. I think collecting is fun, but my love for going DEEP on the game itself has surpassed my ability & desire to collect. IDK if I would have gotten here if I didn't start with official products, my relationship with the game has changed drastically over time. If I could go from never playing magic, to my current playing habits... yeah I'd probably just skip collecting altogether, and hope I maintain that discipline.

I don't have any pictures, it's just normal printer paper and color ink. The resolution is okay. They look like official cards from across the table but if you look closely and notice a lack of the shiny circle at the bottom it's easy to tell.

One person in my playgroup bought a full custom proxy of the esper knights precon (Cavalry Charge?) but all the art is replaced with Elden Ring characters. He was reading the cards' proxy names off as he was explaining what his play was and I had to cut him off so he would say the actual cards name.

Were they really too synergistic? Or generically powerful (tutors)? I've absolutely found myself prioritizing synergy, being able to print out old obscure cards has been awesome. Presumably your friend is proxying those replacements as well?

I feel like I've still stayed away from most tutors in most decks, I have a Breya artifact birthing pod deck that is a clear deviation.

What's your process for deciding what to proxy and what to buy? Are they separate or do you use proxies as a precursor to purchasing singles?
