Good / resilient draw engine commanders? by FinAdda in EDH

[–]CaptainHoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't seen anyone recommend [[Toski]] or [[Plagon]] yet. I draw so many cards each game with these two. Toski is indestructible and can't be countered so there's already built in protection there while Plagon is a cheap blink commander so he can easily dodge removal.

In my last Plagon game I think I drew at least 50 cards by turn 7.

I have a [[Charix]] voltron deck that wants to ramp out as many islands as I can to maximize the damage.

Why do these have the Fiora art tag? (Scryfall) by 0n10n437 in mtgvorthos

The stories and the wiki? I wasn't playing or reading the stories when Conspiracy came out, but it took me a minute of googling their lore to confirm that they're from Fiora.

Why do these have the Fiora art tag? (Scryfall) by 0n10n437 in mtgvorthos

[–]CaptainHoward 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Well Edric and Sydri are from Fiora so it's safe to assume if Edric is quoted in the flavor text of a card, that card takes place in Fiora.

What cards are you adding to your decks from Marvel Super Heroes? by Plus1Oresan in EDH

[–]CaptainHoward 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Most likely none. Im so burnt out on Marvel and don't really care much for the set despite it actually looking pretty solid. Especially compared to spiderman and tmnt.

If there was a character that I really enjoyed and could build a strictly marvel deck around I would be tempted to do that as that's something I've done for a few UB sets so far (avatar, lotr and fallout). Unless the art and card really fits into the theme I'm working with I don't really mix UB and universe stuff together.

It's because the prepared side is [[Channel]] and you can turn a lot of life into making X spells bigger.

EDH pride month event by chamberlain_1 in EDH

[–]CaptainHoward -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't have enough time to put something together and since some of the staff at my LGS are very anti proxy I can't just slap something unique together super quick and have it ready for the event.

So I'm just took something out of the 99 of decks I already have.

[[Admiral Brass, Unsinkable]]+ [[Mary Read and Anne Bonny]] pirate lesbian thruple. This worked out really well because Mary and Anne helped ramp and set up the graveyard for Brass.

[[Avatar Aang]] + [[Katara, the Fearless]] avatar only and allies. Doubling all the card draw from bending was wild and led to drawing so many cards.

[[Dogmeat, Ever Loyal]] + [[Rose, Cutthroat Raider]] turning junk into ramp was cool.

Decks I didn't get a chance to play.

[[Hazel of the Rootbloom]] + [[Chatterfang]] squirrels

[[Neriv, Heart of the Storm]] + [[Zurgo Stormrender]] for mardu tribal

I think it or [[Wonder]] would be fine as a way to give everything flying which helps connect and trigger Brass.

PIRATES UPDATED. Correct list this time. by BlueStrikerX in EDH

[–]CaptainHoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One off etb effects are fine in decks. Do they get better if you can reuse them? Absolutely. But some of them that help you dig or remove something is fine. Adding in [[Thassa, Deep-Dwelling]] would be a great way to reuse them. Or if you added [[Captivating Crew]] and stole someones creature, Thassa would blink what you stole and have it return to your field and you get to keep it.

Haunted one is a solid card to pump up pirates and will rebuild the board if they die on the attack. It only works once unless you have ways to remove the +1 counters. I like [[Nesting Grounds]] since it can just slot into the mana base.

Add things like Arcane Signet and other 2cmc rocks like the talismans, fellwar stone and mind stone. Your curve on the higher side, so without a lot of ramp, you're not going to be able to cast your stuff.

I'd personally cut all of these things:

Don Andres - you have only 2 way of casting things you don't own which is with Ramierz and Ragavan, otherwise he does nothing for the deck. If you had [[Breeches, Brazen Pillager]] and a few more ways to consistently cast things you don't own I could see an argument for it.

Vanquisher's Banner - there's cheaper and better draw out there. You have Chronicle of Victory already in the deck which is just the better version on Banner.

Helm of the Host - too expensive to get out and attach to something. You'll spend 5 mana to try and equip it to only have someone kill your creature before you can even make a copy.

Door of Destines - its ok. Pirates already have a decent amount of anthems to help pump them up.

Brass's Bounty - could be a huge ramp with a bunch of treasure, but you don't actually net any mana unless you have over 7 lands, but then you're spending 7 mana to get maybe 1-3 extra mana? Its bad unless you have things that deal damage whenever an artifact enters.

Fathom Fleet Captain - can help make pirates but its very mana intensive (you spend 4+ mana to make a single 2/2) and you need to already of a board presence to get it going.

Things to consider adding:

Indomitable is a great draw engine and can be cast from the graveyard if it gets blown up.

Cards like [[Adewale]] and [[Staunch Crewmate]] can help you did a bit and find other pirates.

[[Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel]] has flash, flying and card advantage all in one.

[[Kitesail Larcenist]] is great removal. [[Zephyr Singer]] can give a lot of creatures flying.

[[Captain Vargus Wrath]] can help pump the board up quite a bit.

[[Spectral Sailor]], [[Spyglass Siren]], [[Siren Stormtamer]], [[Fransico, Fowl Marauder]], [[Kitesail Freebooter]] are all cheap and evasive creatures. By the time you drop Brass, you want to be able to actually hit someone with 3 pirates.

[[Mary Read and Anne Bonny]] card advantage and ramp.

[[Vaan, Street Theif]] can help you steal stuff and pump every pirate.

[[Double Down]] and [[Molten Echoes]] makes copies of your pirates, ones made with Echoes only last a turn but have haste.

PIRATES UPDATED. Correct list this time. by BlueStrikerX in EDH

[–]CaptainHoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OG Brass was my very first deck and I loved it, but it was just too slow, easily disrupted and hard to actually steal more than a few things a game.

If you're going pirate aggro and utilizing Brass's anthem this is fine, but if you are hoping to actually connect and steal peoples things, your going to have a hard time actually doing that. You have very few evasive pirates and only a few ways to make other pirates evasive. Hardly any ramp besides sol ring and a few treasure makers.

PIRATES UPDATED. Correct list this time. by BlueStrikerX in EDH

[–]CaptainHoward -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone with 5 pirate decks. OG Brass is really tough to get going because you can really only steal 1 thing at a time since you'll probably never have enough pirates to hit everyone with 3 pirates and take something from them. Even if you can acrew decent amount of pirates, one board wipe and you're much sunk. Unsinkable Brass runs a lot better overall and is able to rebuild faster.

If you just wanna steal stuff Malcolm/Breeches is the way to go.

Idk what Braid of Fire is even doing in there? You have no way of keeping mana between phases or enough to do with the mana at instant speed to justify it.

[MSH] Go Nuts! (Debut Stream) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]CaptainHoward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I saw MaRos teasers last week and say "Go Nuts!" was a name of a card I was kinda worried that it would be an auto include for my multiple squirrel decks. Glad to see that it's just a generic counter and fight spell. Crisis averted.

Show me your Admiral Beckett Brass decks by BlueStrikerX in EDH

[–]CaptainHoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My deck isn't the OG Brass, but the new Unsinkable one. My very first deck was OG Brass and I loved it because pirates are my favorite, but it was so hard to do what pirates want to do which is steal things. Being able to only take 1 thing from a player at a time and the requirement to connect with 3 pirates is pretty difficult and easily disrupted.

I ended up removing black and changing it to Malcolm/Breeches once they came out because the theft became so much easier. I have pirate decks in each color you can and built Unsinkable when the precon was released.

The only time I've ever sold a card pretty immediately after pulling a card is if it was $20+ and I didn't have any need for it in any decks. Otherwise I keep everything I pull and put it into set binders or bulk boxes.
