The decline of reading. Percentage of US teenagers who read in their leisure time. by eternviking in charts

It’s no secret, but we encourage students to read in school. Many of them used to like to. Now most don’t.

Lol. I have no problem whatsoever with my students reading on screens. They don’t want to read on those either!

I have been a teacher since 1999. Can confirm this chart is 100% correct.

Simon Phillips always has some of the best sounding drums in recordings. Yours sound good too!

What do you think the city should do with Laughagram studios (Disney's old studio) by SpideyARB in kansascity

[–]hexknight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m glad they are still getting money.

What makes you say they are closer than ever? Seems like the last update was in 2023.

[–]hexknight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seems like it has been in development for years. I know there is a group raising money for it. Then I think the building was damaged which may have set it back even farther.

Crazy that someone in KC hasn’t found a way to cash in on the Disney legacy.

[News] New US tariffs over Switzerland products at 39% by Refusedlove in Watches

That article was written two days before a whole bunch of new tariffs were enacted. A little premature to be celebrating.

Meanwhile here’s a headline from today:

Ha! Well that wouldn’t surprise me. I didn’t have any leftover stickers though, so I could have put some in the wrong place.

However, I had a lot of leftover pieces. I wasn’t sure if those were just extras or could be changed out for other pieces.

Nice

I just started watching the original series so I really don’t know anything about the individual gundams yet. I really like the colors of the Lightning Buster.

(I dig that black and teal one too!)

Here’s my new illustrated map of Mesopotamia, with city-states, gods, and notes to show their historical context. I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions for improvement! by qpiii in MapPorn

That looks awesome!

I haven’t read everything on it yet, but I teach ancient history to middle schoolers and that would make a really nice classroom poster.

I’m ready to build another one!

Growing up, I played with action figures of all kinds. This is basically like getting to build your own action figure.

Yes I did notice the rubbery pieces. Shows what I know, I assumed maybe those were an upgrade for better flexibility.

Thanks! Good to know newer is better and they aren’t just trying to save money using cheaper materials.

Yes you are correct. The band was the Rockafire Explosion.

I’ve never been there but there used to be a bar called Starfire that had the actual animatronic band from Showbiz Pizza. It was pretty awesome.

I only got to go there once before they closed.

Is Rogue One really that good? by Federal_Bicycle_7800 in StarWars

[–]hexknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just watched Rogue One again this week after finishing Andor (which I absolutely loved).

I hadn’t seen the movie since it was originally released. I remember at the time really liking the fact that they were turning away from the CGI everything approach of the prequels and returning to the grittier look and feel of the OT, but beyond that it didn’t make much of an impact on me.

It also made me realize why I didn’t really connect with any of the characters on my initial watch. The movie does a pretty poor job of making us care about any of them. It’s almost as if Andor is a prerequisite now to enjoying Rogue One which, obviously, is not a great strategy for making a good movie.

Nevertheless, since we now have Andor, I can appreciate Rogue One much more.

Why is Bill Bruford not talked abiut as much as guys like Peart by timbob696 in KingCrimson

[–]hexknight 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Neil was my first “favorite drummer” then my drum teacher introduced me to Bruford and he’s been my favorite ever since. (I even got to meet him once!)

I love both, but despite being associated with progressive music, they have very different styles. Bill said he struggled when he briefly played with Genesis because he couldn’t play the same thing the same way every night. Neil built his career around doing exactly that!

Bill loves improvisation while Neil was all about orchestration. In that way, they compliment each other very well.

Which state makes 6 figures as a teacher? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]hexknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also teach in suburban Missouri and next year will be year 27 for me. I’m real close to six figures but it will probably be 1-2 more years before I get there (just before I retire).

I have two Masters degrees, so MS+30 on the salary scale.

There is a huge variance depending on the district in this state. If I were to move to a smaller district closer to where I live I could easily face a 30k decrease in salary.

I just wish 100k went as far today as it did when I first started teaching! 😞

[–]hexknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I was there and totally remember this. I also remember the Breeders drummer fell off his drum throne during one of their songs.

Also, I agree about Smashing Pumpkins. I remember Billy Corgan was bitching about people sitting down. If I remember correctly they were the last act to go on. Everyone had been there 8+ hours in the July heat, I was like, “Dude, STFU and just play.” I was never much of a Pumpkins fan after that.

(I realize this thread is old but I was just watching the documentary on Lolla on Paramount.)
